I really like Stoegers. They are owned by Beretta. Their pistols shoot well, are accurate and are also comfortable. Not much better in their price point imo.

My wife has the STR-9 and loves it. She has around 3,500 rounds through it with zero issues. The only problem isn’t it only came with one magazine and one back strap and finding more was a little challenging. Every place was sold out and we had to wait a few extra weeks.

Right now PSA has CZ82 pistols for under $200. Not a hyper modern defensive pistol, but I've read they're the best of the Makarov caliber pistols. Should make a good CCW or home defense piece. Classy aesthetics, too.

Arex Delta Gen 2 lineup. Fantastic oddball guns and optics cut versions have all the mounting plates for every main pistol red dot around.

If you're on a budget and want a gun for self defense and care about nothing but practicality and reliability, a Glock.

Police trade-ins
g1Razor15@reddit
For sure. I carried a Glock 23 for a while that was a PD trade in. Came with 3 magazines all for around $300
GarageExisting9522@reddit
Agree. Police trade in Glocks.

BCA Grizzly or PSA Dagger

But define "budget". To one person that's $2k, to another it's $100.

Just get a 2011 and don’t look back

What budget?
DashMcGee@reddit
It depends on the budget. A good gun for under $200 is different from a $400 budget.
crittr_gittr@reddit
Springfield xdm-e that goes on sale at Sportsman's every month or two for around 380

Glock… any Glock
DeFiClark@reddit
Used: LE trade in P17 or P19 Glocks or trade in S&W M&P
New: Tisas 1911, S&W M&P 2.0
Sensitive_Box_@reddit
Police trade in Glock 19.
raz-0@reddit
Probably the absolute best bang for the buck is a used ruger p95. It's not terribly hard to find one well under $300, and they run.
Important-Nobody-228@reddit
Canik, Echelon, Glock, Smith & Wesson M&P
CapnCurt81@reddit
If you can afford it: new Glock. If you can’t: used Glock.
HumanAntagonist@reddit
The smith and wesson sd9 2.0 is really not a bad gun at all. Goes bang.
stringrbelloftheball@reddit
Eaa windicator .357 has been great in my opinion.
Price is higher than when i got it by more than $100. That being said keep an eye open for used or a price drop.
Not2worried@reddit
Depends on budget. Xd mod 3 and Canik one series is great at $300.
RXM or Shield in the $400 range.
Dirty_Blue_Shirt@reddit
P10c or RXM are the best budget options IMO.
MajorProphet90@reddit
A used M&P is super hard to beat. It's a Top tier self defense handgun for sure
skimaskschizo@reddit
Depending on your budget, I hear good things about the PSA dagger.
LegendActual@reddit
Ruger RXM. Glock 19 for about half the price from a pair of actual reputable manufacturers instead of some no name import.
kilroy-was-here-2543@reddit
Used or even new smith and Wesson shield
poopbutt42069yeehaw@reddit
P10c, beretta apx, canik makes some budget options, PSA has the dagger kin which are Glock gen 3 clones (I believe) and they are very low pried, never used one so idk the reliability on that.

New, the P10.
Used, its really hard to beat a PD trade in Glock for the price
