Experience moving a dog from the US to South Africa with Air Animal Pet Movers

We recently relocated from the US to South Africa with our dog and used Air Animal’s “Book & Fly” service. Our dog arrived safely in Cape Town, which obviously matters most, but the process itself was far more stressful and client-managed than we expected.

To be clear: international pet relocation is complicated. We understood that going in. South Africa has strict import requirements, multiple vet/testing dependencies, airline coordination, cargo handling, customs clearance, etc. That was never the issue.

The issue was that Air Animal never provided a clear, actively managed timeline or consolidated requirements list. Communication around documentation readiness, flight timing, crate requirements, and shipment sequencing was often unclear or delayed, which meant we ended up managing large parts of the process ourselves.

Ironically, we independently handled the South African permit process and customs clearance side without any real issues. The problems were specifically around Air Animal’s coordination of the export process.

One major example: early on, Air Animal suggested a departure timeline that we ourselves realized was not feasible because of testing windows and sequencing requirements. We pushed back and changed the timing because it became obvious the original schedule would not work. Later, flight changes were framed as though they were proactive accommodations by Air Animal, when in reality they were largely corrections to timeline problems we identified ourselves.

Even on the day we dropped our dog at cargo, we were still clarifying labels, paperwork, and final details. Imagine taking your dog to an airport cargo facility for an international flight and still wondering whether everything is actually correct and your dog will be accepted. That is not a feeling I’d wish on anyone during an international move.

What frustrated us most afterward was Air Animal’s response to our concerns. Rather than acknowledging communication gaps or coordination issues, they progressively narrowed the description of their service and characterized it as essentially just “flight booking.” That was not our understanding when we engaged them, nor does it align with parts of their own contract language regarding coordination and documentation handling.

I’m posting this mainly because when I was researching pet relocation companies, I would have wanted an honest, detailed account like this from someone who actually went through the process.

My advice if you use Air Animal, especially under “Book & Fly”:

Again, our dog arrived safely and we are grateful for that. But the process was far more reactive and stressful than we expected from a company with decades of experience in international pet relocation.
