For the record I’m very new to cooking.
Bhedge420@reddit
Looks great despite the blood on the plate.. Lol
Shot_Revolution8828@reddit
Obligatory, it's not blood comment.
Bhedge420@reddit
Yeah yeah the myoglobin and water comment. But it will never leave my mind that it's blood.. Haha
Shot_Revolution8828@reddit
I hate myself because we all know what we are talking about. Isn't that the point of language? Is it an idiom or a colloquial phrase.
Bhedge420@reddit
Now I'm confused.. Haha. Why you hate yourself? Because you stated the obvious. I know what it is. Should I hate myself because I stated a wrong statement? Genuinely confused here.
Shot_Revolution8828@reddit
For making an obvious joke. I can be more creative.
Next-Drink8593@reddit
Omg… I was gunna add that into my comment, hahaha
GrapeEconomy5192@reddit (OP)
Yeah that’s fair
TyrHawk97@reddit
For being new and your first try it's not bad at all, you only have to keep practice until you master it, I would totally give a try to your burguer and fries
Raneynickel4@reddit
The only failure here is the portion size! Otherwise it actually looks good.
graupeltuls@reddit
Honestly, it looks decent.
GrapeEconomy5192@reddit (OP)
I even tried to make potato buns from scratch lmao
Syrric_UDL@reddit
The key to fries is soak them in water and vinegar for 20 mins or longer. Then fry them once and let them sit and them fry them a second time at a higher temp
Artistic-Use-2481@reddit
This is legit. I don't do the soak and still get darn good results, my favorite compliment has always been "how do you get your fries so good?!?" Lol. But the soak helps get rid of excess starches that can mess with the cooking process and the vinegar stops the potatoes from deteriorating. I'm sure you know I'm just further explaining the why.
Syrric_UDL@reddit
Yeah you can cut a bunch at once and leave them in there and cook small batches over the course of a week or so.
Artistic-Use-2481@reddit
That's awesome, the potatoe won't absorb any of the vinegar over a week eh? Maybe I'll try it. Coukd make prep for fries quick and easy.
Syrric_UDL@reddit
Not that I’ve noticed, when I was in my 20s living with roommates we’d prep a whole bucket of them for the last week
dieek@reddit
Ngl, they look like biscuits
Artistic-Use-2481@reddit
Did you mix mashed potatoes with flower for you buns? That's how I used to make potatoe dough, I used for making shepards pie hand pockets.
GrapeEconomy5192@reddit (OP)
Yes! Self rising flour since it was all I had on hand.
Artistic-Use-2481@reddit
I respect you and your effort. You're gonna be making such good food within the next couple years! It's all up hill from here and your start is better then alot of people's. Be proud!
Artistic-Use-2481@reddit
Good job! The buns look legit!
peacenchemicals@reddit
hell yeah. i’m a decent home cook but i would never attempt to make potato buns. nothing but respect
134824@reddit
Pretty good for a first try, especially considering you even made your own bun!
Keep at it and they will become great! Figuring out new recipes and techniques and perfecting them is a lot of fun.
logical_thot@reddit
It’s the bloodstain for me
Fine-Upstairs-6284@reddit
Why failed? Looks good to me
GrapeEconomy5192@reddit (OP)
I showed a friend and they absolutely thrashed my food but jokingly, still made me feel bad sorta.
ezirb7@reddit
How did it taste? Home cooking starts with getting the taste right. Worry about the aesthetics after, or worry about them never.
GrapeEconomy5192@reddit (OP)
Wasn’t too bad although the fries could’ve been more crispy the buns turned out okay they were more like a soft biscuit than a hamburger bun.
Shot_Revolution8828@reddit
Looks fine to me and I've worked fine dining. I don't care about how it looks. Did it taste good? As someone else said you have to double fry the fries and at my place we freeze them after the first fry. It helps expel some of the water so you get crispier fries. Fun fact, frying fries doesn't really fry the insides because all the moisture turns to steam that pushes the oil away. That's why it's important to maintain a high cooking temp otherwise they get soggy from the oil being absorbed instead of pushed away.
siraliases@reddit
Yeah cuz they aint shit
Misery loves company, and jealous people like to try to tear down happy people
Fine-Upstairs-6284@reddit
Id rather eat what’s pictured than any fast food chain
GrapeEconomy5192@reddit (OP)
Really!? Thanks! 😊
TrainAffectionate212@reddit
I'd eat it man. If you are that self conscious about it you can fry the French fries twice. It will crisp them up very nice. Only thing is make sure you dry them on a paper towel or something before drying them again. That being said though, it honestly looks good the way it is
Artistic-Use-2481@reddit
The burger looks decent, your fries need some work but we all start somewhere. Look up "French fry double dip" Basically heat your oil, dip the fries until slightly cooked (starting to get limp and starting to crisp just a little) then take out and shake the basket get as much grease off the fries as you can with the shake, reheat the oil and dip back in for a golden fry with a perfect fluffy inside. I think 375 to 400. For the first dip you do. You can do it with a cheap set up too, frying in a pot or pan. Just use a skimmer or ladle with holes to take the fries out.
NOTTedMosby@reddit
Not even bad, besides the fact that your fries look like you cut up one potato and pan seared it
yallmight2020@reddit
Looks great - keep at it!
ViciousCombover@reddit
Bro, I see a burger and fries.
Nice work, keep at it.
CrimsonOOmpa@reddit
You didn't fail!! You did better than most of the people on here could probably do!! Just throw your favorite condom mint on that betch and ENJOY!!! Keep cooking! You can only get better with experience!!
Next-Drink8593@reddit
Awww this isn’t shitty. I only eat homemade burgers (friends and family too) so I would totally eat that.
tiredoldwizard@reddit
Is it edible? Because that’s not bad. Im a chef I’ve seen worse from people at my job on their first day who claim to be experienced
pondturtle5@reddit
Nah that looks fine
mrwioo@reddit
Would
auhnold@reddit
Looks good to me! I like to leave the fries in until they are well done but these aren’t bad.
BitGamerX@reddit
Looksgood!
lukeswalton@reddit
Your presentation needs work, but I’d smash that. I usually like mine with lettuce and tomato as well, but I bet this was really good! A homemade bun is way more ambitious than I usually am although one time I did make sesame seed buns from scratch.
GrapeEconomy5192@reddit (OP)
Ahhh man I forgot tomato and friggin damn LETTUCE! 🤦♂️
OldDirtyBarrios@reddit
I don’t see much of anything wrong here
Lexail@reddit
Looks fine
Party_Building1898@reddit
That's a burger and those are home fries keep cooking you'll taste a change also if you want you could look at how cooks plate food Good job tho.
fleshweasel@reddit
Seen much worse
