A linux machine based on the Raspberry Pi CM5

Having spent way too long trying to figure out if I could make a future-proof ish linux machine, I settled on a CM5 based solution, gave it a SGI Indy looking case and popped it on github
The instructions and files are at github.com/veebch/dbi-pi

Probably outperform the original hardware even if you emulated it.

I recognized that SGI indy look right away 😄

Fat PS2 vibes too.

The bootup sound unlocked loads of repressed memories

Future-proofing does not exist.

but 15 years mean time between failures is future proof ish

hence the 'ish'

Ah, so it's mostly a custom case project. Still pretty cool.

*kind of*
The main motivation for it was making something out of the Compute Module rather than the Pi. The integration of a mechanical keyboard to the 500+ seemed like a waste (and the 15 year MTBF of the CM5 was a bonus)

Yeah, you made a case for the Pi carrier board. It looks really cool though.
Out of curiosity, who did the YouTube video?

Honestly this is the kind of project that makes Linux hardware communities fun again.
A CM5-based desktop with an SGI Indy-inspired case feels like the perfect mix of retro workstation aesthetics and modern maker practicality.

Step aside SGI Indigo, we've got the DbI Teal (which was a color option for the Indigo)

This is really awesome and makes me think that you should do a whole series of these.
Find out how legal it would be for you to sell premade systems, too, if you're interested.

I feel an urge to align the two bits for some reason, like the top part will slide and fall.

Despite it predating the release of Fruit Samurai by a couple of decades, I find hard not to think is is mid-slide following a sword slash

Indy-spired 😉
