What are some bands from Wales that I can check out?
Posted by Alternative_Flow_569@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 194 comments
The only band I can think that is from Wales off the top of my head is Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci, and I like there stuff quite a bit, so I am very interested to say what your nation has to offer!
And to quickly add on, yes I know there are other nations in the United Kingdom, I am just asking here because hopefully I can reach more people to cast a wider net of answers.
Outside_Acanthaceae7@reddit
BFMV already mentioned but one that hasn't SKINDRED
hidingbehindyoursofa@reddit
Amazing live band.
MsScaryPoppins@reddit
NEWPORT HELICOPTER!
RockNMelanin@reddit
WAIT FOR IT
ShartTheFirst@reddit
Possibly the best live band I've seen, and I've seen hundreds.
YchYFi@reddit
I've seen them like a hundred times. Back when they would do small gigs in Newport. Nice fellas.
pajamakitten@reddit
Skindred was my first choice too. I always suggest them as a Eurovision entry too, because you know they would get the crowd going.
perpetualmentalist@reddit
Fucking awesome band.
hoochiscrazy_@reddit
Feeder. Their first five albums in particular are all great. Echo Park and Comfort in Sound are classics. I'm always banging the drum that they are very underrated.
bahumat42@reddit
This reminded me to go rewatch the video for "just a day".
DevilRenegade@reddit
They really are underrated. Some great songs that always seem to fly under the radar.
Ironically, the one song of theirs that got the most airplay (Buck Rogers) is in my opinion one of their weakest.
hoochiscrazy_@reddit
I love Buck Rogers as a happy banger but it's definitely nowhere near their best agreed!
BritishGent_mlady@reddit
The Joy Formidable
carlovski99@reddit
I had no idea they were Welsh!
Harry-666666@reddit
They have a few Welsh songs
YchYFi@reddit
Yes North Wales. I mean the band members names give them away. They talk a lot of Welsh at their shows if you go.
carlovski99@reddit
Ah yeah, from Mold. Not actually seen them live, only really listened to a few songs but I do like them. I'll check them out some more.
LiliWenFach@reddit
They walked into the Italian restraint on the Wrexham road while we were having our staff Christmas party one year. Cue a whole table prextending nonchalantly not to have noticed them.
See quite a few celebs out in Mold!
carlovski99@reddit
I always find Mold memorable for the huge difference in the welsh vs english name on the road signs. Wrexham/Wrecsam - yeah, makes sense. Mold/Yr Wyddgrug ?
Not been up that way for years though, sister used to live in Chirk then Summerhill. Plus family trips to Llandudno as a kid. Need to do a North Wales trip - often up in Shropshire so not much further.
hidingbehindyoursofa@reddit
No mention of the GLC? Goldie Looking Chain's music is great and their lyrics are really clever and have literally loads of local references. Check out Fear Of A Welsh Planet and go from there. You knows it.
Harry-666666@reddit
You knows it, clart.
thillyworne@reddit
Don’t forget their seminal classic ‘Parking in Cwmbran’
fickle_north@reddit
‘Wellend’ was one of the best things to come out of that bizarre sea shanty phase during Covid
wolster2002@reddit
My favourite lyrics are from Self Suicide, ‘Jesus Christ, nailed to some wood, 2000 years later, book sales still good’.
fuggerdug@reddit
Wanking with a bag on your head tied to door, that bloke from INXS he knew the score.
GabberZZ@reddit
Soap bar!
SleepAllllDay@reddit
It comes from fuckin ‘olland.
foxhill_matt@reddit
Catatonia Super Furry Animals Goldie Lookin Chain Stereophonics Tom Jones Bonnie Tyler Manic Street Preachers Bullet for my valentine Catfish and the bottlemen ... Lostprophets..
PassiveTheme@reddit
Probably just better off leaving them off entirely
BackgroundRub94@reddit
Himself isn't going to be earning any royalties now, so that's a bit unfair on the rest of them. They were pretty unremarkable but have to be worth a mention, even with that horrible legacy.
tunnocksmystery@reddit
Did the band not pull their music from Spotify etc?
disastrousgreyhound@reddit
No, there were screenshots going around showing they had about 20k monthly Spotify listeners just *before* he died. They never pulled the music from streaming and that’s a lot more listeners than I thought they’d be getting.
YchYFi@reddit
He doesn't get the payments since the company the band set up that owned the rights was dissolved not long after he was arrested.
tunnocksmystery@reddit
Ah, I wonder if that’s what I was thinking of then. Thank you.
Draigwyrdd@reddit
Since he's died they're back up to just under 300k monthly listens. I didn't listen to them when he was still alive but I admit over listened to a few of the songs since he died. O really loved them when I was younger so it was a crushing blow when it all happened.
PassiveTheme@reddit
Yeah, but imagine if someone listened to them now and became a huge fan of their music, and then had to admit that they got into the music of Lost Prophets after Ian Watkins was charged. I knew a few people who were big fans before the news, and they stopped listening. It would just be weird for someone to get really into their music now. And I'm sure the rest of the band have made their peace with what happened to their main source of income.
OllieB111@reddit
A girl in my school had the lyrics to a whole Lost Prophets verse tattooed on her forearm. Always wondered what she did when it all came out about Ian Watkins years later.
VolcanicBear@reddit
I generally assume people with blackout tattoos are covering things like this tbh.
Thin_Pin2863@reddit
I was a huge fan of their music growing up. Now I think I've heard a song of theirs maybe 3 times in the past decade.
It's a shame; the music was good quality, but it's very hard to separate the music from the crime.
Classic_Mammoth_9379@reddit
I think you mitigate that by being the person who only started liking them once you knew he was long dead.
pervertsage@reddit
Good point, is it okay to listen to Rolf Harris again now he's dead?
Superb_Copy1644@reddit
Wasn’t earning them in a long time, think his rights were bought/frozen years ago to stop it happening. Same with Glitter if am not mistaken. But still all a bit in poor taste, such a shame as I love 3 of their albums, like adored them, but is a very minor inconvenience in the grand scheme of what happened.
YchYFi@reddit
You missed Feeder.
DoctorRaulDuke@reddit
finally saw them live a couple of years ago, was brilliant.
wheresyourgodnoweh@reddit
If you're going with Tom Jones you may as well add Shirley Bassey.
Gorfuinor@reddit
Neck Deep
BaianaBoss@reddit
You said bands but I’m going to throw something slightly different out there…
Underworld are an electronic duo from Wales who have created some of the most iconic tracks in history. Their song Born Slippy was a huge hit in the 90s. I saw them last year and their show was absolutely incredible.
DevilRenegade@reddit
I literally had no idea they were from Cardiff.
BurnAfterReading75@reddit
Ditto - I was around in the 90s and I had no idea they were Welsh...
Porkus-Pius@reddit
Super Furry Animals.
Wretched_Colin@reddit
I’m going to see them tomorrow in Brixton and cant wait.
Their recent setlists are amazing.
IckyQualms@reddit
I'm off to see 'em tonight in Manchester. Very excited!
BurnAfterReading75@reddit
Have fun x2. Jealous - I saw SFA at Leeds Festival (2000 so touring Guerilla plus lots of Radiator and Fuzzy Logic) and it's still one of my favourite festival gigs ever...
Brrrofski@reddit
If you want an older band - Budgie.
Early hard rock/metal band from the 70s/80s that were hugely influencal but unfortunately go well under the radar.
Lots of big band cite them as influences.
Metallica have recorded two covers of their songs.
jimmyj16@reddit
Tom Jenkins
HotPotatoWithCheese@reddit
The Cool Cymru bands of the 90s. Manic Street Preachers and Catatonia are my favourites.
farfetchedfrank@reddit
Y Niwl are an instrumental surf rock band
Minute_Ad_3719@reddit
lostprophets
spicyherb_@reddit
Yr Anhrefn if you like punk
Otherwise_Living_158@reddit
Super Furry Animals’ back catalogue, and Gruff Rhys’ solo work, is some of the best music to ever come from these isles IMHO.
Richard James and Euros Childs from Gorky’s have got significant solo work, particularly Euros.
If you like Gorky’s then you will probably like a relatively new band called Tai Haf Heb Drigolyn and their first album “Ein Albwm Cyntaf Ni”. They’re brilliant.
SpeedwellWeedwell@reddit
The big club.
RealMover@reddit
Not a current band, but 60ft Dolls are probably my all time favourite.
biggs3108@reddit
Not a band but ... Kelly Lee Owens has released some great electronic music, particularly the albums Inner Song and LP8
Objective_Living_825@reddit
I would think of Manic Street Preachers as the definitive Welsh band. They're pretty bland these days but their early 90s run from Generation Terrorists - Everything Must Go still holds up fantastically
biggs3108@reddit
Strange to leave out This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours when that is clearly their 'most Welsh' album
Foxtrot-13@reddit
I'm surprised the Manics have less mentions than Stereophonics. The Holy Bible is one of the truly great 90's albums (even if dark) and Every Thing Must Go is nearly as good.
Thrwawayawayawaylala@reddit
Feverjaw, Hark A Shark, Positive Reaction, Thronk, Spwci, Mark Watkins Music, Love on Loan, Pizza Tramp, Brightr, Acts of Gross Indecency, Fate of the Sun, Pay the Man
NiceHouseGoodTea@reddit
The Dirty Youth are a great rock band
DevilRenegade@reddit
Manic Street Preachers Funeral for a Friend Bullet for my Valentine Feeder
Lenzo357@reddit
Race horses, most of their songs are in Welsh but the final album was recorded in English if you want to understand the lyrics.
Jamie2556@reddit
Is that meilyr Jones? I loved that solo album he did a few years ago if so.
Lenzo357@reddit
Yeah it is!
UraniumMermaid@reddit
Young Marble Giants
her_pheonix@reddit
Still love listening to the "Final Day" e.p. 👌
Kadoomed@reddit
Tom Jones
rybnickifull@reddit
Super Furry Animals, Tystion (Welsh rap, one of whom was once in Gorky's), Anweledig, Y Cyrff, Anweledig, Mim Twm Llai, Melys, Topper (the drummer of whom ended up in Gorky's), Datblygu, Fflaps, Ectogram, Geraint Jarman, Catatonia, Ffa Coffi Pawb, Llwybr Llaethog, Nâr. Think that's a decent start, there are many more.
Kadoomed@reddit
Super Furry Animals is essential listening for everyone really. Radiator is possibly a 10/10 album.
SFAOK
Fingers_9@reddit
I would add Race Horses to this list as well. Particularly the album Goodbye Falkenburg
Eoin_McLove@reddit
I’d add Breichiau Hir as well.
Fingers_9@reddit
A new one for me, i'll give them a trio.
leighsus@reddit
OP, a lot of people are just naming artists from Wales, but if you like Gorky's this post is all the bands who were around and making music that Gorky's would have been aware of at the time they were starting out.
Alarmed-Cod-7606@reddit
Budgie
ElvishMystical@reddit
Catatonia
luffyuk@reddit
The Big Push

not Welsh. Although Ren Gill is, who is part of the band, but Ren deserves to be oh here for his solo stuff
thickgenius@reddit
Lostproph... nvm.
cloggypop@reddit
Super Furry Animals
Princ3Ch4rming@reddit
Considering Ian Watkins got what he deserved, I feel like Lostprophets is… less bad now.
Arsewhistle@reddit
There was a band called Lost Prophets who were really big a few years back. I wonder what happened to them
Foddley@reddit
I did like them. Real shame. The guy got what was coming to him though eh?
geese_moe_howard@reddit
Budgie from Cardiff. 60s proto-metal.
Dissidant@reddit

Funeral for a Friend. Mclusky. Hondo Maclean.
aggravatedyeti@reddit
Also Jarcrew (mclusky adjacent?
zer0c00l81@reddit
absolutely loved Jarcrew!!!
Flatcapspaintandglue@reddit
And Future Of The Left, Falco’s other band.
But really this list should just be various Mclusky song titles, nothing else matters
M-e-g-g-y@reddit
There's Christian Fitness too which is Falcos solo project.
Flatcapspaintandglue@reddit
Thanks for introducing me to this :)
james9483@reddit
Hondo Maclean!! I still have them on my playlists. Let’s rodeo!!
AnnoyedHaddock@reddit
Hecate enthroned
Rude-Possibility4682@reddit
The Alarm, I'm shocked that I'm adding this so far down the list.
MattKmusic@reddit
I've been scrolling looking for The Alarm or Mike Peters
LiliWenFach@reddit
Chroma, Sterephonics, Fleur de Lys, Dystopian Sun, Bullet for my Valentine, Manics are all personal favourites.
desertcanyons@reddit
Funeral for a Friend.
Casually Dressed and Deep in Conversation will always be one of my favourite ever albums
RiversOfAwesome@reddit
Hours for me, seeing them play it in full at Cardiff Castle for the 20th anniversary was incredible
desertcanyons@reddit
That's sick. Hours is right behind CDADIC for me!
Floki_TheTrickster@reddit
Hiraeth - Black Metal
Also lovely folks!
Traditional_Bee2164@reddit
Stereophonics, manic street preachers, catatonia, left hand right hand, Ratatosk, MC Mabon, Super Furry Animals, Goldie Lookin chain...to name but a few

Holding Absence did a great set at Download a couple of years ago. Their singer filled in for Funeral For A Friend as well for a bit I think.
YchYFi@reddit
Lucas is on a lot of songs with other metal groups. Alpha Wolf I think.
aguasingas@reddit
Los Campesinos
Fingers_9@reddit
I don't think they are actually Welsh, they just formed in Wales. Tbat being said, they are brilliant, and keep getting better.
ScumBucket33@reddit
Skindred are perpetually touring.
YchYFi@reddit
Hopefully they jazzed it up their set. Managed to catch the same set both times two years ago.
BrewDogDrinker@reddit
Super Furry Animals.
Manic Street Preachers.
Stereophonics.
OllieB111@reddit
Holding Absence are worth a mention.
YchYFi@reddit
Yes I knew I forgot them. Love these guys. Like many Welsh bands they have recorded with producer Dan Weller of Sikth.

Seconding this. Phenomenal band and Lucas (the vocalist) is outrageously talented.

Chez Kane, if you're into 80s influenced melodic rock.
