My son is taking a History of the 90s class in college this fall

This will be the first time I’ll be able to help one of my kids with their homework since they were in the fifth grade.
Zandor72@reddit
Chapter 1: World Wide Web
Chapter 2: Columbine
Chapter 3: OJ Simpson - Guilty
Bonus content: What is Grunge?
shawncollins512@reddit
Monica Lewinsky doesn’t get a chapter?
cowbutt6@reddit
... And what did it do to heavy metal?
gnortsmracr@reddit
Add Waco/Koresh , OKC/McVeigh to chapter 2.
the_lazy_viking@reddit
Oh, USian 90s history.
Existing-Hawk5204@reddit
OJ was found not guilty
19BabyDoll75@reddit
…believe it?
Existing-Hawk5204@reddit
It’s possible
BBorNot@reddit
One of the jurors said the innocent verdict was payback for Rodney King. So many levels of messed up.
the-dutch-fist@reddit (OP)
So did the cops that beat Rodney King
Practical-Vanilla-41@reddit
Not in the civil trial.
Alternative-Law4626@reddit
That’s liability, not - guilty or not guilty (which is not innocence).
Existing-Hawk5204@reddit
🙄
shawncollins512@reddit
My kids like to taunt me about being born in the 1900s.
in-a-microbus@reddit
Anytime my co-workers give me shit about it I hit back with "I have pregnancy scares older than you"
HotAcanthisitta621@reddit
we are history folks
Spiritual_Sail_8969@reddit
paulrich_nb@reddit
Yes that will help him in this job market. Lol
Standard-Cockroach64@reddit
Luckily we're building a 90's factory just down the block :)
afternever@reddit
Your father and I are for the jobs the 90's will provide
Dense-Consequence-70@reddit
Here I am thinking college was about education, broadening your knowledge base, and critical thinking.
Dogrel@reddit
To be fair, the freshmen entering colleges this fall were born in 2008. The 1990s ARE the province of history books by now. And learning about them is the equivalent of learning about the 1960s in the 1990s.
azlmichael@reddit
College is proving you will show up and complete work given.

There you go being woke. (/S)
TicklePitts@reddit
Ouch. Owie.
thisoldguy74@reddit
Which is the same as studying the 60's was in the 90's. Doesn't really seem that far off when you put it in perspective.
BizzyQueenBee@reddit
Ouch!
Greasystools@reddit
Did something happen in the ‘90s I was not listening at that time
toiletcleaner999@reddit
Omg ladies and gentlemen, we are officially a history class !!! Lol
Cysteine_Chapel64@reddit
That's really good. History when I was growing up even into college basically stopped at the Vietnam War in courses.
Late_Organization_56@reddit
Sounds about right. And since my AP American history teacher was an angry hippy (his own words) the unit of Vietnam was a little more personal than professionally detached.
jlomba1@reddit
Portlandia!
UncleFlip@reddit
💀
Standard-Cockroach64@reddit
I still have shirts and shoes from the early 90's.....
Disc04Life@reddit
There better be a section for music appreciation
YVRkeeper@reddit
I suggest “60 songs that explain the 90’s” podcast.
the-dutch-fist@reddit (OP)
If co-sign on 60 Songs. Absolutely love that podcast
SmokedLimburger@reddit
I was thinking about disliking you for posting this but have decided to hate your son’s college instead. What the name of this institution that will forever be the object of my disdain?
the-dutch-fist@reddit (OP)
It’s a state school in the Midwest
Outlaw_Josie_Snails@reddit
Ah, the Nineteen Hundreds of olde.
HereButNotHere1988@reddit
I bet they just sit in class, and watch old episodes of the tv show, I ♥️the 90's, and turn in a report after each one.
PromiseCute7367@reddit
Wait. What? How?
the-dutch-fist@reddit (OP)
He says it’s going to be half political/economic stuff and half cultural. I’m honestly fascinated to see how an academic approaches this.
notevenapro@reddit
Runy ridge, Waco, and how the Oklahoma city bombing changed Americas landscape with bollards.
Total-Sheepherder-63@reddit
It's like when I was in college in the 90s and studied the civil rights movement. Same timeframe. I'm sorry!
the-dutch-fist@reddit (OP)
You’re right but it’s still shocking to actually see it
Total-Sheepherder-63@reddit
Absolutely!
AveryRedlance@reddit
I hate how true this is....have an upvote.
Lost-Tomatillo3465@reddit
we're dinosaurs apparently.
Beautiful_Arm8364@reddit
You should do a field trip to Portland. I hear the dream of the '90s is still alive there.
midwesternmayhem@reddit
FRED: Remember when people were content to be unambitious? Sleep to eleven? Just hangout with their friends? You'd have no occupations whatsoever. Maybe you work a couple of hours a week at a coffee shop?
CARRIE: Right. I thought that died out a long time ago
FRED: Not in Portland. Portland is a city where young people go to retire.
Porlandia peaked in the first episode.
Beautiful_Arm8364@reddit
Sure did.
Total-Sheepherder-63@reddit
My flannel shirt still looks fly...
the-dutch-fist@reddit (OP)
Funny thing is my kid already dresses like it’s the 90s
Ceorl_Lounge@reddit
I really, really need to visit sometime.
eejm@reddit
My son really enjoys Central/Eastern European history. He has a particular interest in the Yugoslav war in the early 90s. I remembered reading at the time of a Yugoslavian exchange student at another high school in my town. I didn’t know him, but the local newspaper covered his story. When he arrived in town at the start of the school year (1992, I think) his family was safe and there was no fighting in his area. By the end of the year, his brother had been sent to Switzerland for safety and his parents been separated by the fighting. They told him not to come home, so he had to scramble to extend his visa and attend college in the U.S. Thankfully he had some help in securing admittance and financing from a local college.
I was able to find the newspaper clippings online and sent them to my son. He was really interested in having the perspective of someone affected by the war in such a unique way.
Cysteine_Chapel64@reddit
I was sort of acquainted with someone in a similar situation in college. They were at a tennis camp when I was doing summer school at university when the Yugoslavian breakup/war really started and she really didn't have a place to go back to. I don't know what happened to them though.
eejm@reddit
Our newspaper followed this guy through his college graduation. I think his family ended up safe, but I know he didn’t return to the former Yugoslavia. I want to say he’s an attorney now.
BuckyGoldman@reddit
Just diving right into ancient history. Did we even keep historical records of those times?
HandshakeOfCO@reddit
We did, but we’ve since lost all the floppy disks
ToughCareer4293@reddit
It’s not that we lost the floppy disks, it’s that we no longer have the devices on which to read them. I can’t squeeze them small enough to fit into my USB port no matter how many times I try. 🤷🏽♂️
splorp_evilbastard@reddit
Zip drives!
ExtraAd7611@reddit
And the last person who could read them with the naked eye died in 2018.
the-dutch-fist@reddit (OP)
What happened in the 90s stays in the 90s
HermioneMarch@reddit
Lol
EddieKroman@reddit
When I was in school, one of the most popular classes was American Literature from the 1960’s. It was huge fun, the professor had been a flow blown counterculture guy from the 1960’s. He knew Timothy Leary on a personal level.
midwesternmayhem@reddit
See, this is what I missed out when my mother insisted I go to a tiny Midwestern college rather than giant state state school because tMc was "more academic". What passed for our coolest teacher was a nonagenarian who had corresponded extensively with Samuel Beckett in the 50s. While she was quite cool, I will emphasize she was over 90.
Bronnagh@reddit
It’s about the 1890s.
Honestly, students these days have it so easy. There is no “history” from five years ago.
largos7289@reddit
fffuuuccckkk.
BrinaElka@reddit
😆 my exact response
JCii@reddit
WHAT COLLEGE? IS THE COURSE ONLINE? WE NEED ANSWERS
the-dutch-fist@reddit (OP)
It’s a large state school in the Midwest
JCii@reddit
If so then there's no risk of stating the name and course
Ghosthost2000@reddit
I was a tween/teen in the 90s and I’d be interested in this history class. I actually watched the news back then due to being in Mock UN, speech & debate, and UIL current events. Easy A+ coming my way!
Next_Ad_4165@reddit
I read the newspaper daily…except I normally skipped the inside of the sports section.
Ok-meow@reddit
Oh I could ace that class! I 🤔
cleveland_leftovers@reddit
Peg your jeans? Done.
Tease your bangs? Done.
Explain the complexities of the Congo Wars?
Ehhh…..Could I interest you in a Zima?
elphaba00@reddit
To be fair, I did take a history of the 60s class in college (late 90s). So I guess that’s how my parents must have felt
revolutionoverdue@reddit
A class I would ace!
Significant-Way-7893@reddit
What? The 90's was only 10 years ago.
Rough-Patience-2435@reddit
They are supposed to wait at least 20 years before calling it "History".
QuietBirthday2470@reddit
I saw a post from someone that asked about something from “back in 2005”. I thought, WTF that wasn’t that long ago… until I realized it’s been 21 years.
Majestic-Selection22@reddit
I recently went to a vintage fest. Expected to see bell bottoms and maybe some Esprit clothing. No! It was all from the early 2000’s. One booth was selling the same exact purse I was carrying. Felt old, but excited that I had a hip vintage purse.
affectionateanarchy8@reddit
Youre gonna have to supplement it with old Kurt Loder clips
Equivalent_Gap_805@reddit
Good thing it's not about the 70's, it would be "ancient " history then.

I can use phrases "baaack in my days" now
copperfrog42@reddit
I use this phrase, in a joking way of course… Lucky for me, my offspring find it funny.
Fun-Position7750@reddit
I tell my adult children I’m not doing any of x, y, or z. I’ve already done that and I’m over it. I do what I want.
ExtraAd7611@reddit
You haven't yet?
HandshakeOfCO@reddit
I’ve ahead started saying “as was the style of the time”
Nearby_Belt9997@reddit
Same
A14BH1782@reddit
I've taught some of the 1990s, albeit in a course that spanned modern U.S. History. To do this is an opportunity to experience what historians know: one's recollections are problematic at best. At the same time, be aware of how reading published work on an era, journalistic or by historians, can influence your memories, too.
As I do, I opened the class with music, in this case Nirvana's Man Who Sold the World. This allowed me to (again) point out that David Bowie (introduced two weeks before) is in fact responsible for a lot more culture than most people realize.
ONROSREPUS@reddit
I hope that the teacher is at least a Gen X.
the-dutch-fist@reddit (OP)
Right? I can’t imagine this being done by a 25 year old grad assistant
BFB_2455@reddit
Except for them it really is history. For us, it was…life
Alternative-Law4626@reddit
How old is the prof?
OkSet1048@reddit
and then I died
Educational_Tap_4704@reddit
That's not yet "history". Or is it? Maybe I'm just old. Nah, my brain says I'm still 25
ExtraAd7611@reddit
Your aches and pains may have another opinion.

MDMA
Kalorama_Master@reddit
That’s the 80s
Relative-Accountant2@reddit
It drifted well into the 90s.
sciguyC0@reddit
I can see it:
Fall of the Berlin wall (though double-checking, that was late '89 which may be close enough), Germany's reunification, first Gulf war, breakup of the USSR, Hubble Space telescope, establishment of the European Union, first steps of a public internet as an "information superhighway", globalization, OKC bombing, Columbine, Y2K, etc. And of course the decade with the best music ever. ;)
the-dutch-fist@reddit (OP)
From the course description this looks like a good guesstimate on what it’ll look like.
HandshakeOfCO@reddit
Final exam question: explain and reflect on the symbolism of the Great Cornholio.
Infinite-Lychee-182@reddit
Well, I did a history of the 60s class, so... shit, I'm old.
ExtraAd7611@reddit
It was a busy decade at the dawn of the Republic and the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. The Bill of Rights ratified, cotton gin patented, smallpox vaccine, the French Revolution raged, the slave rebellion in Haiti, etc.
the-dutch-fist@reddit (OP)
😂😂😂

That's cool and sad at the same time
MrsQute@reddit
That's fucking awesome!
I'd be interested in what textbooks they might use.
