Is converting this 2009ish Specialized Crosstrail a better investment than buying a new low-mid-end ebike?
I've had this 2009 model since like 2014. I bought it used from someone on Craigslist. I've been trucking it around, barely riding it for years. I was actually thinking about selling it, but then I started to consider whether it would make sense to convert it to an ebike. I'm very handy and have no doubt I can perform the upgrade. I am just trying to figure out if it's worth the $ to do the conversion, or sell this and buy a brand new ebike (that I probably won't ride much, but I like having a bike option in the garage...) I'm not sure I need a lot of power here. I'm mostly looking for a little bit of pedal assist for the hilly areas of my town and to help me extend my range a bit. I mostly want to still be pedaling myself. And if I do decide on the conversion, what considerations do I really need to make here? Do I have to upgrade the brakes to disc brakes? (Can i even do that with this model?) How big of a battery do I need for what I'm trying to get out of it? Is mid-drive the way to go? thanks in advance
