The U.S. Forrest Service cobras be like 'Damn, that's even cooler than I am.'.
chromeman09@reddit
Is there a reason for having a cobra for such a role? I'd understand general aviation or even the Hind as a GA can (spot i believe its called) and the hind can carry stuff, whereas the cobra can't carry much and isn't capable of guiding bigger aircraft with as much ease.
AshleyAshes1984@reddit
The 'Firewatch' Cobras were basically loaded up with sensors and would fly around, collecting data and imagery, and directing operating's on the ground. Less about directly fighting the fire, more about directing and assisting the fire fighting effort.

I don't know man. That thing was beaten severely with an ugly stick. Russia may have built some of the best choppers but they definitely built the ugliest.
NastyHobits@reddit
We definitely made some ugly ones

Truly an awesome piece of machinery, I had the opportunity to set equipment under one of these in the 90's. From the Erickson sky crane foundry. Being less that 50' underneath this beast was a once in a lifetime experience. The coolest thing i thought besides from twin screaming jet engines was there is rear facing cockpit to allow an operator to control the Cable and hook releases.

The Sikorsky Skycrane is an example of pure function and utility over form. It has one mission: pick up large external loads (and occasionally drop them, in the case of aerial firefighting). That helicopter is everything it needs to be and nothing more. And while it may appear ugly to look at it, there's a certain appeal that comes with such a pure design.

Occasionally? Nobody tell them about the time S-64s dropped Daisy Cutters in Vietnam.

It may not be a pretty bird, but it's f'in awesome to watch them work! Got to watch Ericson's Hurricane Bubba run lift towers and crossarms during lift construction in Breckenridge, years ago - damned skilled folks doing that work!
Sad-Onion-2593@reddit
Had one fly over the house after the 2003 Canberra fires. Every on the table just started...moving to the left.

"Do you even lift bro?"
OldStromer@reddit
Right? I've seen one in person. Really odd looking.

I'm still amazed I got a photo of that thing. This was during the Caldor fire in 2021.
Hbgplayer@reddit
I have took a video of one of those flying right over me at the airport I work at during the 2020 LNU Complex fires.

Neat!! You should share that if you haven't already.

that livery is doing a lot of heavy lifting

It's from a Russian film as they didn't have any SeaHawks.

trimflame@reddit
Is this real? If so how did they get one
CardinalRevalation@reddit
Yes, it’s real. They’re Russian movie producers. They probably bought one off their own military. Or just “borrowed” it.
