Do you still get your receipts from the supermarket?
Posted by nfk99@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 108 comments
i got home from aldi and i felt my shopping was too expensive, i checked the receipt and there was 17 x loose red peppers = £11.90. on it and i didn't buy thoses.
simple error not a big deal but if i had not had the reciept i would never have known.
i always found it odd that they ask if you want a receipt... sketchy if you ask me.
JamesL25@reddit
My local Lidl make you scan your receipt on the way out
GroupApprehensive978@reddit
I just scan my lidl app. The receipts go straight to the app.
No_Preference9093@reddit
Wait you can scan the app to exit?
GroupApprehensive978@reddit
No. Im saying i don't get receipts as they are on the app anyway.
nfk99@reddit (OP)
even when you go through the manned checkout?
JamesL25@reddit
Often don’t have anybody on the manned checkout unless you want to buy certain items
Mukatsukuz@reddit
My local Lidl only recently got the self-checkout and there was a bloke manning the till last week. I was buying beer so I decided it was quicker to do that than scan the beer and wait for him to come off the till to verify my age.
When I got to him he said "paying in cash, obviously?" and I said "um... no, by card" and he replied "you do know that that's what the self checkouts are for, don't you?".
Since then I base which I will use on the staff member on duty that day.
thewindypops@reddit
Based on that conversation, I'd exclusively use the manned tills going forwards.
But then again, I'm awkward like that.
A_Literal_Fruit_5369@reddit
Nowadays, we have to get a receipt in order to leave the stores where I live. There’s barriers which only open when you scan a receipt. There’s weirdest part is even though you need a receipt to leave, it still gives the option of no receipt
eoghan7698@reddit
I only use self checkout and I still get it because I’m paranoid of the alarm going off and not being able to prove what I bought
Pigflap_Batterbox@reddit
I’m the opposite - I have this desire to be challenged and say ‘dunno mate didn’t ask for a receipt can you grab me a cup of tea while you check the cameras, machine history and so on’.
W35TH4M@reddit
You come across like a right knob
Pigflap_Batterbox@reddit
I also cum across your mum. Ba boom.
Mazuna@reddit
You’re not disproving the point.
Pigflap_Batterbox@reddit
Neither is their mum!
Did_OJ_Simpson_do_it@reddit
Same. Only ever been questioned about it once though (bought headphones that set off the alarm, guard quickly glanced at my receipt and said it was fine).
CapedCapybara@reddit
If you scan a clubcard or are able to tell them the machine you used, they can find your list anyway :)
louwyatt@reddit
Technically speaking they can't stop you leaving unless they have concrete evidence. That would be false imprisonment. So you just ask for that proof, keep in mind if they claim they've witnessed it that is technically concrete proof.
Beartato4772@reddit
Yes if you stand around for 5 minutes while they poke at it.
Or you can just show them a bit of paper.
PetersMapProject@reddit
I had a member of staff act like a knob in Lidl a few weeks ago. Apparently I was buying too much shopping (?!) and he tried to tell me I wasn't allowed. Argued the toss and won.
Got home, looked at my receipt and he'd added on a pain au raisin I absolutely didn't buy.
silverfish477@reddit
Sketchy? Oh man. What a childish assumption.
pervertsage@reddit
Look out, the big adult is here with their fucking important opinion.
ploddingonward@reddit
Needed that laugh, thanks 🤣
nfk99@reddit (OP)
please explain youngling...
YummyBumps@reddit
I get it and check it before I leave. Offers don't always go through or prices don't match what I though they were.
nfk99@reddit (OP)
Yeah, suspicious that the are asking if you want it.... of course i bloody well do.
W35TH4M@reddit
The supermarket I work in stopped printing receipts automatically because the vast majority don’t want them
Familiar_Swan_662@reddit
Most people dont want the receipt though. How are they supposed to know if you want it or not if they dont ask?
TheRadishBros@reddit
I’d assume the majority don’t want the receipt, actually.
Original_Document748@reddit
How is it suspicious? 😂 not everyone wants there receipt. You're weird.
Vegetable-Target-767@reddit
I’ve found my person. My kids found me embarrassing standing there checking and complaining if things are not as they should be.
eggs_and_ham_i_am@reddit
Do you do that thing where you walk really really slowly towards the exit whilst reading it? Ideally in the middle of the route to the exit to guarantee yourself totally in the way? 😉
UniquePotato@reddit
Morrisons have all your receipts in the More section in their More App
Ruskythegreat@reddit
Our local Sainsbury's requires you to scan the receipt to get out. So yes!
CassetteLine@reddit
Nope, I generally avoid them if I can. Just one less thing to bin.
Salt-Evidence-6834@reddit
I've earned almost £200 doing Google Opinion Rewards & receipts are part of that.
They've allowed me to buy a load of emulators, some games, & usually pay for my Google One subscription each month.
VolcanicBear@reddit
Jesus Christ, how many do you do? It's like 13p per receipt.
Salt-Evidence-6834@reddit
It's mostly surveys, which have earned me almost £170, but 256 receipts have given me £16.33. I've been doing them since the beginning of 2018.
Initially, I bought all the apps that I wanted with it, but now just use it to pay for Google One for extra cloud storage & sometimes for Mullvad.
VolcanicBear@reddit
Aaah cool, yeah I've bought a few apps but I don't get many surveys.
Although having checked it now I am surprised how much I've had from it! £140 since August '16, £115 of which was from surveys.
Is it pretty much only "did you visit this shop, and pay?" and "what did you think of this YouTube video?" surveys that you get?
sihasihasi@reddit
£197, here. No receipts, though.
mdmnl@reddit
I do Google, and checkout smart and Shopmium for certain cashback/discounts too. Adds up.
snackspayne@reddit
i bet you got 6 bananas
nfk99@reddit (OP)
hey thats right whats the significance?
eivoooom@reddit
I usually ask if someone wants their receipt because it doesn't always print
Travellingjake@reddit
Last week after my shop at Morrisons I thought the bill was a bit large - on checking the receipt, there were 2 completely different items charged at full price, although the labelling on the shelf said they were discounted, and they'd scanned a bottle of prosecco twice.
They refunded the difference, but it was like an extra £10 on a £25 shop, so not exactly insignificant!
Baynonymous@reddit
I find Morrisons the least trustworthy supermarket. My favourite was when the more card system was down so they couldn't apply discounts. This was refunded as extra more points instead of the extra cash I had to spend.
They also don't stock their shelves properly, so higher priced items at a quick glance are next to lower cost stickers. It's the only supermarket where I have to compare everything (name, weight etc) to the sticker otherwise I'll get fleeced at the tills
Funky_monkey2026@reddit
Yup. Just when I finally managed to forget what went through as a watermelon last year, I get reminded again!
CreativeAdeptness477@reddit
Absolutely always. Proof of purchase, refund, etc etc.
wybird@reddit
At the big Sainsbury’s you have to scan your receipt to go through a set of barriers so you have to take it
nfk99@reddit (OP)
interesting, how do you get out if decide not to buy anything.. or what happens to me is that i leave my bags in the car....
wybird@reddit
You just wait for someone else to leave
Familiar_Swan_662@reddit
Or go back out through the entrance. They dont stop you if they can see you dont have anything
wybird@reddit
You have to go through one-way barriers to enter, you can’t leave the same way at ours
Beartato4772@reddit
In theory you go find a staff member to beg to let you out.
In reality you just walk through the bloody thing.
Hookton@reddit
Always get it, always check it.
SatisfactionMoney426@reddit
Yes - with no receipt and no shop carrier bags these days, I feel happier if I can prove that I bought an item if I need to. It feels weird to just walk out with, say, a bottle of wine, no recipt and no bag - like I just decided to pick it up and walk out with it ...
CanWeNapPlease@reddit
I do if it's a big shop. I had similar issue this week. Looked like my £1.50 potato bag scanned as a table umbrella for £10. I didn't notice until I looked through the receipt because I suspected it looked a little too expensive. I should have checked during the scanning process but if I did that every time I scanned a product it'd probably take me twice as long to scan! But I think I'll do that anyway from now on.
DeapVally@reddit
Only at Lidl, because you're kinda trapped otherwise. My local Morrisons has the same receipt scan gates to exit, but they just open normally, so I never bother there.
skatemoose@reddit
Yes, just incase something is off and needs to go back. Had to take sausages back one, they weren't the supermarket brand, so glad I had the receipt.
hughesyg@reddit
Only if it seems a bit more than I thought. I very rarely do a big shop though, more pop in every day.
My lidl receipts go to the app though so not there
discoveredunknown@reddit
No. That thermal paper is horrendous for you.
Effective-Fox-2892@reddit
Tin foil hat wearer
discoveredunknown@reddit
That’s nothing to do with being a tinfoil hat wearer lmao. Just limiting my exposure to BPA/BPS
Effective-Fox-2892@reddit
🤦♂️
discoveredunknown@reddit
BPAs are an actual thing you know. It’s not to foil bag wearing conspiracy theorist nonsense.
Effective-Fox-2892@reddit
Stop talking
discoveredunknown@reddit
This isn’t the zinger you think it is. You’re conflating people who think the earth is flat, think 9/11 was an inside job and think aliens exist and are being covered up with actual, backed evidence showing research into BPAs and their effect on the human body (notably gut microbiome) and chasing hormonal disruption. Plenty of other risks associated with them.
Beartato4772@reddit
You're not actually supposed to eat it.
Asher-D@reddit
That's really only if you have prolonged exposure.
discoveredunknown@reddit
For sure, but in an ever plastic world it compounds with everything else we consume/in close contact with, so I just try to limit my exposure where possible.
Broad-Raspberry1805@reddit
What?
TheNotSpecialOne@reddit
Only if I bought something that may need returning in the future such as clothing and electronics. You're standard grocery shopping of bread milk eggs and so on, I can't be bothered with a receipt for that
terryjuicelawson@reddit
I do as a point of interest, unless I am only buying one or two things. I don't think it is sketchy, why would the person on the till want to rip you off for a bit of extra profit. They just want to save a small amount of paper and time.
Flavourifshrrp@reddit
My cousin on a busy Friday night when I was visiting him in London took us to a non chain restaurant and we had dinner.
When the bill came he was just going to start paying his share etc before I checked it and they had added on something like four or six pints we didn’t have. They apologised. Of course it could of been human error we all make mistakes, but I always wondered if they do that on busy nights and people who have had a few beers and have a few quid just pay it and don’t even think about it.
Last-Deal-4251@reddit
I do because I was accused of shoplifting a few years ago in Paris and it’s made me a bit paranoid. I also check my receipt to make sure I’m not being ripped off.
Ok_Aioli3897@reddit
Yes because sometimes I get stopped and it helps prove that the products aren't from that supermarket
Beartato4772@reddit
Yes because there's a large man near the door who might ask for it.
3HeadedBoa@reddit
Everytime I feel I don't need a receipt I get home I find a reason I should've kept the receipt to go back and return a defective product. Got stuck with 2 big boxes and soft maltesers that ended up in the bin cause I thought I'd be fine without one
Effective-Fox-2892@reddit
You don’t always need a receipt, some customer service staff are very helpful
3HeadedBoa@reddit
This is very true. I had to go back once as the mouthwash I brought which was still sealed was leaking from the cap and the manager just asked the rough time I paid for it and he check the cameras and let me get a replacement
DameKumquat@reddit
I usually keep track as the prices flash up on the display. If I'm confident I've been charged accurately or possibly less, I don't bother with receipts.
Unless I'm buying clothes or something I might want to return, obviously - though with supermarket clubcard like Nectar that's not necessary, they can find the purchase anyway.
ScholarOk4307@reddit
Yeah I do at Lidl. Otherwise I can't get out...
Effective-Fox-2892@reddit
Just ask the person at the tills to let you out…
TomfromLondon@reddit
Yep as we scan a bar code to exit
EnjoyableBleach@reddit
Yeah it's sent via email before it gets delivered, useful for checking against as they sometimes miss the odd item.
Effective-Fox-2892@reddit
No one is talking about online shopping…
Gold-Tea1520@reddit
I never get the receipt, I know what it should cost
Wrong-Step-4241@reddit
I always grab the receipt no matter what, especially after hearing stories like yours. It’s wild how a tiny mistake can cost you money without you ever realizing it. The self-checkout paranoia is real too—no way I’m risking a false alarm without proof of purchase. Doesn’t hurt to double-check before you leave the car park, honestly.
busbybob@reddit
Only when i buy a aldi middle isle item
cupoftea193@reddit
I only do when I buy something I know might not work or I might want to return. It’d be best practice to always get a receipt but in reality it’s a floating bit of paper that will get in the way when I’m looking for my keys and I console myself that being undercharged and overcharged balances itself out in the end. I love that Sainsbury’s doesn’t need a receipt for returns anymore as they can check your nectar card.
Sapphira_console_5s@reddit
Sometime I forgot.
witchysusie@reddit
I always get a receipt especially at Tesco as one time I had a key ring that set off the alarm me & mum had spent over £100 (10 yes ago) I was standing on the esculater in front of the trolly I got off & stood there as 2 security were charging down, I was going to explain when they knocked my 75 yr old mother to the ground. No apologies, no asking for a receipt which I had ,no looking in my trolly just made me empty my bag, I was raging. I kicked up hell at the main company department, but was just told they did the right thing. I stopped using Tesco for years but now it's the only damn supermarket near me. But I definitely get a receipt.
nfk99@reddit (OP)
yeah tesco is crap.. i wont shop there, they nickle and dime everything
colin_staples@reddit
Yes
If you need to return something, and you don't have a receipt, what's your plan?
They now need you to scan a receipt to open a barrier. So why even give you the option of not getting a receipt?
Asher-D@reddit
I add everything to in my head roughly and if the number they tell me to pay sounds off, I immiedtlay check the receipt before I leave. I have caught errors that they happily corrected before I even left and refunded me the money I overpaid by.
Squadrone_Rosso@reddit
I always do as got stopped by security on Saturday leaving Tesco despite having a security tag removed at Checkout. Seems these was a label thing as well. A much easier conversation when you have the paperwork.
Proof-Order2666@reddit
Keep a few receipts and look again next year to see how much everything has gone up it’s frightening
AdCareful9415@reddit
Yes always get receipt.
megthebat49@reddit
I use self checkout
If there isn't one then I just add up the cost of everything as I go along, that way I can point out any issues at the till before I even pay.
Proud_Ad_8915@reddit
I get a receipt every time.
swooning_basil@reddit
yes, or at least for the shops where you don't get a digital receipt in the app. it makes it vastly easier to get a refund if anything is wrong.
Playful_Echidna_3465@reddit
Never used to, until some started making you get it to leave the self checkout area.
Chopsticks_Charlie@reddit
I always do tbf, unsure why
nfk99@reddit (OP)
me too
simmyawardwinner@reddit
yes every time
Existing_Doughnut985@reddit
I only use self checkout so I know whats being added as I go along, receipt aint really necessary
Fraggle_ninja@reddit
Use self check out and check the items as they scan?
