People with that tinker with the way their car sound... Why?

This isn't a bashing post; yes, I do have negative thoughts behind it.
But I am coming through genuine curious and trying to keep my opinion out of it.
What is it that you find cool about having a really loud exhaust that makes that popping noise?
What do you think other people think about it?
Do you acknowledge it's a nuisance but don't care? or do you think it isn't a nuisance?
Why does your car make a louder sound mean it is better? What's the theory behind it?
Is there ever a point where you get embarrassed about it? Like pulling up to an interview?
Thank you in advance for educating me.

The only people who like those loud car pops etc are those in that community. Fortunately for the tinkerers they're usually in that community.
