Noise complaints to the council - do they actually get sorted?

Moved into my house about a year ago and I can’t do it anymore. This cockerel never shuts up. From dawn until dusk it’s crowing loudly. We can’t have the windows open. My partner and I both work from home, with me being on client calls all the time. It’s affecting our work. I’ve submitted a noise complaint but does anyone have experience getting this actually sorted out?

Well duh, but it's not people doing this intentionally. It's nature. I'm literally asking what would you expect them to do with a bird? Tape its beak shut? Move it somewhere it'll continue to make the noise? I'd honestly predict they've got some sort of policy that makes natural animal sounds excempt. It would be different if it was a noisy distressed dog chained to a tree in the garden.

Chicken owners have to register their birds and cockerels are very rarely permitted in residential areas (due to the noise). It’s likely they have the bird against council regulations which means they can be instructed to rehome it.

I feel your pain, but it is part of living in the countryside and village life. I have a new neighbour who has one as well right next door and they also have 4 peacocks, 7 geese, about 20 chickens and 6 guinea fowl who are really noisy and it's annoying at times, but I would rather that then music blasting until the early hours of the morning. Invest in some good earplugs and they really do help.

How does a cockerel crowing effect your work? I can see why it crowing and waking you up would be annoying but during the day I don't see how it would cause a problem?

I have client calls 4 hours a day and this cockerel is basically in my back garden. It’s super noisy

Sure... But I fail to see how hearing a cockerel crowing affects your work? What is it preventing you from doing?

Because I’m sleep deprived from getting woken up by this bird, and I’m frustrated because of the constant noise.

Well, the best thing to do in the first instance would be to speak to the neighbour and ask them if they can move the coup further away from your house. If that's not possible then I don't really know what you expect them (or anyone else) to be able to do about it?

'Apologies if you hear any background noise, a cockrel has taken up residence in my garden' Client work can include some divas but I struggle to see how this is a problem unless your work is that you do voice acting and are supposed to have a sound studio

Yeah it’s also incredibly annoying for me, who has to listen to a cockerel crowing for 12 hours a day.

the voice isolation function on Teams is really good as well, I’ve had some crazy background sounds going on and my colleagues have never heard a peep!

Environmental Health will probably send someone out there was a lot of complaints about a cockerel round here and the owners hadn’t registered it or the 3 hens. A week later and never heard it crowing again

I hope so. I know there is stuff you can do to reduce the crowing but the owner just doesn’t care about it :/ I’d have no issue with them having the bird if it was just like 70% quieter

She was not receptive unfortunately :( I have no issue with people keeping chickens in general, I actually think it’s really nice. But when I get woken up at 5:30am by your chicken, and have to listen to it until 9pm in the summer, it gets really tiring really quickly.

My parents reported their neighbours over 16 dogs! Barking most of the day. Council environmental health provided recording equipment in my parents house. Wound up with neighbour having an enforcement to reduce the number of dogs. Took a while but sorted in the end

Nope. They will get you to fill out a diary over several months before then giving you equipment to record it. It’s a long old process.
