I don't think that's the case. From the very beginning his entire personality is being the strongest so he gets to do whatever he wants. He can't fight, he's not smart, he's not strategic, so once he loses his powers yeah a crying bitch is all he is. He's always been that.
Yes. Especially because the whole series long all people not afraid of him tell him he's a complete failure. What's the point in killing him off the minute he is powerless? What was tge whole buildup for? And the show fails like this in all kinds of areas. For example: whats the point of soldier boy, the v1 and bombsight? Its all filler and useless in the end.
Doubt you care about spoilers, but William Butcher is on the path for revenge after Homelander (basically evil Superman but is actually an insecure manchild with a crippling need for approval and breastmilk) raped his wife.
The show starts off well but falls straight off a cliff. Butcher himself decides to commit Supe genocide after his dog died of old age, and gets killed. This after him deciding two episodes earlier that his stance on Supes doesn't need to be as harsh as genocide.
Oh yeah, just realized they didn’t shoe horn storm front back into the show in that last episode. Maybe she really is gone. That’s what Clara would have wanted.
Soldier boy and Bombsight are there strictly there for the prequel they are working on. The V1 subplot is partially about that as well you already have evil Superman for the villian, the only way to make him more of a threat is to make him immortal. I would have liked seeing the V1 amp up his powers a bit more, like he is noticeably faster and hitting harder, or his eye blasts are larger beams doing more damage. Like that could have definitely been done better.
As for killing Homelander immediately after he lost his powers, when Kimiko was hit with Soldier boys blast all it took was being re-injected with regular V to give her her powers back. And it was shown Homelander had an entire cache of regular V in his room in seven tower, so he would have tried to get back to it. Then your back to square one. As for not taking longer to kill him, I just don't think Butcher thought it was worth it, all he wanted was for Homelander to be dead. I would have liked to have seen him smack him around with the crowbar a couple of times first though. Also with how drasticly the Black Noir plot had been changed from the comics, this was as close as I think they could get to the comic ending.
I personally think the most atrocious part of the season was how poorly genV was incorporated. Either have the characters in the season with something to actually do or don't have them at all. At the very least they didn't pull a Arya Stark with Marie Moreau.
It’s what he thinks powerful people want. Dude has literally never feared death until the moment before he died, I thought it was pretty reflective of who they built him up to be
The thing is I liked the scene but I don't think it actually works. Homelander was burned and boiled alive and humiliated since he was a child. He might not know how to fight and I guess you could have him be shaken at the loss of his powers, but I don't think he'd react like that. If anything he'd rather die a horrible death then debase himself like that.
It's really just going back to this whole thing where bullies are weak and cowardly when you hurt them back, and it's like... no?
Nah that's the point. He's always been able to tank everything before. Almost anyone that had ever wronged him ended up dead or worse. He truly never had to deal with a singular consequence in his life. He built his persona around the fact that he was the most powerful person alive. But the moment he lost his powers he lost his mask too.
But that's simply not true. He was hurt against Maeve. He was hurt again sb+hughie+butcher. Both fights he was in danger of losing his powers. He's been irradiated. He's been poisoned and knocked out and in danger.
So he's faced both consequences and pain. It just doesn't work.
First off: I'm agreeing with what you're saying. At first glance it doesn't make sense. But Homelander was definitely losing it in S05, with actual delusions and the two people in the world he remotely gives a shit about, his father and his son, telling him what a loser he was (fuck, his son beating his ass and taking him down). I think he was broken inside, more than ever, his mental was gone and that's why he acted the way he did
Yeah, but there were better ways to whimp that another dick joke, Homelander knows Butcher he knows better things he could say to him to avoid being killed.
rewatch the first 2 seasons. the show used to be genuinely good TV mixed with some shock value and raunchy humor. the constant sex jokes are just a symptom of the fact the show became a hyper flanderized, borderline parody of itself
I'd have prefered the same scene after some build up like some destruction here and there, some bodies flying around. They literally built up this moment for 5 seasons. It would have hit better thematically. As it is, the final moment feels like a wet fart.
I’d have preferred the patheticness to come out through him trying to fight back anyway - actually land a few hits on Butcher, still furious and delusional in his belief that he’s superior. You could then have Butcher just start eating the punches, which finally scares Homelander, and he starts fighting like a cornered animal, but it’s ineffective. Then you can have Butcher beat him to death while Homelander tries to do and say anything, but it’s impossible for him to stop it.
Yeah it’s that. Not because it’s overly vulgar and feels like it’s written by a 14 year old or something, it’s because everyone is a dumb chud except you

Buddy that’s been the case since season 4 probably even earlier
You’re acting like the series was good up until this last episode
If you know anything about the politics and controversy that constantly surrounds this series, this was exactly what I expected to happen to homelander in the end
"4chan getting mad at one of the few genuine good scenes in the episode"
No, YOU are the one acting as if the series was good and had merits beyond season 4.
If you knew anything about the source material from the comic and Kripke's changes surrounding the series this is exactly the badly written ending to Homelander expected to happen. Only idiots had expectations it would be good.
Honestly, I expected a scene like this as soon as it was revealed that… yeah, not gonna talk about Kimiko. It seemed totally on character for the whimpering insecure man Homelander was, especially after losing the one thing he had built his entire character and life on. It just seemed like a satisfying ending.
And yet… I felt unsatisfied. I dunno, maybe because the setup was done poorly or perhaps because he didn‘t break as much as he should have? It felt more like he was slightly embarrassed and only afraid of dying, and not in total shock and disbelief because the one thing he never thought would happen happened to him. He was one of the few superheroes who were born with V in their blood, he hadn‘t lived a single day without being one of the strongest. And now he was a mere mortal and outclassed by Butcher.
But as soon as he loses his powers, he embarrassingly jumps twice, only to begin pleading for his life, offering to pay with his body, basically imitating all the people he had killed, which he knew would fail. I wanted him to break completely, to flail around, to be completely in shock and terror at his new weak from. He wasn‘t a king dethroned, but a side character made for gags.
But as soon as he loses his powers, he embarrassingly jumps twice, only to begin pleading for his life, offering to pay with his body, basically imitating all the people he had killed, which he knew would fail.
He tried to Lazer him, tried to fly away, and then threw a desperate punch, proceeded to then got battered in the face by a vengeful alcoholic twice his (newly deposited) strength. Feeling true pain and helplessness for the first time. He literally only had fear from his powers for outside support, and he knew it was gone.
To your first part though, I think it should have been 2 episodes, or atleast 90 minutes. The white house infiltration should have taken twice as long. Kimiko's power should have been tried and tested a bit more, rather than being confirmed and sent off in a few minutes.
Maybe some training and self doubt that it's not gonna work. That she doesn't have the rage in her that Soldier Boy does, and Sage, now dumb and throwing out ideas, leaves with a mention of love being the thing she couldn't account for so maybe that's it. Have the Frenchie scene then, not during the fight.
Then have the white house infiltration, draw it out beyond a single trap. More of a fight. Involve more supes, some of the Gen V people could actually get involved at the start and then split off. Have the end Homelander fight be longer and stronger, a la Season 3. Maybe show more people's reactions to such a fight on the live streams. Then you get some more breathing space for the post-fight celebrations, for the Butcher run off, and everyone's endings.
I think we spent more time listening to how MM got his nickname than the team celebrating the culmination of the entirety of the show
Honestly it should have being way longer. Shit, maybe do a parade wirh him powerless getting beat by some random teens.
Everyone else would hate it but i would have move that they keep him alive and gets send to prision so we can see him get "bully"
When Butcher grabbed the crowbar I expected him to crush his limbs for a while with it and draw out his death. Would've made for some nice final acting for Starr. Was kinda peeved he just killed him.
Honestly butcher shouldn't have being the one that kills him. If they dident had the time they could have butcher enjoying himself hitting him and then having huggy (dont know how to write) or kimino or starlight just stealing the kill showing that they dont enjoy making someone suffer even if he is evil and at the same time showing how butcher enjoys it.
Idk about that. It was Butcher's earned kill from the beginning and HL's the last guy who should be soapboxed for his suffering. I do think Starlight really should've been there for the fight though given her whole history.
Sit down anon, the reason we called you in here is because we suspect you of being into... certain fetishes. Is there anything you'd like to confess right now?
I mean, in terms of shock it's definitely over the top, very much how real superheroes would be, but if that doesn't interest you then you wouldn't be interested.
Old guns weren't very accurate and took forever to reload so you wanted to wait until you had a decent chance of hitting something before wasting ammo.
Wyatt Earp famously said the best thing you could do in a gunfight was take your time. Basically counted on the other dude being panicky and missing his first shot.
And old timey battles turned into games of chicken because once one side fired the other side now had time to get closer and shoot a far deadlier volley, so officers had to decide when they were close enough that shooting first was worth it.
What helped me understand this kind of combat was that it's basically a bayonet charge but you get a chance to shoot a couple of times on the way, hoping maybe you'll hit something
Afaik based on revrws and reactions it was rushed to shit and a lot of it was crummy buildup for a spinoff prequel series.I don't really get whats wrong with Homelander's fate other than his coup being even more (well that's arguable, he ans the supes killed multiple national guard and massacered basically the entire white house) of a nothingburger compared to the comics. I guess they assumed he'd nuke a part of the U.S first before getting his ass kicked by Butcher.
He could have gone out talking about BB’s wife if that was what he wanted. Breaking down like that coincidentally still on camera was lame af writing. They wanted to wrap up the storyline and chose a cheesy way to go about it. You could tell they told the actor to raise his voice like 90 octaves after he lost powers
i mean idk he did talk about bringing becca back as a shifter when he literally killed the other shifter pretending to be his dead mommy gf. like he'd know that wouldn't cut it
The scene of him saying all that pathetic shit to the cameras and people walking out of churches was just cringe. Everyone would be stuck in their seats and talking to each other. The White House and infrastructure had billions in damages from Homelander. And they’re all walking out of church, for their Sunday brunch, because they “heard enough”?
It was all just poorly designed.
Writers have been a let down for awhile. Queen maave never should have survived a 40 floor fall without powers. It made no sense soldier boy suddenly remembered he loved storm front.
The manga and premise of superheroes being assholes definitely had more juice and interest than what they delivered.
They should have all gotten some small power buff like in the comics awhile ago tbh.
This is why I liked the comic more. It wasn’t stellar, but its plot was much more entertaining. Cute that they had some hat tipping to the comic’s deaths.
So many comments here are saying its out of character for homelander to beg for his life despite knowing that butcher wont go for it.
Bullshit
Point 1:
The 2nd most defining trait he has had for 2 seasons is to become immortal (either with an heir or V1), and aside from validation (which by his final few minutes becomes pointless to him) he is driven by that mortality.
He will do anything to live as long as he can, even when he loses his immortal he wants to survive.
Point 2:
Does he actually know butcher? Like sure they've talked a few times but for the most part its a 1-sided relationship. Butcher HATES homelander, while homelander is entertained by butcher. He is fully aware that Bucher means business after taughting vought with the body of translucent, and that butcher would let the world burn as long as he can kill him.
But homelander cant actually understand people. Yes he knows that Butcher wants him dead, but from his perspective everyone can be threatened or bargend with because when you're the strongest on the planet few try to say no. Even after losing his powers homelanders not going to completely change that mindset.
We literally see his realisation with how he initially tries dealing with butcher in diffrent ways after losing his powers, to kill him (eyes dont work) to run (flight is broken) couldn't threaten butcher (as seen with his weak ass punch) resorted to bargaining (giving him vought) and then begging (sucking his dick).
Out of everything to complain about in this final people are latching onto the best character writing this show has had since season 1.
termperedtantrum@reddit
Did people really not get that Homelander was a whimpering loser and coward the whole time?
JGrayzz@reddit
Because he was written that way to own the chuds or whatever. It's fucking petty and stupid and anyone defending it is a moron.

What makes a good soldier is the ability to shoot three rounds a minute in any weather.
zealot416@reddit
And old timey battles turned into games of chicken because once one side fired the other side now had time to get closer and shoot a far deadlier volley, so officers had to decide when they were close enough that shooting first was worth it.
Citiz3n_Kan3r@reddit
The english also fired 4 or 5 vollies a minute to everyone elses 3. Meant our infanty was formidible
tato64@reddit
What helped me understand this kind of combat was that it's basically a bayonet charge but you get a chance to shoot a couple of times on the way, hoping maybe you'll hit something

I didnt know it was a reference to a show I never watched and it's even more funny that way. I just assumed autism at it's best.

Peak writing.
ViscountBuggus@reddit
Haven't watched the 5th season yet but based on these reactions I think it might not be very good
Sethleoric@reddit (OP)
Afaik based on revrws and reactions it was rushed to shit and a lot of it was crummy buildup for a spinoff prequel series.I don't really get whats wrong with Homelander's fate other than his coup being even more (well that's arguable, he ans the supes killed multiple national guard and massacered basically the entire white house) of a nothingburger compared to the comics. I guess they assumed he'd nuke a part of the U.S first before getting his ass kicked by Butcher.
guiamaral0@reddit
I love how Incels loved homelander and the writers of the show just shitted on their weird character
Fern-ando@reddit
The sucking dick thing was way out of character, he knows Butcher will only hit him harder after that.
Thin_General_8594@reddit
I'm giving the writers credit they don't deserve here but maybe he wanted to die rather than live powerless and goaded BB into killing him
BasketbaIIa@reddit
He could have gone out talking about BB’s wife if that was what he wanted. Breaking down like that coincidentally still on camera was lame af writing. They wanted to wrap up the storyline and chose a cheesy way to go about it. You could tell they told the actor to raise his voice like 90 octaves after he lost powers
Fearless-Cut-933@reddit
i mean idk he did talk about bringing becca back as a shifter when he literally killed the other shifter pretending to be his dead mommy gf. like he'd know that wouldn't cut it
BasketbaIIa@reddit

Each slide made it better. I love the internet but that’s enough today.

Jupiter-Tank@reddit
This is why I liked the comic more. It wasn’t stellar, but its plot was much more entertaining. Cute that they had some hat tipping to the comic’s deaths.

am i correct in assuming this is a reference to The Boys' series finale?
a_generic_redditer@reddit
So many comments here are saying its out of character for homelander to beg for his life despite knowing that butcher wont go for it.
Bullshit
Point 1: The 2nd most defining trait he has had for 2 seasons is to become immortal (either with an heir or V1), and aside from validation (which by his final few minutes becomes pointless to him) he is driven by that mortality.
He will do anything to live as long as he can, even when he loses his immortal he wants to survive.
Point 2: Does he actually know butcher?
ECX2BLACK@reddit
Could omlanda not have just stuck another dose of v up his ass to get his powers back?
Sir_CrazyLegs@reddit
The dumbledore one is always funny

It's pretty in character for Butcher to just kill him off. He was never about satisfaction or whatever, he just wanted the fucker dead.
