Mazda CX-50 Hybrid vs RAV4 Hybrid?

Surprisingly couldn’t find this question in the subreddit history.
Ok same powertrain, more stylish interior on the Mazda, better fuel economy on the RAV4, slightly better price on the Mazda…
Which one is actually the better deal?
Only thing I can think is that the Mazda won’t hold its value as well. But then again, perhaps you’re just paying for that value up front with Toyota’s pricing. So idk

this really comes down to Personal preference and whether the Toyota dealer or Mazda dealer gives you a better deal. Both are excellent vehicles in their class.

Make sure you spend time with the Mazda's knob-centric infotainment system to make sure you don't strongly dislike it. The touch screen works in CarPlay and Android Auto, but it's going to be a reach for some.
revocer@reddit
The better deal is the Mazda Hybrid.
Upstairs_Copy_9590@reddit (OP)
What makes you say?
revocer@reddit
RAV4 Hybrid usually has significant dealer markup.
Upstairs_Copy_9590@reddit (OP)
Oh yeah, true.
Duukt@reddit
I thought the CX-50 uses the exact same hybrid drivetrain as the RAV4 since it is licensed from Toyota. So that'll last exactly the same.
You'll need to research if other components like door actuators and accessories last as long since Toyota parts seem to outlast other manufacturers. If they do, the Mazda is clearly the better pick since it has a better interior and you can negotiate a better price with Mazda dealers.

Not quite. The CX-50 uses the old 4th generation hybrid system, whereas the current Rav4 uses the 5th generation hybrid system. Though I have heard the 4th generation system is very good, so I'm not sure it's worth putting stock into that.

Hoping this post counts as beginning that research lol.
If anyone knows the answers on other components longevity between the two vehicles, or how to find out such info, that would be a great help.

Never been in a Mazda that was an Uber or rental. There's a reason why the Rav4 overtook the F150 in overall sales last year. Higher reliability, resale, and cheaper parts on the Rav4. You want a Rav4 PHEV.

Actually on CarGurus when I was looking at the CX50 originally, the main seller was Hertz Car Sales - tons of previous fleet cars.
I want no business with plug-in hybrids.

I was in the same boat about a month ago. I was debating between the Mazda CX50, Toyota Rav4 Hybrid and the CRV Hybrid. Ultimately went for the CRV just because it made the most sense for me financially (better terms, lowest OTD overall) but it was really close. The Mazda drives better and looks better than the Toyota. The biggest issue that I have with Toyota is their insane mark ups and almost none of the dealers here in the bay area are willing to negotiate. Plus you have to deal with the worst salesman ever.
Other than that, I think you can’t go wrong with the Mazda.

2024 rav4 was SO uncomfortable. At first I was on straight denial. It’s fine, I’ll adjust the seat some more. Nope, nope. After 11 months I traded it in.
Upstairs_Copy_9590@reddit (OP)
Oh interesting! What’s your height/build if you don’t mind me asking?
Ok_Leader_4600@reddit
I’m 5.9 220 stocky shoulders. It’s the knee room and the terrible headrest the most. Honestly sitting in it wasn’t bad, BUT riding in it was totally different.
DamarMurry@reddit
Exact same experience with a 2015 Rav4. I dont get the hype that I hear from my friends.
twosuperior@reddit
You will likely be way happier day to day with the Mazda if you care at all what they feel like to drive.
Upstairs_Copy_9590@reddit (OP)
Do you think the Mazda will last as long as the RAV4/have as few issues?
Critical-Magician421@reddit
If you are buying this year, I think the Mazda is the easy choice.
Upstairs_Copy_9590@reddit (OP)
More likely I’ll buy next year, but good to know info regardless. Besides, if I buy used next year, it’s important to know what the consensus was now.
twosuperior@reddit
Mazda is right up there with Toyota for reliability and as someone who works at a Toyota dealer they are no longer the pinnacle they once were.
Busy-Organization942@reddit
If you enjoy a sporty ride, then go for the Mazda, if that's not important to you, the the Rav4.
Upstairs_Copy_9590@reddit (OP)
Ok this may be a silly ask… but i don’t really know what a “sporty” ride means. Like you’re fighting the car more?
Everything_Breaks@reddit
In this context, sporty means a more exciting driving experience. "This car feels sporty, the way it handles those curves and how quickly it accelerates"

Thanks!

Love my '21 Hybrid XLE AWD. Perfectly comfortable for me but I haven't driven the Mazda. It's such a personal choice you really need to drive both. Not just test drive. Rent for a weekend from Turo and run it through your paces.
Upstairs_Copy_9590@reddit (OP)
Thanks for the tip on Turo! I tried calling my usual rental and they couldn’t guarantee a specific model, so I wasn’t really sure how people were getting specific car rentals.
Sbeast86@reddit
The Mazda is a much nicer riding vehicle IMO
Upstairs_Copy_9590@reddit (OP)
Do you think the Mazda will last as long as the RAV4/have as few issues?
Throwaway_2474128_1@reddit
depends. do you do maintenance at the intervals in the manual? then congrats, practically any car you buy will last 200k+ miles
Upstairs_Copy_9590@reddit (OP)
I do, or I certainly try to. But no, I’m always perfect and my car isn’t my hobby.
If I know it’s due, or get a signal of any kind that maintenance/repair is needed, I’ll do it. But I’m not proactively looking around the corner for it, if I’m being truthful with you.
