I remember old-timey documentaries of “flying cars” like this and how these would be the future. Obviously, they never took off. Today, I look at this and see a solution to costly hangar space. Definitely not the future, but not the worst idea I’ve seen

Yeah. The best version of this I've seen is a barely-compromised plane that had slightly heavy landing gear, foldable wings, and a unit that was basically the back end of a motor cycle that could either be stored in the cargo area or left at the airfield. It was a plane first and foremost. The roadable angle was just to either let it drive to the nearest town from a remote airfield on one of those western camping trips or drive home from the primary airfield to avoid hangaring.
