Hormuz closure could trigger 'agrifood shock', price crisis within a year, FAO warns

Submission Statement: Despite the veneer of normalcy being provided by a rapid drawdown of strategic petroleum reserves in the OECD, the UN FAO is not mincing words about what is coming:
- The closure of the Strait of Hormuz is the beginning of a "systemic agrifood shock" that could trigger a severe global food price crisis within six to 12 months, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization said on Wednesday.
- The disruption is not a temporary shipping problem, the agency said, warning "the window for preventive action is closing quickly".
- FAO also warned the crisis could deepen with the onset of El Niño weather phenomenon, expected to bring droughts and disrupt rainfall patterns across several regions.
It is extremely tempting to be lulled into the illusion that nothing meaningful has changed, due to a lack of meaningful impacts on the ground in developed nations - however the shock absorption properties of strategic reserves are rapidly running out and will be hitting critical levels by August. All signs currently point to 2027 experiencing a worldwide food crisis unprecedented in modern history.

Bro I am freaking the fuck out about this. Dumb people are going to get batty once food prices get high enough. I don't expect the general population of the US to react to an impossible cost of living in any constructive manner.
I just really wish us poors would stop arguing amongst ourselves and unite against the rich.
deSuspect@reddit
What do you mean "constructive manner". Normal, legal way clearly have no impact on ruling class considering how the world is now, there are two options left. Lay down and accept our faith as good little slaves or stand up and revolt.

Sure, but like, elites that have no intrest in helping you are wayy different than elites that want to actively fuck you with a chainsaw

Can you plant a garden? Containers on a balcony or even something at a friends/family members. Plant lots of beans, squash, corn, potatoes, etc. Learn to identify wild edibles in your area. Start any way you can and do it yesterday.
lowrads@reddit
The difficulty threshold of production is high, the logistics are far more tenuous than you might imagine. All producers get tripped up by pathogen populations, soil conditions, handling and meteorology. The main difference between professional and amateurs is that the former have an understanding of the mechanics of those manifold breakdowns.
Yes, anyone can manage a mint in a pot, or even onions if they somehow have the land, the time and expendable knees. Realistically though, the difficulty of food security between harvests has older and more practical solutions. The symbols of resiliency in most of the world's kitchens are the humble pickling pots.
It goes by different words, but it's all the same process. In Korea, it's đồ chua, in Japan, it's tsukemono, in Iran, it's torshi. Vegetables soaked in acetic acid, vinegar, are preserved in bulk in times of abundance against oxidation and microbial breakdown. It's not a perfect process, as vegetables need to be clean, and you need a good starting batch of fermentation microbes, but people have been working on the process for a long time, and developing acquired tastes for longer.

Thank you - it is all coalescing at once seemingly. I’m also freaking out - but it appears we are in the minority

Yeah hungry people are not safe to be around. Shit is gonna get so bad it’s crazy. I have been prepping since this war started but even then there is only so much I can do when faced with famine.

I was talking to my counselor today and was mentioning this type of reality in the future. Not as detailed as you just did, but said some bad stuff was coming. And she just kind of laughed and said that I'm just blowing things out of proportion. These people are going to starve when the bad times hit. I guess I need to restock my food supply in my pantry. Get some more water and other things. Thanks for posting this. It kind of gets me ready to go to start prepping again, I don't do anything crazy, I just like to have water and canned food and some dry stuff. I've eaten through a lot of my stock, so it's time to put more in.
CalligrapherSharp@reddit
Nothing crazy about having a few months worth of canned and dried food stored, and like you, I make sure to eat and replace as it gets old. I am grateful to live in the Midwest US where there is plenty of (polluted) fresh water, so I just stock up on filters.
aalitheaa@reddit
Which type of filters do you stock up on?
CalligrapherSharp@reddit
Lifestraw, because it filters PFAS.
OatSoyLaMilk@reddit
Is your counselor MAGA? Because otherwise I can't imagine finding this laughably unlikely.

And now the rest of us are laughing... at you! :)

Willful ignorance, unfortunately, is not restricted based on political ideology. Some of the most cope-pilled and eager to reject acknowledging that this war was permanently and fundamentally changed a large number of global systems for the negative are comfortable western "leftists".

Yep, most people’s fragile minds can’t handle the truth about how fucked we are and that everything will be changing.
everything-grows@reddit
Mine is super liberal and tells me that historically we've weathered bad things as a species and this will be the same. I don't bring it up anymore because how can you talk to someone who just doesn't get it?
stasi_a@reddit
Same way we’ve “weathered” the black plague too
Magnesium4YourHead@reddit
Sounds about right. No one is immune.
Ok-Zookeepergame5245@reddit
Exactly. I try and talk about this with my friends but they don’t get it so I hardly see them anymore. I just can’t be asked to be around people who can’t accept how fucked we are and would rather bury their heads in the sand.
Aint2Proud2Meg@reddit
I work with 40+ leftist mental health professionals and we just discussed in our staff meeting how some sources were recommending we aim to get to close to a month of food on hand (unrelated reasons).
I was the only one in the room that didn’t instantly react like that was bonkers. I looked around for one person who might be in my wavelength, and it didn’t happen.
These guys make really good money and live in large, spacious homes. Most have no kids.

As a therapist, I would have looked at you, and we would have done the nod of acknowledgement. You are not alone. 🫡
Davo300zx@reddit
Nope, liberal. Thinks everything is normal. Every week, I still protest by bringing up the latest bit of collapse news.
DownWithCollege@reddit
I wonder if they secretly agree with you but don’t know what else to say? I don’t think they think they’re supposed to agree with or encourage “thoughts like that” which ironically - that line of thinking put us in this position to begin with. I think a lot of people know how fucked things are it’s just so overwhelming they don’t know what to do or can’t express their genuine feelings because that would make it more real.
WintersChild79@reddit
That's exactly what the issue is. Most talk therapists are primarily trained in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, which has a base assumption that most of the client's distress is coming from distorted thinking which needs to be reframed. If you're worried about something real, then it throws a monkey wrench into the works.
pazpamparacuatro@reddit
I’m sure arguing with your therapist every week is a productive use of everyone’s time.

Wild coincidence but I had the exact same conversation with my counselor last week and she also minimised it. I wanted to talk about the sheer existential dread and how to live with it, not deny it entirely, but there was just a cognitive wall up for her. She's been my counselor for 7 years and this was the first time it really felt disconnected.
Physical_Ad5702@reddit
Your counselors number one priority is to make sure you’re healthy enough to keep showing up to work.
Most could give a fuck after that.
gothahontas@reddit
I’m a therapist and am actively encouraging my clients to go to farmers market now as a routine to get affordable fresh produce. You’re not wrong.

Also look around and get one or two extra of your special treats. Think of it as a glidepath to help yourself adjust to a "new normal" where it isn't made any longer.

I got 25 lb bag of dried pintos for about $15 a few weeks ago. Not a bad price. I'm thinking about grabbing 3 more, plus a few 25lb bags of rice. Even though I eat beans and rice almost every day, a 25lb bag lasts for many months. The thing that I worry about more than eating enough is the power situation. It doesn't do much good to have a bunch of dry goods if the power goes out or gets too expensive to pay the bill and your only cooking methods involve electricity or gas that is expensive and in short supply. I guess you could soak your dry goods long enough to masticate them, but it would certainly not be enjoyable.

Propane camp stove/small bbq and a good supply of propane tanks
EchoGecko795@reddit
I got a small propane camping stove for cooking. propane last forever but the containers are only good for 10-12 years, which they need to be inspected for leaks.

Hello, old friend.
Here's the UN FAO press release (hyperlinked), followed up by some of their recent data (beginning of the month).

Great addition, cheers mate. Vegetable oils already going through the roof pre-Hormuz is interesting, wonder what is driving that one.
DissedFunction@reddit
when we talk about systemic food shock...we're talking about 3rd world countries and poor first.
when Musk/doge axed US Aid programs, that signaled what level of interest the elites have in protecting poor people from famine and/or disease.
the 2nd level will be poor and those on the margins in 2nd and 1st world countries. we can already see the trump admin playing games with medicare/medicaid/ebt assistance in "blue" states b/c of alleged fraud (this despite the fact trump has pardoned a number of CONVICted fraudsters). so when systemic food shock hits the USA, it will impact elderly and working poor first. (lots of elderly food programs have been cut as well). Food bank assistance has been cut too.
third level will be middle class in modern countries. middle class people are less likely to riot or revolt or even express massive political pressure and recent elections suggest many middle class people can be influenced by massive PR/propaganda campaigns funded by dark $ (oligarchs interests)
so, given this, besides prepping and having a victory garden I don't have great ideas on how you transform a nation like the USA who is asleep at the wheel and more focused on sports or reality tv shows.
