Kids don't know about stop drop and roll ..... or .... adults were worried we might catch on fire

Does anyone remember “duck and cover” drills? This was maybe ‘78 or ‘79? They march us into the school hallway and we’d crouch onto the floor with our hands over our heads. I guess it was for nuclear war? Seems insane now.
Existing-Hawk5204@reddit
Those were tornado drills where i went. Nuclear fall out drills were get under the desk and cover.
EnvironmentalGift257@reddit
Every school I went to had the fallout shelter sign in them. But yeah in central OK in the eighties we had to do tornado drills and the occasional active tornado warning. We’d have to squat against the wall until your legs couldn’t take it any more and kids would start crying. I still think that was pretty cruel.
ApplicationUpper9229@reddit
Ever see when South Park made fun of that?

ditchdiggergirl@reddit
We didn’t have that. But I do remember some Reagan general telling us that in the event of a nuclear attack warning, we would have about 20 min so we should all immediately get out and start walking. Some of us might get pretty far in 20 minutes.
I’m sure that mile would have made all the difference.
calling_water@reddit
Did they say how to know what direction to walk in?
TheJeff@reddit
We did those in Texas in the 80's, though they were called tornado drills. Honestly a much more realistic threat.
Historical_Bath_9854@reddit
Ours were for storms. But they must have stopped "stop, drop and roll" after us, because they always run in movies 🤣😂🤣😂do they even have officer friendly or the fireman with the cpr dummy come to schools anymore?
NoMayoForReal@reddit
Sad that it’s changed to active shooter drills.
DocWednesday@reddit
We didn’t do duck and cover (at least where and when I was growing up). We did, however, learn not to put anything in our mouths if we didn’t know what it was. Also, creepy robots can play around saws and machinery because they can reattach their arms.
HistoricalTowel1127@reddit
People aren’t as flammable as they were a generation ago.
DocWednesday@reddit
And cigarettes aren’t as prevalent either.
dry_towelette99@reddit
With all the microplastics in our bodies now? I feel like we’d go up faster than those army guys after we got our hands on a magnifying glass.
skwigi@reddit
Close. Clothing isn't as flammable as it used to be.
SarcasticGirl27@reddit
Wrong. Ever try to set a person on fire? It used to be so much easier. Especially if they were naked. /s
skwigi@reddit
lol!!
Unique_Information11@reddit
We did duck and cover drills because we were near a refinery. I guess if that ever went up, we’d be using stop drop and roll too.
Oldebookworm@reddit
Well, our pj’s were pretty flammable in the 70s
Ianthin1@reddit
Every year the local fire dept visits my kids elementary school and they talk about stop drop and roll.
And I've seen enough internet to know that people manage to catch fire more often than I thought.
Silly-Shoulder-6257@reddit
Just playing devils advocate but maybe it’s cuz we do more stupid shit like gender reveals and cooking meth.
fizzelnut@reddit (OP)
talked about it at work no one had a clue
ONROSREPUS@reddit
We actually have training exercises at work once a year. We have a lot of flammable fluids here, so it kind of makes sense.
liddybuckfan@reddit
Grew up in south Florida. We were constantly learning how to stop drop and roll if we caught on fire. Meanwhile, a hurricane would come and we'd put masking tape on the windows and be all like, "meh, it'll be fine."
Silly-Shoulder-6257@reddit
Lmao 🤣 iykyk
kckitty71@reddit
MaximumJones@reddit
If you never accidentally caught on fire did you ever really live?
Silly-Shoulder-6257@reddit
Lmao 🤣
MinusGovernment@reddit
All the videos I see now it's adults that don't know about stop drop and roll, usually after doing stupid shit with fireworks/explosives.
joemamah77@reddit
I want to know where all the razor blades in Halloween apples are???
dry_towelette99@reddit
All those devil worshippers playing records backwards must have stolen them!
Ok-Street7504@reddit
In CA we did duck and cover under our desk for earthquake drills. When one really hit everyone just screamed and a few kids ran out of the room. To her credit our teacher remained cool and calm at her desk directing the people that were left to get under their desk and stop screaming.
eclectic-up-north@reddit
House fire rates are much lower than they used to be.
PumpikAnt58763@reddit
While interest rates are much higher.
Very low instances of becoming a new homeowner who burns to death.
fridayimatwork@reddit
Interest rates are low compared to 70s and 80s
eclectic-up-north@reddit
House prices are crazy high. Interest rates are historically low. They were almost 20% in the early 1980s.
mojdojo@reddit
I mean who hasn't caught on fire at least once in their life?
Also as a woman of a certain age I fear spontaneous human combustion now more than ever.
ONROSREPUS@reddit
I actually caught on fire in school. Welding class and I was wearing flannel. The little fuzzes on the shirt caught on fire and I seen the flame come up and over my shoulder. First time I ever hulk hogened a shirt.
SignificantTransient@reddit
SignificantTransient@reddit
Clothing regulations made the point moot. You won't accidentally go up in polyester smoke if you drop your cigarette now.
zionzednem@reddit
I was more focused on how well my desk was going to protect me from a nuclear attack.
SignificantTransient@reddit
Well.. more to protect you from the roof falling on you. Fallout shelters were a real thing... but the upgrade to the hydrogen bomb made all of that pointless.
Fair-Wishbone-1190@reddit
I would go blind. 😆
Das_Rote_Han@reddit
My kids learned about stop drop and roll within the past 10 years in elementary school. And active shooters which seems to have replaced nuclear desk drills.
I also thought quicksand would be more of a problem for me as I got older.
blackpony04@reddit
Have you also told them to stay away from the Bermuda Triangle? That's an important one as well!
PumpikAnt58763@reddit
QUICKSAND, BABY! QUICKSAND!
turtle0831@reddit
I’ve never used it for fire, but it does squish bugs or spiders on most places on your body. Have used it for that lol.
ONROSREPUS@reddit
This made me laugh because I can see my wife doing it.
KurtStation68@reddit
Imagine trying to duck and cover today, creaking bones and can't get up... or holding onto a fart while walking and trying to cover it up.
swigs77@reddit
In our defense, we were raised by people who were taught to hide under their desks to protect them from a nuclear bomb.
gringoloco01@reddit
They were proud they figured out how to put out a fire.
I am still trying to figure out how hiding under my desk will help me survive a nuclear bomb.
HangingSnowflake@reddit
The desk thing was so ridiculous but we had those drills like twice a year! The 80s were a wild time.
Peas_Are_Upsidedown@reddit
I've seen enough videos of kids lighting themselves on fire for a tiktok or whatever and then run trying to put themselves out. We have to be living in a Twilight Zone episode. I am seriously just waiting for Rod Serling and his damn eyebrows to pop out at any moment.
