What to do in regards to bailiffs?

Just to preface: I'm not in debt (yet).
I was watching a BBC film called Killed by My Debt which depicts the unfortunate story of Jerome Rogers, a young man who was hounded by bailiffs and who ultimately saw no choice but to end his life.
I'm a young person and this scenario terrifies me, especially because I know I'm susceptible due to not being the most astute or assertive person. The thing is, he searched for help - debt clearance and whatnot. To all the more experienced folks out there, aside from the obvious (don't get into debt you can't manage), what can be done if this happens?

Tell you a story I had a debt company collect a debt for me and when I asked for more information and updates I was ignored. So I sent them an official letter that they are keeping thier end of the bargain, the boss then phone me up and was rude and swore at me. I downloaded a call recorder. Sent another letter knowing he bite to it, he threatened me that he would send the lads round, called me disabled and a c**t. So then took him to a small claims court. After non show for silly excuses like he injured himself etc, his so called legal team called me. When I explained to him I've got him recorded on the phone and due to this behaviour we could no longer have a working relationship, they offered me a full refund lol, ive got the recording still now. The system is a sham. Know your rights its a civil matter not a criminal one. Police aren't Interested but the bailifs can not bully you although they will try.
