Tinned Mackerel in Tom Sauce with pickled beetroot and gherkins, with a decaf black coffee. (I was in a hurry and needed something healthy)

I thought it was a recipe from a cookbook from Donner Pass back in the mid 1800s

The only thing I don’t think I would eat here are those pickles, the rest actually looks like a decent quick meal.

The only thing I would eat here is the pickles lol ...and coffee

Looks fine.
KyddCotten@reddit
Whos tom? And why are we eating sauces made out of him?
Adventurous-Vast281@reddit
It's a throw back to the pre-food safety years. Someone somewhere read The Jungle and thought, "Ah, the good ol' days."
Fun_Environment3792@reddit
How is that healthy?
Fine-Upstairs-6284@reddit
How is it not? That’s a very nutrient dense meal
Fun_Environment3792@reddit
So much salt.
ThirdBorracho@reddit (OP)
12% of daily allowance - not too bad for lunch
IamDoobieKeebler@reddit
Ain’t no way. I’m not going all anti sodium necessarily but the pickles by themselves have to hit that 12% easy.
ThirdBorracho@reddit (OP)
The 12% was just for the fish - but 3 small pickles dont add THAT much.
IamDoobieKeebler@reddit
Okay, well you implied the 12% was for the whole lunch. Again im not on the super anti sodium brigade but fwiw you are definitely underestimating the sodium in the meal. Pickled vegetables are adding a lot of sodium.

Go eat grass. Not touch salt in there.
Rokronroff@reddit
What are you, 80?
SteveFrench12@reddit
It shouldnt be too much and even if it is that wouldn’t change how healthy it is.
Honestbabe2021@reddit
There’s always one of you somewhere to ruin someone else’s health vibe. It’s not too much salt.
Fine-Upstairs-6284@reddit
Not really. Nothing about this meal screams sodium overload
ThirdBorracho@reddit (OP)
The mackrel is just over 200 calories, 20g of protein, low in saturated fat, low in sugar
So the whole meal was around 300 calories.
Alphageek11644@reddit
Tom sauce?
ThirdBorracho@reddit (OP)
tomato sauce (not like ketchup, its Mackerel in a tomato sauce in a tin)
Alphageek11644@reddit
Ah, another person too lazy to type out the full word to save 2 seconds.
MonsieurSpamalot@reddit
Tam sass
possessoroflimbs@reddit
This looks very healthy, however, I just know your breath was KICKIN after this one
ThirdBorracho@reddit (OP)
black coffee and fish? wretched. :D
JackSlater555@reddit
Must really like sour and bitter flavors huh?
