Tenure and technical skills don't automatically translate to management skills. That level 1 SD guy might have focused heavily on people management, business metrics, and stakeholder relationships, which is what upper management actually cares about. If you want to keep focusing on cloud/virtualization engineering, see if they have a technical track (Principal/Staff Engineer) so you don't have to deal with the management hierarchy.

More context would have been great, and I sympathize for you not getting the job. As for the Uni thing, the modern education landscape has changed. My direct Coworkers consist of a tree-planter with a CCIE who taught himself (smartest and has the most manager qualities), a tech lead who started as a cabler and worked his way up (the second smartest) who barely finishing high school. We have several IT graduates who are talented and others who mostly who have decided they are done learning on their own time. I am not saying your formal education is invalid or time wasted, but in IT, its all about skill and soft skills and you gotta put in the time to improve both.

Oh no - I did not want the job. I get paid more with my OT than management will ever earn. and FYI, I finished my masters in February. It just pisses me off that people who start a conversation with "oh I am not technical" are put into positions where they are expected to make technical decisions and then run for cover every time someone askes them to make a decision.
