I picked up my first-grader early yesterday. She had just gotten to lunch, but THANKFULLY she was allowed to take this home.

The cheese was solidified. The broccoli was tough, warm, and dry. She says she loves when this is on the menu and will miss it in the summer.

I remember having almost the exact same meal (minus broccoli) as a kindergartener in the 80s. Coagulated nacho cheese skin and everything. Really wild they’re still feeding kids that forty years later.
SiLeNZ_@reddit
How else will they guarantee the health insurance companies a steady line of ~~profit~~ patients?
Ill-Victory-5351@reddit
eating government cheese at an early age doesn’t cause chronic health conditions. But kids deserve better meals regardless.
_-whisper-_@reddit
Lack of nutrition at an early age absolutely causes chronic health conditions 😂
SiLeNZ_@reddit
Eating that slop at such an early age absolutely will lead to chronic health conditions.
TurtlemanScared@reddit
Like what?
Newclearfallout@reddit
Childhood obesity, terrible food habits and malnutrition.
American food habits are bad. Iv met autistic kids with more of a pallet for healthy food than some of these teenagers.
SiLeNZ_@reddit
I swear, the people in here denying this are crazy. And part of the problem. How much worse does our health need to collectively get before we realize the food we eat plays a role?
SiLeNZ_@reddit
Diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular problems, colon cancer. There’s a reason America has such a high rate of these health issues, compared to other developed nations. They feed their kids incredibly healthy foods compared to us, and you really think that won’t have any impact? You must be American lmao
ironicallydepressed@reddit
I'd love to see the source on this. Media worthy, if true.
But it sounds like the source is "trust me bro", so nah.
SiLeNZ_@reddit
The fact you think shitty processed foods won’t have an impact in adulthood is crazy. I guess that’s why America has such a high rate of diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease, to name a few.
https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2667368125000476
I’m at work, but since you’re in such denial, here you go lmao.
Ill-Victory-5351@reddit
Yeah I’m not going to trust a paper that cites MAHA reports. Bffr.
structural inequalities and school shootings harm children, but some people believe it’s nachos and vaccines!
SiLeNZ_@reddit
Mate, if you want to keep on believing what we feed our children has no impact on their future health, do you.
ironicallydepressed@reddit
Lmao that's not what I said at all, but nice projection. I never denied that eating shitty processed food CAN lead to health problems, but the way you are phrasing it seems like you think it's all but guaranteed that if you eat this even once then you are going to face serious health problems. That's just simply not true. It takes a habit to form.
SiLeNZ_@reddit
Yeah… and that’s exactly what these kids are being fed. Do you really think they just feed them this one time? What are you even saying
ironicallydepressed@reddit
Just because they are fed this way in schools doesn't mean they don't then go home and eat healthy with their parents. You are projecting.
SiLeNZ_@reddit
There’s a reason Americans are dealing with higher percentages of obesity, and all the other illnesses I mentioned. And I’m shocked you’re saying this isn’t part of the problem. They eat this shit for lunch daily, until they graduate high school. The exceptions would be families that can afford to send their kids to school with a healthier lunch.
Europeans feed their students far healthier meals, and surprise, they have far lower rates of every disease I mentioned.
ironicallydepressed@reddit
Again, that's not what I said at all. You keep projecting these arguments onto me that I'm not even making lmao.
This "food" is served, but not all kids eat it. Some bri g food from home. Some can't afford school food at all.
You really need to stop with the "this is the one and only cause of obesity" angle, because it's not the only cause. The American diet epidemic is rooted in bad habits, not the 5-times-a-week, sub-800-calorie "meal".
Your argument is incredibly disingenuous to the root causes of the American Obesity Epidemic.
curt_schilli@reddit
Whoever allowed this meal to be served to children should be arrested lol

Toucanplaythatgame-2@reddit
And then you have people who say they should cut funding for kids to be fed at all. Because taxes are meant to benefit them and them alone, and not the community.
Adventurous-Vast281@reddit
No, taxes are only meant for unnecessary military spending and the gilding fetish of our current "president".
Epion660@reddit
Shitty food porn, and you still managed to make it about trump. Grow up.
cityshepherd@reddit
I mean the fact of the matter is that a whole lot of children all around the country depend on this shitty food porn, and for some of them it’s the only food they get all day.
That is super fucked, and it’s ultra super fucked because we as a country could absolutely arrange for kids to have genuinely decent meals instead of what you see pictured here… but the party in control of our government continues to make it perfectly clear that they would rather children suffer (because they view poor people as nothing more than filthy animals who exist solely to be exploited).
I think it’s a very grown up thing to do to acknowledge that… but you do you duder.
Conscious_Music_1729@reddit

I had someone aggressively demanding to see proof of the checks i had used to pay for other people's kids to be fed. Like motherfucker, that's what my TAXES should be for, and I pay those already! I have NO problems with my tax dollars being used to feed kids a decent fucking meal, that is not the gotcha you think it is. Absolute sociopaths.
Toucanplaythatgame-2@reddit
I had one say to me that "it's the parents' responsibility, so it shouldn't be on them to alleviate the their bad choices". And I was like "oh yes, the choice of being in a financial crisis and kids should be the ones who should suffer from said "choices", right?"
ScroochDown@reddit
Right! Like no, in an ideal world it shouldn't be. But I also don't fucking think that innocent children should starve just to stick it to their parents, Jesus fucking Christ.

Yeah I was the kid who NEEDED that school lunch. When EBT groceries ran out, the last 2 weeks or so all I ate was saltines, baking chocolate, PB if we had it, wonder bread if it wasn't moldy yet, and condiments.
The ppl who adopted me cooked from scratch. So all food was frozen, or dry like beans and rice. They were old, so there'd be stretches where they'd stay in bed literally all day for days on end and not cook. Once the consumables were ate up, we starved.
I'd smuggle school lunch extras for my siblings. I remember indescribable hunger, can't imagine no school lunch on top of that ache.

That stuff did pass though, or at least to some extent, and the food they were getting from that program was basically inedible. TahiniInMyVeins@reddit
Honestly yes, without exaggeration. Whoever is controlling the factors and making the decisions that led to this being the lunch provided to a child in school should in fact be arrested. Whether it’s the policies/priorities or someone just straight up pocketing tax dollars, yes there is someone out there and probably more than a few someones, who deserves jail time. They will likely never see the inside of a cell. But they deserve to.
kristinyash@reddit
Bet you inmates get better food. Maybe no choccy milk tho
Nothingisperfect33@reddit
It’s pretty darn similar… and yeah, no chockie milk :( ate that stuff for 2 years. They do serve a cake square with every meal to “ make sure we get our calories” I used to work out every day at least twice a day and even when I traded my cakes for wet overcooked tasteless “veggies “ I was still like 230 pounds. I swear they sprinkle everything with a secret weight gain powder we don’t know about. Oh and every oat or grain like for breakfast came in a giant barrel that said “for zoos or institutions only” on a bright orange sticker.
goya_madrugada@reddit
The way zoos and institutions + prisons are all lumped together. Wtf😭😭
ironicallydepressed@reddit
Prisons ARE the institutions.
Disastrous-Work-7669@reddit
This is facts. Most jails I've been to here in Kentucky use kellwell as their supplier which was actually decent enough but when I was in Fayette county they use airmark which is much lower grade food with green turkey and almost always just rice with the turkey or the most god awful ground beef you ever ate. And I can 100% vouch for the bags having for zoos and institutions only and the giant bag of Kool aid mix said the same thing with a big skull and crossbones under it lol
Nothingisperfect33@reddit

Cheese is considered a meat alternate. This district has just chosen to do the least nutritious possible cheese route available. But.. kids fucking love nacho day. Considering it’s late May, this is probably a last day of school type treat.
Under the National School Lunch Program (NSLP), you can serve 100% full-strength juice as fruit, but it cannot exceed half of your total weekly fruit offerings. The remainder of the week's fruit requirement must be met with whole or cut-up fruits (fresh, frozen, canned, or dried).

Probably 100 grams of sugar in that meal. Wow, that's disgusting.

What the hell are we feeding our kids in schools?
nocleverusername-@reddit
60 year old here having trouble wrapping my head around this. We had real food served on real plates and real silverware back in the day. Real food cooked on site by real school cooks. It was good.
How in the hell did we get to this??
(IKIK, defunded schools and capitalistic enshittification)
PetiteBonaparte@reddit
I went to private school and this is the same stuff we were served. At some point its just about not caring.
tartarus2@reddit
My schools were some of the lowest ranking in the state, yet I didn't get served such bad food. Where are these schools?
balirosa@reddit
Those kids waited all day for nachos
SiLeNZ_@reddit
That’s an insult to nachos.
balirosa@reddit
That baby wasn’t going to leave her bucket of cheese behind the kids been talking about nachos all morning
TheBracketry@reddit
Fresh broccoli? My school never had that. And our nacho cheese had so little actual cheese in it, it would need to get well below room temp to ever consider solidifying.

This is fucking horrific. And so obviously American. And then we wonder why health issues are so rampant.
UpgradeCheetah@reddit
Unfortunately this is the only hot meal for some kids. At least they could take it home. Just saw our local school district is giving free meal for the summer but they have to eat them at the school.
