The current scientific identifier for this newly discovered organism is Chimaera sp. 1, and it remains officially designated under the data registry code OC-SP-0002532 on the Ocean Census NOVA discovery platform.
Some interesting things have been found about this new species, such as its mitochondrial ND2 gene sequences are highly divergent from its closest regional relative, the Dusky Chimaera (Chimaera obscura) found in eastern Australia, and Chimaera sp. 1 grows "significantly larger" than its Chimaera obscura cousins, It also features a uniquely dark, deep-water coloration paired with an exceptionally prominent defensive spine resting directly above its anterior dorsal fin.
