“When you ride into combat— act without attachment— and carry with you the confidence that you are fulfilling your calling in this life. Then you will know the way.” Krishna (“The Way”, season 4).
Xena as Kali chestpiece worn by Xena played by Lucy Lawless in the episode “The Way” from season 4. This ornate chest piece is a awesome piece of television history. This intricate crafted gold-plated chest piece featuring ornate Indian patterns, pearl bead accents, and stunning green and red faux gemstone embellishments.
The chestpiece was specifically used by Lucy herself, as the name was written on the inner part but the seller confirmed that due the past of the years it faded.
“The Way" (1999) episode caused significant real-world controversy due to its depiction of Hindu deities and the special Xena and Gabrielle relationship. It was temporarily pulled from distribution, and later on, was reinstated into the schedule in August 1999 after being edited to remove some of the most offensive scenes and with a disclaimer added.

Gods. 🤦♀️ My dyslexia reared its ugly head again and I read that as chesspiece. I was like, 'That is badass! She'd be like the queen, but better. Just wipe the board in one move.' Lol.
The costume piece looks great, though. Glad you have it. If you ever do a travelling exhibition, make she you come to Australia.

Was something as ornate as this constructed by the department completely from scratch, or would they have pieced it together from finds at costume stores or Indian clothing shops?

Probably both. Though the large decorative elements look like repurposed finnials for stairs and walls or parts of picture frames to me

Admittedly, the main aspect I remembered were the skulls. My eyes just couldn't get past them on all my rewatches. I'll try to do so on my next viewing. Thanks.
