How much work would this be to maintain/find parts for?

1985 Mercedes 300SD for sale for $4900. Car looks really solid and runs. Not sure the aftermarket area for these models.

I have two 85 diesels Mercedes a 300D and a 300TD so they are w123 not w126 but same driveline and so far everything I've needed maintenance and general repair has been easy to find on sites like fcpeuro or pelican parts. I got a factory rear glass for my 300D old stock for the glass I just pulled for it from a parts car. They also are no where as complicated as newer stuff or a temperamental as the gas versions. These old diesel where produced in great numbers across a lot of countries and have quite a following still so you can find how to stuff readily and I have found several somewhat local people who part them out.

You can find things like springs, shocks, driveshafts, interior trim, some exterior trim, wheels and tires, some electronic parts, lifters, fuel injectors (at least on the gas models), exhaust, radiators, and alternators.
If something major goes wrong I.E. a window or windshield gets smashed, the engine grenades, or you something goes wrong with the differential - you will not easily find parts to fix that.
The 126 platform is very cool, I have one myself. The diesels will run forever.

Not trying to be a dick, but I was always told if you can’t afford to buy two European imports, you can’t afford to maintain one.

Nothing more expensive than a “cheap” European car.

Diesels are pretty reliable and relatively easily maintained, if it's gas run unless you have deep pockets.

80s diesel Benz’s are generally pretty easy to get parts for. My experience is primarily with W123s and W124s but I assume the W126 is the same way.
