What matters when buying a budget dash cam ?

I have an old model car and with the way people are driving these days I figured it's time to buy a dash cam, this is not something I was willing to break the bank on. So I wonder can I get the same specifications in a budget dash cam that will still make it a reliable driving cam, I don't know what exactly matters the most because most of the product listings the focus heavily on specifications resolution, frame rate and app features it for a simple person like me I will just want something reliable that has a bit of night vision.
I want it to be able to record reliably without freezing, overheating or corrupting fails and that is something way more valuable then all the advantages. It working at night is very crucial because most of the incidents that happen on the road happen at night.
When browsing on Amazon and Alibaba I see most of the dash cams look similarities a huge price difference so I would need help from some of the previous owners of dash cams how to translate all these futures into reliable long-term purchasing decision.

I'll add that whatever dash cam you get you'll want to keep it cool. Those things get seriously hot and I suspect the first one I got burnt out in 2 years because: 1. The get pretty hot on their own just operating. 2. I live in a desert climate that gets pretty hot in the summer making the camera unit crazy hot.
I bought a fan with a big clamp on it that can adjust. Found somewhere to clamp it and point it at the camera. I turn my AC on and point the vents into the fan Airstream yo help with it also.

Id pick a reliable one over a cheap one. Whats the point of having a dashcam when it craps out when you actually need it. Dont forget to factor in a dashcam rated memory card (high endurance, max endurance).
Have a look at the viofo range. There are some other brands which are considered reliable. But Ive had personal experience with viofo. Cant speak for the others.
