Why would they do this, the new AMG GT 4 door fully electric.

People can't stfu about Chinese market when they see an ugly car meanwhile Chinese EVs look completely normal
triplevanos@reddit
Hilarious that people on this sub will insinuate that Chinese buyers like ostentatious, silly looking cars… and then totally ignore the American truck market and how ridiculous they look (looking at you, Silverado)
TangerineBroad4604@reddit
Lexus predator grille debuted in the US (and Lexus remains a US-focused brand)
strongmanass@reddit
When Chinese cars look normal: "all the Chinese do is copy European designs"
When European cars look like caricatures of themselves: "Chinese buyers have no taste"
Kagenlim@reddit
I mean..Chinese market is why the G82 looks so wrong
strongmanass@reddit
That's just not true.
Kagenlim@reddit
Then why the pig nose other than the fact the Chinese market likes big grills?
strongmanass@reddit
Because the US market likes big grilles.
And because one particular BMW board member thought they weren't capitalizing on visual recognition enough and pushed the designers to make the grille bigger.
Kagenlim@reddit
The US market clowned on the BMW design team for the big grills tho
Then why the backtracking with the M1? Or shit, even the XM? It's clear that they tried to push it and failed spectacularly, I have seen more older generation 3/4s with the old grill than a G82
PotatoGamerXxXx@reddit
And yet it sold very well in US market. Funny how that works, eh?
TangerineBroad4604@reddit
The US market (i.e., sales figures, not Internet commenters) gobbled up the big grilles. The 4er's main market is the US (it sold a pittance in China), the iX and XM were specifically developed with the US market in mind...
strongmanass@reddit
The US market is the biggest market for the M3 and M4 which saw record sales last year.
What M1? And the XM's failure has nothing to do with its grille size.
zerosystem03@reddit
Given how many G8x I see on the road, the US market likes them too
TangerineBroad4604@reddit
Objectively untrue, BMW has explicitly stated the 4er (and especially the M4) were targeted at the US: https://g80.bimmerpost.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1805295
ASource3511@reddit
A lot of Chinese EV companies hire European designers so it makes sense that the cars look like what European cars used to look. Xiaomi bragged about having ex-Lambo Porsche designers & Chris Bangle in their team.
aaryg@reddit
Who cares. I'll never buy one. It doesn't affect me in any way
owenhargreaves@reddit
The best answer in this thread, everybody shitting all over it like they're voting with their wallets 🤣 I don't like it either and that couldn't be less important.
Parthorax@reddit
Good to know, what else don’t you care about? please tell us.
Fishgedon@reddit
This thing is so stupid, its a Coupe but its a 4 door. And it weighs 2500 KG, that is crazy, and the range is shit compared to its weight.
Its also ugly.
pernodforpassingtime@reddit
Wow it is truly pig ugly. The light bars, raccoon eyes/black bands, and obsession with a tri-star everything... so utterly tasteless it's pretty shocking. To say nothing of the weight issues. Good grief!
HiIary4Prison@reddit
It’s for the Chinese. They love this stuff.
mgobla@reddit
Aren't the Chinese going to buy domestic brands instead? People on this sub are constantly praising them and sayng how no one would buy other brands if they were available, so why would anyone buy a Merc in their home market?
strnfd@reddit
They love the coupe 4 door thing but idk if they'll like how ugly this is especially their local EVs which are generic too good looking cars.
big_cock_lach@reddit
Heavy use of logos and branding, particularly for premium Western products like Mercedes, is popular there but considered tacky elsewhere. Generally speaking, this market segment (upper middle class) in Northern Europe prefers subdued designs and finds flamboyant designs or logos to be tacky. In Southern Europe there’s a preference for more flamboyant designs, but logos are still considered tacky. America is more diverse regarding flamboyant/subdued designs, although they do prefer larger logos with logo spam (like in this Merc) is considered tacky. In China, this demographic prefers flamboyant styles with logo spam.
That’s all generalising preferences though, individuals will deviate from the norm these are just the norms based on cultural reasons though. That said, for China this is largely driven by their upper middle class being younger people who recently came into money and fast. The same demographic has similar preferences all around the world. Typically flamboyant luxury items sell on aspiration, status, and exclusivity. That doesn’t work well on those who are normalised to this wealth, but works really well on those who grew up without any wealth and are driven by these things. The same thing happened in America, and after a few generations we’ll see Chinese flamboyancy and materialism decline like we’ve seen in America.
pleasedonotredeem@reddit
My theory is that wealth is harder to accumulate in Western/Northern Europe (high taxes, more social supports, entrenched monopolies/oligopolies) so there are more "old money" buyers with conservative/restrained preferences. In China, there are way more "new money" buyers who, like new money all over the world and throughout history, prefer more flamboyant and extroverted style and design.
Frosty-Objective-270@reddit
This encapsulates Lamborghini
pleasedonotredeem@reddit
Yeah, it's especially fitting that Lamborghini was founded as a reaction to the establishment ("Your Ferrari clutch sucks, I'll make my own super car, with hookers and blackjack!").
And no pretense of motorsport, literally hookers and blackjack.
budgefrankly@reddit
Yeah, this is why no-one in Northern Europe ever buys Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Pagainis or specials like the Mclaren Senna /s
And if they do, they definitely don't pay Ferrari extra to put the shield on the size
DankeBernanke@reddit
Username checks out
party973@reddit
People say this every time there's ugly designs. Is it actually true or are you making a scapegoat for Mercedes?
Working_Elephant5344@reddit
Every time a car comes out with a giant grille and huge screens inside, I always see on Reddit that it’s because the Chinese market likes it. Not sure if there’s any data to support the claim though.
DankeBernanke@reddit
Not data but I live in China and this view is total bullshit. Chinese consumers like minimalism, it's the driving design language in most of the successful local brands (NIO, BYD, etc.)
ALOIsFasterThanYou@reddit
I’m just saying, if it was actually true, then Mercedes and BMW’s sales in China should be better than ever, since their designs supposedly appeal to Chinese so much nowadays. They are… right?
I mean, if it was true, it would be a huge surprise if their sales were tanking and they were losing market share to Chinese brands with minimalistic design like BYD, Xiaomi, and Huawei.
But ha, those Chinese brands. What do they know about Chinese tastes? As any Redditor will tell you, the Germans know best about what China wants.
Independent-Win-4187@reddit
They’re not buying this shit if they have BYD making beautiful cars now.
Avedas@reddit
I don't know how people keep repeating this when Chinese cars already look much better and less stupid.
TheSigma3@reddit
The "teeth" and "lips" make this look like a video game car. It's so unusual
Roboticpoultry@reddit
I wouldn’t call the last generation a looker but at least the design was coherent
budgefrankly@reddit
It's faster in a straight line than a Ferrari F80 at a tenth of the price.
It comfortably seats four adults with boot space for four carry-on sized pieces of luggage.
It's got a longer range than a Tesla Model S, at over 400 miles, which means it'll easily do 250 miles at motorways speeds.
If your local track installs a 600kW charger, you can do a dozen laps, plug in for 10mins, then head out and do a half dozen more.
The weight is a bit disappointing, but even so this is an impressive piece of engineering, that delivers a mix of performance and comfort that no other non-Chinese manufacturer can match.
opeth10657@reddit
Does it actually have cooling for that? A lot of the EVs overheat the batteries if you push them full out for that long.
budgefrankly@reddit
They claim it does. They say they've copied tech from the F1 team that flushes a lubricating oil through the battery pack, and that additionally they've varied the number of cells in the battery pack from front to back so that as the oil gets warmer there are fewer cells to cool, ensuring a constant heat transfer per cell.
This is also why it appears to have a massive transmission tunnel, apparently it's all to do with the oil cooling.
Time will tell I guess
DaBanninator@reddit
All the horsepower in the world can't fix that ugly POS.
budgefrankly@reddit
From the outside I think it's a pretty good-looking car, with the exception of the rear where the their version of a shield is less successful than Aston Martins.
As regards the cabin, if you replace the alcantara with leather and opt in for the panoramic roof I'll look instantly better.
I'm not a fan of Mercedes new screen approach, but I can tolerate it. Personally I preferred the EQS's (optional) approach of having a yacht-style wooden dash with embedded screens
Kagenlim@reddit
It just looks unbalanced, why not steal the light placement from like a SLS which is the king of big grill mercedes
strongmanass@reddit
Because if you're a lead designer you were given the project because of your own work and leadership's trust that you can create something that will resonate with buyers. You want to express your own ideas, not just copy your predecessor's work.
Kagenlim@reddit
There's moving the design standard on and there's completely wacking out of order. Look at mercedes in the last 20 years, different languages but each one carries on what the previous one did with elegance
This is just loud and just harsh, definitively not mercedes
strongmanass@reddit
1. You asked why they didn't just copy the SLS. I gave several reasons. Whether you think they were successful is a different issue.
budgefrankly@reddit
The same reason the CLA has the exact same design
Kagenlim@reddit
Those light bars are often placed where it flows and makes sense, just look at the Smart #1 for a picture on how a mercedes light bar looks like. Also the Ferrari's bar isn't a light bar per se, it's a homage to the Daytona
All the more reason to make it more tasteful. Look at how the Taycan used the lack of a need of a grill to make the front more evocative of the older 911 gens
Polestar looks good because they are pedestrian, for me the best looking modern EV you can buy is the Mustang Mach E, it's quite thought-out in proportions and has aged gracefully. But objectively, especially with the rear, the new Mercedes is ugly
budgefrankly@reddit
That was true of the 12 Cylindri, but now there's vertical bars across everything from the F80, to the Testarossa 849 to the Amalfi it's morphed into something else.
I like them because they lean into the modern, Apple asethetic. e.g. making a feature of the sensor housing instead of trying to hide it in the Polestar 2, Polestar 3 and the rest. They're distinctly handsome, modern-looking cars.
Similarly the interior uses screens, but instead removing dials to add a screen screen in which you just display a poor facsimile mechanical dial, it uses its screens to provide a modern digital way of showing information, like on an Apple Watch.
Effectively I like that they're trying to find tasteful ways of designing around new technology, instead of tacking on pastiches of old tech like fake grills and fake dials.
DaBanninator@reddit
It's the taycan's downs syndrome cousin
Torczyner@reddit
Just saw the EPA rating was 300 miles though.
budgefrankly@reddit
Where did you find that? As far as I know it's not been released yet. Just yesterday, Motortrend was saying
Ultimately, you're still driving for three hours on a highway before the car needs to stop, at which point most drivers will need a splash and dash themselves.
Torczyner@reddit
Not what I saw yesterday with the release but more in line being 315 to 365 miles and definitely not over 400 which is where the Model S still is even though this is a new car and the MS is now discontinued.
I agree with the drive time. I used to be a "no stops" road trip guy, not I enjoy a bathroom break and real food.
whiteraven13@reddit
The grill in the picture makes it look like it has an angry snarling face
Wolfo93@reddit
Welcome to the Chinese taste. Everything must look like a kitsch designer handbag with 50 logos
TangerineBroad4604@reddit
Can I introduce you to Miami and LA where we'll see these rolling around?
strongmanass@reddit
The rise of visible logos in fashion was popularized by US consumer demand.
LeobenCharlie@reddit
Yeah, but at least the interior and materials will probably be a huge downgrade compared to what we're used to from Mercedes
TangerineBroad4604@reddit
MB interior quality has been on the downgrade for over a decade at this point
T-Baaller@reddit
yeah but the inside is "stripclubmaxxing" as target demo would probably put it.
K_R_A_K_E_N_540@reddit
Heavier than ANY Tesla model 3, Y , S or X. How is Mercedes so inefficient lol?
xlb250@reddit
To be fair those are built like economy cars.
K_R_A_K_E_N_540@reddit
No, they're built efficiently. Taycan turbo has no business being that heavy. It's smaller, shorter, narrower than the Model S, slower to 100kmh, slower top speed, less efficient per 100km. Literally not one single metric that is better.
German brands suck at efficiency so they throw massive batteries to solve the problem and the weight goes up significantly. Tesla is focusing on the best efficiency so the battery packs can get smaller, therefore lighter
DaBanninator@reddit
I'll take the Tesla, thanks
Fishgedon@reddit
It's heavier than my Troopy, ridiculous.
owenhargreaves@reddit
If you're not a fan I highly recommend not buying one.
weirdo4909@reddit
https://www.mbusa.com/en/vehicles/model/gt/amg-gt-4-door/gt43c4
This is a replacement to this. Makes sense to me. The 2-door ICE/Hybrid remains alongside
funkybosss@reddit
I’m strangely drawn to its ugliness.
Mr_No_Chill2001@reddit
They haven't learn from the EQ. And honestly, Porsche Panamera and Taycan look way better with 4 doors than this.
Competitive-Sun8180@reddit
Mercedes is in a lot of trouble. 30 years of obsolescence has damaged the brand worldwide. The only thing they had was nice design, the engineering has long been subpar. The EQS was a massive flop, this will be even worse.
MRDR1NL@reddit
Because the Taycan is popular?
TangerineBroad4604@reddit
The Taycan sales has been plummeting YoY
MRDR1NL@reddit
My thoughts exactly. They wouldn´t start building this today. But it certainly made sense 3 to 5 years ago when Taycans flew off the shelfs like hot cakes.
m1llie@reddit
This sort of car is pure, distilled conspicuous consumption. The kind of person driving this thing wants you to look at their car and by extension look at them. They don't care if you're looking in disgust. Any attention will do, as long as they know that you know that they have more money than you.
Outrageous_Wedding18@reddit
Looks like CARP fish
Tumbleweedwhacker@reddit
GT now stand for gritting teeth because the front looks exactly like that.
xdr01@reddit
Performance Chinese EVs are insane. Cant hide forever.
BrunoEye@reddit
The most pointless thing you can do in a road legal car. They could make a car that can go 10x as fast and it wouldn't matter.
K_R_A_K_E_N_540@reddit
But if Porsche does it then it's amazing and the best car in the world. Lol
tokhar@reddit
Taycan sales would disagree…
budgefrankly@reddit
For most of its existence the Taycan has been slower and heavier than a Model 3 Plaid, despite costing more than twice as much.
It's likely true that luxury car buys won't buy EVs in the same way that they won't buy quartz watches.
However a big component of the Taycan's failure is that the price tag promised a degree of engineering excellence -- and hence exclusivity -- which the thoroughly mediocre drive-train failed to deliver.
Torczyner@reddit
Ah the model 3 Plaid. A car that never existed. You mean S?
budgefrankly@reddit
Apparently M3P is Model 3 Performance. It was released six months after the Taycan, was 200kg lighter, and did 0-60 in 2.9s, compared to 4.5 for the base Taycan.
You could get sub 2s with the Weissach pack, but for that money you could buy two M3Ps and still have money left for a charge or two.
tokhar@reddit
And the range, especially if you drove the car in “spirited manner” was laughably short.
party973@reddit
People were creaming themselves over the Veyron's top speed record, but now it's suddenly not impressive or relevant.
sauceagain@reddit
because you can slap an EV battery into anything and it will go fast. times are different speed isn’t what it used to be
party973@reddit
You make it sound like there's no awesome engineering behind hitting almost 500km/h in a vehicle, EV or not. The BYD we're talking about also had a sub-7 ring time, disregarding your straight line claim.
Kagenlim@reddit
Cause speed don't win races, consistent speed does
That's why the NIO EP9 is still so fondly remembered since it mastered the Nürburgring over than the Xiaomi cars. The Americans proved anyone can make a car that goes fast in a straight line, what's harder to do is a car that goes fast everywhere
BrunoEye@reddit
I also don't care about road car lap times. It's all arbitrary numbers that has very little bearing on how enjoyable a car is to drive on a country road or mountain pass.
party973@reddit
Ah yes a slow car fast enjoyer
big_cock_lach@reddit
Porsche for the most part doesn’t chase performance, and their more popular models aren’t the ones that do. Only the Turbo S and GT3 RS in their current lineup chase performance figures, and yeah you get people fawning over them, but the driver focused cars like GTS and non-RS GT3s are the ones that get more attention from a lot of their customers though.
visceralintricacy@reddit
Exactly. 500kph is at this point a dick measuring contest.
We don't need faster cars any more, we need funner cars.
FledglingNonCon@reddit
But then how do you justify $200k+ prices? These cars mostly aren't about driving or fun, they are status symbols. They need some kind of unnecessary technical specs to justify the price. Doesn't matter that no one will take advantage of those things. Like a Rolex. A timex will keep time just as well, but a Rolex tells people "I have rolex money".
BrunoEye@reddit
I feel like a lot of automotive journalism has just gotten stuck in its ways. In the 90s the 0-60 and top speed of many cars was poor enough that improving on them was actually impressive and possible to make use of on the road.
economicAtomBomb@reddit
Yeah I remember when the r35 first released and it was getting 3 second something 0-60s thinking the 0-60 race was about 'over', why care about going any faster than that outside of a drag strip.
schmeckmaster2000@reddit
"Fast cars suck!" - r/cars
BrunoEye@reddit
Where do you plan on driving 300 MPH in a road car?
schmeckmaster2000@reddit
Out of curiosity, what is the cutoff for you? Is it okay if someone wants a 250 MPH car? How about a 200 MPH car? Is that okay with you?
Kagenlim@reddit
Because people want quick cars or cars that are fast in the corners
mehdotdotdotdot@reddit
For fun cars it’s better to be light, and small, then driving to the shops is fun. Having these huge heavy cars makes no sense like you said as you need to go fast for it to be fun. At this stage a Tesla model 3 is far far lighter than
nadhari12@reddit
I want a yangwang that's a dope name for a super car.
ALOIsFasterThanYou@reddit
Regrettably, if their plans for Australia are any indication, BYD seems to have decided that any Yangwang cars they sell overseas will be under their Denza brand.
Which is a logical decision, to be fair. But it would’ve been interesting to see an unabashedly Chinese luxury brand instead of something more generic like Denza.
ryencool@reddit
They need to make a model called the CRE
Then we can call it the Credenza!
Bobo3076@reddit
Is there some law I’m not aware of that makes it so every electric car has to look absolutely disgusting? Why can’t they ever make them look good?
strongmanass@reddit
Lotus Evija
MG Cyberster
Polestar 5
[Porsche Taycan](https://www.topgear.com/sites/default/files/images/cars-road-test/2021/05/665870756d86af7ca5be8c1550753426/dsc08550.jpg?w=1280&h=720
Those (and plenty of others) are not disgusting.
Snoo_31120@reddit
There's plenty of great looking EVs like the model S, Taycan, ioniq 5, ev6
Kagenlim@reddit
And the EP9 or the Rimac
ResEng68@reddit
There is. Reynold's law. EVs hold much lower energy density. They can't bleed excess energy to sub-optimal aero.
president__not_sure@reddit
looks like this guy.
humidhotdog@reddit
I don’t hate how it looks but can we stop with the fake engine sounds
miaomiaomiaomiaomeow@reddit
Ev or not is not the problem here, as an ev doesn't have to be ugly to be an ev. It's that it just looks ugly, odd, and it's not the same type of car as it once was. The new amg gt already is controversial since it departed for the type of car the old amg gt was, this one also look bad. And to think i thought merc had the best looking cars up until 2 years ago 💀
dsonger20@reddit
The Chinese market probably.
They also probably didn't want to spend the money to develop a high performance engine that meets EU emissions requiirements for what is inevitably a lower production vehicle.
miaomiaomiaomiaomeow@reddit
The ev4 hatch is okay, but the sedan is horrible lmao, the proportions feel so off.
This one looks horrible. I used to love the amg gt, it looked incredible, then the new one came out and the rear is uglier, and this one is bad all around. It's also a mix between an sl and a og amg gt, which i don't get. It you already have the sl as the flagship touring coupe, why bringing the amg gt into the mix. I don't like their new design language as a whole, front light bars that look weird, tri star and circle design that doesn't fit anywhere, black stripes between the taillights. They had another legendary run from like 2013 to 2023, then they wanted to reinvent everything with the switch to evs and their models, as good as they are, look bad. Maybe it'll be a bmw pig nose situation and many people will eventually like the design, but so far only the v class, or however it's called, looks interesting
DanGleeballs@reddit
This is the first AMG I’ve liked actually. It would be a great upgrade from my Panamera. Have been considering the Taycan but I’m liking this.
ryencool@reddit
I also like it, dont like the handful of people here make you think everyone's hat8ng this thing. I like the flow, its like the taycan, fisker karma, panamera. All cars I really like the looks of. Im not a huge fan of the highlighter color choice though, but that seems to be popular with manufacturers right now. There are two new lime green m3s in our parking complex..
Kagenlim@reddit
I mean it's objectively ugly
somethingesque@reddit
Yeah, some of the cars I thought were ugly, started growing on me over the years. This one is not going to be one of them, it’s straight up a hodge podge of different parts of a pig with lipstick. Self sabotage at this point for the brand
jrileyy229@reddit
The better question is how did this zero effort post get so many upvotes?
Shienvien@reddit
Why not make it an EV? I'd drive an EV over automatic every day of the week. Once the computer is shifting, a lot of the feel of the drive is gone, anyway, so at that point the only advantage is (hopefully) fun noises.
Styling, four doors on a "coupe", mediocre at best range, weight and any other complaints are more reasonable.
DaBanninator@reddit
It's an EV.
Shienvien@reddit
I know; I was commenting to the people who complain about it being an EV. Why shouldn't it be?
Kagenlim@reddit
Because Black wing
DaBanninator@reddit
You tell me. It's an EV
K_R_A_K_E_N_540@reddit
The electric part is not the problem here lol
LongjumpingLock5875@reddit
I think it is a big part of it.
People seem to not be super keen on EV Sports cars.
A big V8 just adds so much to the car.
ryencool@reddit
This is your opinion. Im a car guy, grew up wrenching on rx7s, 240sxs, civic etc...in the 90s. I love cars to death, regardless of what gets them from A to B, a car is a car. Our EV has saved us almost 10k the last 3 years, but we do have a rather unique car situation..
We will def be upgrading to a Taycan, or whatever competitors there may be in the next 2-3 years. I'd l9ve to have one just for pure ease of use and maintenance, then have a project ICE car of some sort, then we have the best of both worlds.
As much as I love tinkering, im 43. Our commuter EV has given us exactly 0 stress over the last 3 years. I get in, it work. Ive added wiper fluid to the tank, air to the tires. Thats it. I dont worry about oil changes, or belts being replaced, or any of that. It just goes....between car note, insurance, and charging it costs us less than 600$/month, sp 300$ ea to have a nice, fast, comfy, self driving if needed car.
throw_me_away3478@reddit
Same here, my Etron has spent 0 time sitting in the driveway, leaking oil while I wait for parts or time to install them
PastPalpitationCry@reddit
In that case why not buy a more practical EV that you can use for everyday stuff and is much more flexible than this shit.
It's not like anyone is taking this on a track.
happyevil@reddit
Not a huge fan of the fake grill, headlights are a little too busy, but otherwise I think it looks fine. Ironically I think the headlights would look better without the grill.
Better than the EQ cars for sure.
Not sure why everyone's freaking out. It's a departure for Mercedes I guess but it's not that weird if a look in general.
On top of that solid range, big EV power, seems good. I doubt I can afford one but it looks good lol
FuckSpezzzzzzzzzzzzz@reddit
Sadly this is the future for all EU cars. Either hybrid or full on EV. The EU is pushing the new 7 standard on all new manufactured cars and most big engines we have available right now aren't compiling with the new regulations.
MNAAAAA@reddit
I have a feeling US users are feeling what 30-somethings start to feel when they don't recognize most popular music anymore (and it diverges from their taste) - you're not the primary market anymore. This is designed for China.
purz@reddit
Mercedes wasn’t happy with just killing their AMG line they’re determined to bury it deep within the core of the earth.

I would prefer a TT V8 in a performance car.
5tudent_Loans@reddit
Those taillights are rage bait right
ttman05@reddit
It’s ugly but I think it’s mostly due to the color. If it was a darker color, I think it would work better with the taillights.
SomeJayForToday@reddit
I didn't like the round taillights when the AMGT GT XX Concept was released but wow, it looks way worse on the actual production version. The concept actually looks kinda good in comparison.

The question is, how the hell did they manage to go look at the last years XX concept (not bad) during a review behind the closed doors around and be like "you know what guys? let's fuck some shit up, let's go weird-weird".
