Gutter cleaning: how often is actually necessary in Texas?

I know the general recommendation is twice a year, but we live in Arlington and honestly the gutters do not seem to get that many leaves. We have a couple of oak trees nearby but not directly over the roof. Last time I looked up there, the gutters were mostly clear except for some granules from the shingles. I am trying to figure out if I really need to pay for professional gutter cleaning twice a year or if once is enough. What has your experience been? Also, is there anything else I should be checking during gutter season besides debris buildup?

I don't think there's a set rule like "2x per year". Just look in the gutter. Is is obstructed? During a rainstorm, is the water running out of the downspouts?
Local roofers and gutter guys can add leafguards for a reasonable price.
You need to be checking any french drains. In my experience, those get clogged more easily and actually might require professional cleaning 1-2x per year.

I've lived in Dallas, Plano and Carrollton for the last 10 years. I generally check my gutters once a year. The only real gutter issue I have is off my pergola - so I just get up there with a ladder and leaf blower. I'd suggest you go out in a good rain storm and check your downspouts. If they appear to be flowing well, and you don't have large trees around you home - every couple years would probably be enough.

Really going to depend on the specific house. You can get up there with a ladder to peak over and see if they look clogged. If they do, grab some gloves and scoop the clog out. Gutter cleaning is pretty easy to DIY.
