Albania has entered the final stage of negotiations with the European Union.Thoughts?

Yesterday, it was announced that Albania will receive the IBAR on May 26, allowing it to begin closing negotiation chapters, becoming the second country after Montenegro to reach this stage.

ThickCaterpillar9867@reddit (OP)
Thnx🤣🤣hopefully you guys advance too
rintzscar@reddit
They won't.
ThickCaterpillar9867@reddit (OP)
They will if their government cut its ties to Russia
rintzscar@reddit
No, they won't. They won't even if they recognize Kosovo.
ThickCaterpillar9867@reddit (OP)
Till 2020 they were the most advanced country in accession talks so they definitely can and I do not think recognising Kosovo is a pre-requisite (normalising relations yes)
rintzscar@reddit
Never said that they can't do it. I said they won't.
Kosovo is definitely a prerequisite.
Even after Kosovo, multiple members will veto them.
fatgirlcuddler@reddit
The veto will be abolished soon so we don't care
rintzscar@reddit
That's complete nonsense. I suggest you stop listening to the Reddit bubble. The veto is not going anywhere.
fatgirlcuddler@reddit
Reddit bubble? More like a Goldman Sachs banker of 30 years who said we're going in soon one way or the other
rintzscar@reddit
Then stop listening to that nonsense too.
Unable-Stay-6478@reddit
What multiple members lol? Croatia only.
rintzscar@reddit
Croatia, Albania and Bulgaria are certain, Montenegro is a solid bet, even Hungary is possible.
Unable-Stay-6478@reddit
Don't make me laugh. Out of these - only Croatia and possibly Bulgaria cause it's in their nature to whine.
rintzscar@reddit
Person number infinity who doesn't understand how the world works.
Unable-Stay-6478@reddit
I mean, same can be applied to yourself, obviously
rintzscar@reddit
No, it can't. Unlike you, I'm stating the consensus, not the fantasy.
Unable-Stay-6478@reddit
You just randomly listed nearly all EU countries Serbia borders. That's fantasy.
rintzscar@reddit
I didn't list any country randomly. All the countries listed have extremely legitimate reasons to veto. And the reason for that is Serbia's continuous aggressive behaviour towards almost all of it's neighbours.
As I said, you simply don't understand the world you live in.
Unable-Stay-6478@reddit
I perfectly understand the world unlike your narrative and fairy tales.
rintzscar@reddit
Buddy, you have a Yugoslavia flair. You live in a fantasy world every single day.
Unable-Stay-6478@reddit
That's cause I'm a Yugoslav. Are you that dense?
rintzscar@reddit

FewSprinkles4359@reddit
Why would Hungary veto it?
AdvancedAd3228@reddit
Why Bulgaria?
rintzscar@reddit
Because of the Bulgarian minority in Serbia.
AdvancedAd3228@reddit
What Serbia needs to do with that minority so Bulgaria would be ok with it?
rintzscar@reddit
Depends on whomever is PM of Bulgaria at the time. If he's a hard liner - a lot. If he's soft - very little. But this is all hypothetical. Serbia is not joining in the next decade and Croatia would be first in line to veto, so this is all academic.
ThickCaterpillar9867@reddit (OP)
I remember back than that recognising Kosovo was not a pre requisite but normalising relations yes (de facto recognition but not de jure)
Multiple members can veto them ,that is true even in the case of Albania and Montenegro, shit can still happen.
Mission_Comedian5585@reddit
Were too dumb for it. We wont do it. Sloba was talking about how were a smaller Switzerland, and were still buying it.

We still are a great candidate but EU has become russophobic past 2022 (its a fact). And now they dont care about objectiveness of our negotiations. EU council just doesnt want to open the chapters (its all foreign affairs ministars of EU). EU commision has handed them recommendation to open cluster 3 in 2021 but they still didnt open it. Eu Commision is much more expert institution than Eu council which is just politics
bulbulator050@reddit
It's not phobic. We don't care russia fate.
ThickCaterpillar9867@reddit (OP)
Yeah I know it is political but if you sanction Russia same as EU suggested ,you will advance.
Aligning foreign policy is a must and especially against Russia.
Machinekalibar@reddit
I see you are a kind guy and have great intentions. But I think that wouldnt happen. They dont want russian "troyan horse". Balts and Swedes are going to veto us for eternity. They cannot be sure that govemrent wouls change. Thats why Vucic said "we dont care about your veto just give us 3 freedoms"
ThickCaterpillar9867@reddit (OP)
I’m not saying it’s going to be smooth, but sanctioning Russia would be a good starting point. And if you look at the bigger picture, the EU ‘snatching’ Serbia away from Russia would be a strategic win. Hungary is also an example of how a country can go from being pro-Russia to anti-Russia after just one election.
MrKillingChips@reddit
Also if Albania joins before Serbia. There is 0 (ZERO) chance Albania won’t veto them.
rintzscar@reddit
Albania will veto right after Croatia and before Bulgaria.
True-Blacksmith4235@reddit
What’s up with our relations with Bulgaria to make you veto.
You are never mentioned.
rintzscar@reddit
Firstly, that's not true. We are constantly attacked by Vucic's ministers. You're simply not paying attention to what they're saying. And secondly, that's not the actual reason for a potential veto. The actual reason is the Bulgarian minority in southeastern Serbia. Bulgaria would want concessions regarding them.
True-Blacksmith4235@reddit
You are, for better or worse, pretty irrelevant neighbour nowadays.
Serbia has been heavily focused on ex you sphere.
What is the problem with Bulgarian minority in Serbia? It is recognised as national minority on Serbia.
rintzscar@reddit
There is no Serbian minority in Bulgaria. There is a Bulgarian minority in Serbia, because after Bulgaria's losses in the wars of the 20th century, Serbia got a lot of territory populated with Bulgarians. Bulgaria did not get any territory populated with Serbians, because it was the losing country.
The problem is inequality. Bulgarians in Serbia don't get the same rights as Serbs.
Regarding the relevancy - as I said, you've not been paying attention. Vucic's ministers have spoken about Bulgaria quite a lot.
Green_Money_7688@reddit
This is interesting, in what way are Bulgarians discriminated in Serbia? I assume you mean that under inequality, not the same rights, but the law itself around minorities in Serbia is actually pretty okay and Bulgarians are a long existing historical minority. I'm genuinely interested, you don't hear in the media that much about Bulgaria (our ministers might be saying things about Bulgaria like you claim I don't know, but it really isn't centered in the media, before you mentioned it I never heard of it)
True-Blacksmith4235@reddit
What rights don’t they have?
Why are they voting for Vučić overwhelmingly then, if they have a problem with the way things are?
Serbs have recognised minorities even for Germans and Ukrainians, and there are only few thousand of them.
Content-Departure-77@reddit
Why would Bulgaria put veto on Serbian membership?
Macedoniansun@reddit
In an article I read approx 2012/2014. A piece written by DW Germany. Bulgaria will Veto both (North Macedonia and Serbia.) If they try to Enter the European Union. So we clearly see 1 prediction - N.Macedonia. And when Serbia tries it's unknown what reason and why. The article doesn't mention any reason but Bulgaria Veto's both nations.
rintzscar@reddit
To extract concessions regarding the Bulgarian minority in Serbia.

beardandforrest@reddit
May i ask why?
ThickCaterpillar9867@reddit (OP)
I don’t believe Albania will Veto them ,from an economic and geo-political standpoint Albania has interest in Serbia joining.
Albania may ask for minorities right and stuff (like Greece is doing with Albania) but a Veto seems unlikely ,Croatia is more likely to Veto them .
MrKillingChips@reddit
I’m not Albanian but as long as Kosovo isn’t fully independent from Serbia, they aren’t getting in. Sure Albania would want negotiations with Serbia but it’s highly unlikely for Serbia to follow through. IMO of course.
ThickCaterpillar9867@reddit (OP)
Albania and Serbia were the main countries pushing hard for the Open Balkans initiative. Kosovo opposed it, while North Macedonia joined mainly because they completely lost and did not know what else to do politically. Even back then, it was clear that the geopolitical situation in the region was far more nuanced than it appeared, so I believe that, for now, Albania will not veto Serbia.
phariom@reddit
Serbia won't get it in even if it literally declares war on and invades Russia. There is a higher chance of Serbia becoming a space-faring nation than joining the EU in our lifetime.

Markomannia@reddit

ThickCaterpillar9867@reddit (OP)
Source for what?
Markomannia@reddit
Source that you'll be allowed to work in Austria without restriction as soon as you'd enter the EU.
Cause it was not a case with Croatia, Romania and Bulgaria.
ThickCaterpillar9867@reddit (OP)
I did not know about that and ofc I cannot give you a source cuz we have not even joined yet🤣🤣a lot of shit can happen ,but I always assumed that once you join you are allowed to instantly move and work wherever you want in the EU apparently it was not the case for those you mentioned so maybe we wont be able to work in Austria and Germany at the beginning.
I have always been a EU citizen and Idk very well the technicalities others went through ,I started to have more interest on the subject 2 years ago when Albania advanced so fast
__zero0_one1__@reddit
It's called 2+3+2 formula and it has to do only with the labor market. So, you can move freely immediately, but new member states can be in a situation where you would need a permit if you wanted to work in an older EU member state. First it is a 2 year waiting period (specific countries may opt out of this as well and offer immediate permit free access), but if there are concerns for the labour market, then countries can extend this period by 3 years and if they are still extremely concerned them by 2 additional years. Maximum in all cases is 7 years after entry. But Albania is not that big that it shpuld ve a concern. Croatian citizens could freely work in Germany after two years for instance. But the same took 7 years for Romanians.
Markomannia@reddit
Well, you might wish to reconsider spreading assumptions as facts before someone gets false hope. 🤷🏻♂️

spagoot-has-infected@reddit
You're confusing it with the Schengen
pitogyros@reddit
I made a comment above regarding it , those countries could freely live and work there.
The only thing they couldn’t do was to avoid border checks and passport controls on their borders with EU Schengen members.
EU membership perks and Schengen membership perks are unrelated
kajokarafili@reddit
Yeah you can have a waiting period imposed by members states when you join EU,regarding free movement of labour. Some may put restrictions, some not.Maximum is 7 years, after that the country that has put restrictions on free movement of labour has to remove them.
I think majority of Albanians who wanted to emigrate, have already done so.It will be some that still will emigrate but not that much to be a big problem for the big countries.
pitogyros@reddit
He probably refers to Schengen zone.
I think some people usually confuse the EU freedom of movement rules from Schengen.
Schengen is only about border checks and passport controls , Albanians would be free to live , work , study in any EU country like any other member without even being in Schengen.
ThickCaterpillar9867@reddit (OP)
He is right ,I checked it ,all new members were not allowed to work in Austria and Germany at the beginning.
pitogyros@reddit
That’s odd , I wasn’t aware of that , why so ?
ThickCaterpillar9867@reddit (OP)
I was not aware too cuz I always had an EU passport, idk why maybe to adapt the market and I also dont know if it will be the same case for Albania and Montenegro due to their small population.
pitogyros@reddit
Hm if I what i found is correct ( I did a very lazy search )
It seems they feared massive migrations to richer countries right of the bat , due to salary differences.
And it seems that not all countries had these limitations, for example Sweden opened up and removed the restrictions immediately while Austria and Germany kept them much longer.
So it doesn’t seem to be a fixed rule but a decision for the country to make.
My best guess would be due to Albanian and Montenegro tiny populations that shouldn’t be issue at all and with lack of workforce in certain countries they would
A) open up and not place any restriction immediately
Or
B) put minimal restrictions and limit the entry of Albanian / Montenegrin workforce in their country for 1-2\~ years tops
B

The EU is very cautious about who is entering the Union today, one may say it's over-expanded. New members are not in its priorities at this moment. Look at how Hungary damaged the EU with its puppet government vetoing many anti-Russian resolutions.
I hope the best for Albania, but the EU is not what it was 15 years ago. Don't expect much.

freddo_expresso@reddit

PinguShark@reddit
Greece has had more to offer for the eu than Albania too, it’s one of the most visited countries for holidays. I cant tell you i’ve ever heard anyone tell me about a particular strong industry in Albania. Tourism is on the rise sure but only very recently, it’s in its infancy and they have a lot to learn. I think it’s still too early for Albania to join.
umalut123@reddit
It’s not a competition Pingu, relax
umalut123@reddit
Let me clarify before someone builds an entire argument on a technicality…I was talking about the Eurozone. The point is that even as a member, Greece was not exactly treated as economically on par with the core Eurozone countries. And 2009 made that very obvious, when Germany and others had to step in during the debt crisis.. So it’s a little rich to lecture Albania about “standards” when Greece itself struggled to meet the standards of the club it was already inside. 😏
ThickCaterpillar9867@reddit (OP)
Since the war in Ukraine, enlargement has become a priority.
Of course, they can still say no, but that seems unlikely because the whole process goes through many ‘mini-approvals,’ and there would be little reason to bring it this far only to reject it in the end.
Albania and Montenegro have already passed the biggest hurdles, while the same cannot be said for the other candidates, which are still largely stuck
freddo_expresso@reddit
What makes you think enlargement has become a priority, due to Ukraine? The Belarus and Ukraine are not entering the EU any time soon, so it's only Moldova left. Why would the EU let a country that can elect a pro-Russian government at any moment join? What's the bonus here?
ThickCaterpillar9867@reddit (OP)
You have not paid attention but they have been screaming “ENLARGEMENT” since the war started.
Belarus is not even a candidate dude wtf🤣
It is not only Moldova left, what about Serbia?Bosnia?Kosovo?N.Macedonia??
freddo_expresso@reddit
Have you seen any enlargement actually taking place? No. They just give hopes that you "may join", so they keep you out of the Russian sphere of influence.
The Western Balkans have nothing to do with the war in Ukraine, they don't border Russia.
ThickCaterpillar9867@reddit (OP)
It was false promise but now not anymore ,I have not seen an enlargement but I have see the real demonstrated by facts(Montenegro is drafting the accession treaty).
Border means shit cuz Serbia does not border Russia and is in the western Balkans.
You should take some lessons on geo-politics dude
freddo_expresso@reddit
How will Albania benefit the EU by joining.
ThickCaterpillar9867@reddit (OP)
You serious?
More EU funding
Citizens will be allowed to freely move and work anywhere they want
Access to single market
Stronger geopolitical security
freddo_expresso@reddit
So you will rapidly lose citizens, depopulation. This freedom of movement and immigration benefits countries like Germany, not you.
RegionSignificant977@reddit
It will benefit not only Albania, but also you. And us. I believe Albanians that want to emigrate already are out of Albania.
3esin@reddit
The people who left usually return after some time and send money back home.
And you didn't say anything about the other positive things.
freddo_expresso@reddit
I live in Greece, we have the second largest Albanian immigration population in the world after Italy.

USA i guess would be concerning for some in the EU.

He is just a salty nationalist
rintzscar@reddit
This is quite literally the opposite of the truth. It's like saying "the Sun isn't hot". Expansion is currently one of the main priorities.
freddo_expresso@reddit
In what universe 🥀
rintzscar@reddit
The one you're sleepwalking through.
ThickCaterpillar9867@reddit (OP)
Dude you are definitely living under a rock🤣🤣
Substratas@reddit
It wouldn’t be much for a big country, but it will be magic for a small country like Albania.✨

freddo_expresso@reddit
The EU can corrupt a country even more, politicians can take more money. Also, it will be much easier for your citizens to immigrate, leading to further depopulation.
It's not all positive.
Substratas@reddit
I hope they’ll be monitored more closely about how the money is spent.
It’s okay. They will learn on their own. Look at Romania 5 years after it joined vs. now. It’s gonna be just fine.
freddo_expresso@reddit
Greece and Italy were richer 20 years ago. That's all I'm gonna say. Corruption is a problem in Albania as well, from what I know.
greekscientist@reddit
I agree. Now that Albania in a few years will be EU the bourgeoisie will have even more access to funds for embezzling.
The only good thing is the possibility of no border controls in Albania-Greece border. But Schengen was made for mobility of capital, not to help travel.
ThickCaterpillar9867@reddit (OP)
The border thing will take time,I mean Bulgaria joined Schengen \~ 15 years after joining EU.
Funds even in this phase are a lot but we obviously will get more once we join.
nistemevideli2puta@reddit
And that has nothing to do with leadership in Italy and Greece for the past 20 years? Nothing to do with politicians that Italians and Greeks voted for?
freddo_expresso@reddit
So you trust Albanian politicians all of a sudden? Ok, if that's what you think.
nistemevideli2puta@reddit
No, learn to read.
Substratas@reddit
I’m glad you care so much about Albania’s well-being! 🥹✨🫶
Frosty-Surround-3199@reddit
You are right about the corruption part, Greece is a good example for that.
freddo_expresso@reddit
Greece and Italy were richer 20 years ago. That tells you something. Albania is equally, to say the least, corrupt.
ThickCaterpillar9867@reddit (OP)
Albania is way more corrupt and that is a fact but Greece and Italy has been in the eu since 45years plus,Greece joined in the 80s and had a crazy economic boost till the 2000s ,joining EU had nothing to do with it.
Self-Bitter@reddit
Small countries get an easier pass that's certain. Good luck, consistency rewards.
Substratas@reddit
Thank you 🫶

Genuinely happy for you 🫶

Wait someone who’s informed enough let me know what this means cause we’ve been in these negotiations for as long as I’ve been alive 😆
ThickCaterpillar9867@reddit (OP)
It means we can start now to close chapters ,finish negotiations at the end 2027 or beginning 2028 and wait 1.5 to 2 years to get ratified ,so if everything goes smoothly 2029-2030 we gonna be full EU member.
kajokarafili@reddit
*Ahem*...Full member...yeah sure....
Our f*** prime minister was asking to be a 2nd class member...
bebilov@reddit
I don’t think you become a full member right away, there are stages and gradually you get more benefits like waving visas and stuff like that I think. Again not an expert but from what I’ve caught here and there from members like Bulgaria or Croatia
ThickCaterpillar9867@reddit (OP)
That could happen before but I meant full member.

Amazing, we know who is winning Eurovision in 2027.

Love how the economic criteria for induction have just been ignored completely lately
ThickCaterpillar9867@reddit (OP)
Not really ,do you know the financial situation in Bulgaria and Romania when they joined?gdp per capita and income ratio to the European average was worst than Albania has it now.
BamBumKiofte23@reddit
Good. The more Balkan neighbors join the better.
