Do you order fish other than cod or haddock at the chippy?

Am I missing out? Is rock amazing? Is plaice worth the money?
pangolin_howls@reddit
I always order breaded Plaice if its available.
alphamagus@reddit
This!!!...Every time!!
catmadwoman@reddit
I love plaice but only if I'm eating in shop.
pangolin_howls@reddit
I get it when I go to Conwy, then straight to the waterside to eat it.
Witty_Professional_2@reddit
Where in Conwy off there next week and this looks delicious
pangolin_howls@reddit
The Galleon. Fishermans just over the road from it is also good but I don't think they sell Plaice.
surreyade@reddit
Nice to see a fellow connoisseur.
LordBrixton@reddit
I used to like rock, but it seems to be harder to find these days.
IrrelevantPiglet@reddit
Scampi is banging, well worth a go
MisterIndecisive@reddit
Nah they too fishy
Forward-Operation122@reddit
Hake it's very similar to cod but around £4 cheaper.
winterknight1979@reddit
I'll occasionally splash out on skate if im feeling posh
prankishink@reddit
is skate any different to cod? my mate had a huge piece of skate instead of cod last time at the fish and chip shop and I'm quite intrigued about trying it
winterknight1979@reddit
It's great but it's very different to cod/haddock/etc. (It's a small ray)
prankishink@reddit
ah thanks, i didn't realise it was a ray! that explains why it looked somewhat triangular on the plate. I just don't want to pick something bony but i'm guessing skate isn't?
Specialist_Emu7274@reddit
It is, but you basically scrape the meat off. I love skate but I’ve not had it from a chippy
winterknight1979@reddit
There's a flat sheet of cartilage on the bottom that you can't eat and have to scrape the meat off, but there's no actual bones.
Most skate in British chippies comes from these guys: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thornback_ray?
surfermark99@reddit
Battered mars bar
Prestigious-Age-3644@reddit
Haddock is a rarity its usually cod, i havnt had the chance to try any others though
Branch_Same@reddit
Rock always well until the current prices now I don’t bother at all.
Tompsk@reddit (OP)
What’s it like?
Aggravating_Ad5632@reddit
Have you ever eaten shark? It's pretty much the same, since dogfish are a species of small shark. The flesh is meatier in texture than that of bony fish, and there's only one "bone" in a piece of rock salmon - it's actually a single strip of cartilage from which the flesh can be easily pulled off. Flavour-wise, it’s good; it's not as strong as oily fish, but nowhere near as bland as cod.
MisterD90x@reddit
Loved Flake and Chip in Australia !
Branch_Same@reddit
Meatier than cod no little bones a former texture. Used to be my Friday treat as a kid in London we all ate Rock
Aggravating_Ad5632@reddit
If I can get it, mackerel. Sadly, chippies that sell it are few and far between. I can get rock/huss/dogfish, squid, plaice and whitebait (as well as cod or haddock) from my local place. Of them all, cod's the only one I'll give a miss as I find it far too bland.
That_Weather_1169@reddit
I always go for the famous steak and kidney pudding and gravy fish
Opening-Fortune4@reddit
I like plaice. It’s weird that it’s more expensive as it’s a cheaper fish. Can be quite strong tasting.
Neither_Process_7847@reddit
The good stuff is seriously pricy! But delicious.
Evening-Web-3038@reddit
It could be a price anchor sort of product. Something people rarely order that makes the 'common' fish option (cod I presume) look cheaper.
rcp9999@reddit
I used to love Rock when I grew up in the south but now I live in Wales and they think it's insane that people eat it.
superfiud@reddit
That's funny because I'm Welsh and was reading these replies thinking wtf is rock??
rcp9999@reddit
Anglers call it by it's other name, dogfish and chuck them back.
Worried-Penalty8744@reddit
My chippy sells haddock.
The other one that’s cheaper and a bit nastier sells “fish”
Not sure what these concepts of being able to choose types of fish are
Tompsk@reddit (OP)
Catfish is being used a lot as it tastes like cod but a lot cheaper I hear.
Neither_Process_7847@reddit
It really doesn't taste like cod! It's its own thing, and can be very nice - but fish shops really should say what fish they are selling! Cod or haddock are the best for classic battered white fish, but if they're the premium option and ling or hake are the standard then so be it, just say!
Sweaty-Adeptness1541@reddit
Basa (pangasius catfish) really doesn't taste like cod. It has a slightly sweet and muddy/pondy flavour like many freshwater fish, and often has quite a soft/mushy texture. It's a cheap way to buy protein, but it isn't a cod alternative.
Novel-Case6821@reddit
Same, it's just haddock at ours. Sometimes see 'angel cut' haddock whatever that means.
undoneyet@reddit
The only fish I’ll get from the chippy is Rock, also known as Huss, Rock Salmon, rock eel, angler fish, depending where you are and how traditional your chippy is.
I don’t like fishy fish, so Rock is just fantastic, also has a great flaky texture and it only has one bone.
Anxious-Potato-7323@reddit
I've personally never heard it called Angler fish but they're all names for Dogfish.
Neither_Process_7847@reddit
Plaice is nice, ultra fresh mackerel is even nicer. But very different to cod.
Buddha-dan@reddit
Yep, Huss if they have it.
Tompsk@reddit (OP)
Never seen Huss. Where are you getting your chippy tea?
Buddha-dan@reddit
I think it also goes by Rock Salmon, and a few other names. Mainly South Coast.
Anxious-Potato-7323@reddit
Yeah, Rock Salmon and Huss are both names for Dogfish.
EvilTaffyapple@reddit
Rock is great. Always really flavourful.
FinancialScore9070@reddit
I simply order fish and chips. Don’t really care if it’s something disguised as something else. If cat fish is cheaper but tastes the same, more power to chippy bossman
DanielH1979@reddit
Plaice is Ace
Impossible_Honey3553@reddit
I order rock from a certain place but it normally doesn’t have the skin on
Think-Committee-4394@reddit
Pollock … so much nicer than cod & cheaper
SnoopyMcDogged@reddit
Oh pollock fish fingers are fantastic!
Ring_Peace@reddit
Fishing ports usually have more choice; plaice, skate, sole, rock, other daily catches.
Emergency-Activity66@reddit
Plaice if its available
Sam-Lowry27B-6@reddit
Our chip shop has small or large fish. That's all they tell us. I usually go for a battered sausage
Fizl99@reddit
Plaice if its available. Rock is good too
nineteenthly@reddit
Although I stopped eating fish a very long time ago, shortly before I did so I once ordered plaice at the chippy, and it was nice. The shape was particularly pleasing.
Anon_on_internet@reddit
Haven't used a chippy in a couple of years, but always used to order Plaice if available.
DanielReddit26@reddit
I dont think I've seen anywhere offer anything other than those 2! Even then most around me only do Haddock (but that's Edinburgh which tbh has a lacklustre chippy game generally).
k0n3kt@reddit
I order cod or other without batter can't beat it
Geezer-McGeezer@reddit
Yes, I hate fish bones, so I order Huss (sometimes called Rock). It is a shark, therefore has cartillage and no bones !
Tompsk@reddit (OP)
I did not know that. Thanks.
spoo4brains@reddit
Depends on price and what is available.
