Wanting to upgrade my gpu but my brother INSISTS i should build an entirely new pc instead.

I wanna upgrade my 3050 to a 5060 or 5060ti and he says that it would be a bad idea to do a straight upgrade with my parts in my build right now.
The big thing he said was my ram, he said "You need DDR5" which A: my motherboard doesn't support and B: I'm fine on ram I have 32gb of DDR4 vengeance pro
The second thing he said was my cpu would be bottlenecking so bad that I wouldn't notice the jump from a 3050 to a 5060ti. I have an 11th gen i7 which ive been told (by him) is about the best cpu my motherboard can support. most of what i know about my pc was told to me by him but hes telling me to wait until i can just build an entirely new pc to make that big of an upgrade but I kinda think he is crazy but I don't know is he right?
and for the record as of right now im completely not interested in building an entirely new rig I just wanna play 007 First light lowkey

I think if you only upgrade your gpu it should be fine but it also depents what resolution you want to play in in 1080p your cpu might bottleneck your gpu but in 1440p or 4k that shouldnt be a big Problem
You could get more Performance for same price if youd buy an used gpu if you search and get lucky you might find Something in good shape for a good price
You shouldnt get an 5060 with 8gb vram because thats just not enough nowadays for many games and an 5060ti 16gb would cost you ~450€
For the same price you could get an used rtx 4070 which is way faster but only has 12gb vram but that should be enough for most games
Or also for 450€ you could get an rtx 3080 ti which is even faster and has the same vram
Or for 300-350€ you could get an rtx 3080 10gb which is also much faster than a 5060ti 16gb but 10gb vram could be a bit little but its also much cheaper
or you could get an rtx 3080 12gb which would be 350-400€ and has the same Performance than a rtx 3080 10gb
I think all of these cards even tho they have a bit less vram than a 5060ti 16gb are much faster and have a better value
Relative-Wear5509@reddit (OP)
ill definitely look into those options as i am looking to save a little money hence why i didn't wanna build an entirely new rig lol but overall which card would hold up for the longest do you think? a 3080ti or a 4070?
pwnilol300@reddit
Rtx 3080ti has more raw Performance but 4070 uses less watt has more modern frame gen doesnt produce as much heat and will be supported with Updates longer You need to choose whats better for you
But you might also need a new psu for both gpus 850 watt is recommended i wouldnt run it with less 750 watt is Bare minimum A good 850 watt psu should cost 100-150€

Assuming you're on 1080p (and don't play games that max out your VRAM) you'd be fine with a 5060. Some games will be better, some will be worse, but it'll be a big jump.
Probably still better to get a second hand 3070, if only because it'll be cheaper.
9060XT 16gb is still the value pick for the current generation though.
Relative-Wear5509@reddit (OP)
ill definitely look into the 3070 i am looking to save a little money but my main thing is just wanting a card that will hold up over the next couple of years

Anyone who uses the word "bottleneck" without knowing what you are doing with your pc simply doesn't know what they are talking about. The simple fact is that there will always be a bottleneck and to assume it is the ram or the cpu or the gpu is asinine. For me, when working, the bottleneck is often the vram. I don't care because it just means that I can't work as fast. If I'm playing a game and my cpu reduces my potential max fps by 5, I give zero Fs all the time I'm getting over 30fps at 4k.
If your current gpu is reducing your fps below your personal tolerance, then upgrade it. You can always move that gpu into a new build later down the line. Do look at the law of diminishing returns. If you are spending £3000 on a new build that gives you an extra 10fps, you have to ask yourself if those fps are really with £300 each (for you, they may be, it's a personal choice) If you use your pc to make money, it may be worth spending to complete tasks faster and thereby making enough money to recoup the cost but if it is just for playing games, you might find that a new gpu improves your experience without the aggro of a full build.
Relative-Wear5509@reddit (OP)
this one takes it for me ur right that sounds aboslutely insane when you put into 300 per frame hecks no
Additional_Past_7107@reddit
Just make sure it has 16gb vram do future you a favour.
patparks@reddit
Any why exactly does he think that you NEED ddr5 memory?
Relative-Wear5509@reddit (OP)
dude idek

Attempt to play 007 First Light on your current system before making a decision...your 11th Gen I7 is above minimum, and the 3050 is approximately equivalent to the 1660.
Additional_Past_7107@reddit
The minimum specs are for 1080p 30fps
OkSystem455@reddit
Whether it's 5FPS or 50FPS, get the actual stat...then act.
Relative-Wear5509@reddit (OP)
this is true I just noticed that some games my computer is starting to actually struggle to run so i'm just looking for a gpu i won't have to upgrade for the next like 5 years or so
VersaceUpholstery@reddit
11700(f) or 11700k(f)?
It's going to be just behind a 5600(x)/12400f in terms of CPU power, which is fine for a 5060 or 5060ti.
Additional_Past_7107@reddit
But lower than the recommended specs for 1080p 60 for first light
VersaceUpholstery@reddit
Not that far behind, higher than the minimum though. OP will be alright. 11th gen i7s are still alright
Relative-Wear5509@reddit (OP)
I've got a 11700kf sorry for not specifying in the post
t90fan@reddit
Your brother is an idiot
Upgrade your GPU
I run a 4070Ti with a 11700K and 32GB and its great for 4k/60/high in everything ive thrown at it
barney_magru@reddit
Don't listen to nonsense advice around memory especially in current climate. Even 16gb ddr4 at reasonable mhz would be more than fine for right now.
As others have said uograde gpu only for now. You could rven go step back and 30 series and save more money bit still get great performance. In UK (appreciate diff elsewhere) you can get an rtx 3070 or rx 6700xt used for about £180-200 and a 3080 / 6800 xt (closest to a 4070/5070) for £280-310.
Additional_Past_7107@reddit
We are talking about vram. You can easily go and watch reviews of recent games and see newer games are hitting vram levels over 8gb at 1080p which destroys performance as the gpu then uses ram, in forza horizon 6 on a 5060ti 8gb it halves performance from 60 to 30fps vs the 16gb version. This issue is going to affect all 8gb cards and much like 16gb ram newer games are starting to require more and if you don't have enough performance can drop off a cliff.
The real advice is to learn to watch YouTube reviews and skip to the charts that are either the games you play or the multi game averages watch a couple of different reviewers to make sure the results are replicated and that that reviewer hasn't made a mistake in setup.
Taking advice from reddit is the wild west when confirmed testing numbers exist don't just blindly trust what people here say.
Hardware unboxed, gamers nexus, level 1 techs, Daniel Owen and LTT are all fairly reliable and popular but none are infallible. Hardware unboxed tend to have very high output of videos that answer specific comparison questions so I usually start with them and drill down from there.
Some people think 30fps gaming is fine I highly recommend limiting fps to 30 in the games you play and seeing if you think games are enjoyable at that framerate on your system. Find where your comfort limit is for different game types and then apply that to your purchasing requirements.
DZCreeper@reddit
Your brother is giving terrible advice.
An 11th gen i7 is still enough for most games, sitting between an R7 3700X and R7 5700X for gaming performance.
RTX 3050 is slow. Upgrading to a 5060 Ti will be a huge benefit, even if you had a slower CPU.
RAM prices are through the roof. DDR5 being faster for gaming is meaningless when a 20% performance upgrade is $500+.
TokageLife@reddit
For whatever reason it's the people who least understand CPU bottlenecking that obsess about it the most. Given his advice on this stuff I'd really recommend doing your own reading and learning to come to your own conclusions instead of being lazy and using him as a Google replacement.
Additional_Past_7107@reddit
You can buy the gpu and if you are unhappy with the performance upgrade buy a 14600k with a ddr4 motherboard no need to replace the whole PC with ram prices being the way they are.
Additional_Past_7107@reddit
Oh one more thing please buy the 16gb version of the 5060ti the extra money spent now will keep you playing games in 1080p on ultra settings for a lot longer than the 8gb version which is already running out of vram in newer games at 1080p.
Honest-Midnight-1829@reddit
Don't listen to your brother, your current cpu should be fine for a 5060/ti, consider buying a 9060 xt if you don't care about dlss or ray tracing
qef15@reddit
11700(KF) + 32 GB ram is more than fine for a 5060 or 5060 ti.
Diligent_Winter_1841@reddit
Alright in my opinion If you want ray tracing and ur budgets around $650 you can get an RTX 4070 TI SUPER for $650 of Facebook and if you budgets lower a base 4070 is $350 or just the super is $400 the same price as the 4070 ti if u want a 50 series card the 16gb 5060 ti is fine but the best one for $300-$350 is defo the 4070
X3m9X@reddit
The game you are about to play arent cpu intensive anyway, getting the gpu upgrade is better. But you sure you want to upgrade to just a 5060ti? I would save abit more and try to get the 5070 at that point unless you 007 runs like shit on the 3050.
Rare-Break-8547@reddit
your current setup is more than fine for a 5060/5060TI.
