Are Mike and Ike’s popular in the US?
Posted by mimyson@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 315 comments
I love them but not that easy to get in the UK and can be expensive (1.8lb bag in UK around £18, equivalent bag is£5 ($7.50) in the US.
Going in November so will be stocking up but just interested to know if they are loved or loathed in the US - and also only purchased just before you go into a movie as American sitcoms would have us believe?
Theimac74@reddit
I’d think of them as “movie theater candy” along with things like Milk Duds
Though I don’t know when I last got candy at a movie theater
brzantium@reddit
Junior Mints were my go to.
Wise-Parsnip5803@reddit
You buy them at the dollar store or Walmart and even l sneak them in.
BAMspek@reddit
Raisinets too. I can’t imagine eating those outside of a movie theater. I do enjoy them though.
Matrinka@reddit
I always buy movie theater candy boxes at Dollar Tree beforehand and sneak it in. Sour Patch Kids are always on the movie snack list.
mimyson@reddit (OP)
Milk duds was the other one I was going to mention (I like them as well but we have similar over here)
siobhanenator@reddit
You've got movie theater taste, friend. I also suggest finding some Runts, Dots, Whoppers, and Sour Patch Kids.
shelwood46@reddit
Non-pareils and Twizzlers (which you use as a straw).
Nerisrath@reddit
Junior Mints was always my goto movie candy.
Blanik_Pilot@reddit
I could eat a cereal bowl of junior mints
herehaveaname2@reddit
They have Malteasers, which I think are better than Whoppers.
Fappy_as_a_Clam@reddit
Goobers!
HelloMandalorian@reddit
Oooo...Whoppers...Malted milk balls, ftw!
front_rangers@reddit
Hahaha “movie theater candy” is pretty spot on. I absolutely fuck with Mike & Ike but you’re definitely right. Remember Buncha Crunch too? That was always my go to at the movie theater
I feel like Mike & Ike’s as well as Hot Tamales (same exact shape and consistency, just ine was citrus and one was spicy/cinnamon) used to be far more common
Persimmon_and_mango@reddit
Raisinets was mine! It's too sweet for me now, though. These days I usually get the kid's pack like all the old people do
Available-Egg-2380@reddit
I'll still fuck up a box of hot tamales 🤤
PlainTrain@reddit
The local Walmart has a bigger resealable bag of them. Not that the resealable feature gets much use.
PM_ME_CODE_CALCS@reddit
When I was young hot tamales and a glass of iced tea was a good snack.
jjmenace@reddit
Exactly, I don't think anyone eats them outside of a movie theater.
lefindecheri@reddit
What about licorice All-Sorts. Do they still make them?
mimyson@reddit (OP)
Do still in the UK but think they may have changed the recipe as not as nice now.
TumorYaelle@reddit
Before they reached car payment levels?
greenleo33@reddit
I love them!
emmasdad01@reddit
They are easily available, but I don’t know about popular.
Squish_the_android@reddit
Which begs the question, why are the so easy to find if no one really cares for them?
Just a stellar distributor?
EpicBlinkstrike187@reddit
Look at the box candy section at walmart. There’s like 25-30 choices. Maybe you could call 7 of them “popular”
I dunno who is buying bottlecaps and good n plenty’s that much but they’re still there too.
Guessing it’s just easy to stock a bunch of varieties. They’re in small boxes not taking up that much space
Zealousideal_Lab_427@reddit
I’m buying the Bottlecaps! I don’t really know why, it’s likely a nostalgia thing from childhood.
PlainTrain@reddit
That was a summer camp thing for me. Week at camp, small amount of money to spend, camp store with a variety of candy so I'd get one type of candy a day.
Rootbeer flavor bottlecaps were my favorite.
HelloMandalorian@reddit
I love the cola ones! There should be more cola flavored candy!
NekoTheSpookieCat@reddit
Agreed! I love the cola gummies! 😋
curious_eyebrow@reddit
Good n plenty is the best.
candurandu@reddit
I have a case of Bottlecaps in the other room. Bought it on clearance a few months ago for an average price of 80 cents per box. We take a box each time we go to the movies.
VRTravis@reddit
I'm that guy. I don't like our chocolate, but I love.sweet things, Mike and ike, sweet tarts. Spree. If it's powder and shaped or gummy, I am that guy!
PlainTrain@reddit
Hot tamales are my personal Kryptonite.
Tbplayer59@reddit
Mine too! I can resist for a couple weeks, but then the craving gets me
Odd-Artist-2595@reddit
I’m buying the good n plenty’s.
Minzplaying@reddit
Me too!
WestBrink@reddit
There's dozens of us!
Good n plenty's are great.
Illustrious-Shirt569@reddit
I’m buying both of those! My kids steal my bottle caps., but the Good’n’Plenty’s are all mine!
anonymouse278@reddit
Good n plentys are the kind of polarizing candy most people either never eat or could eat a little handful of every day. Growing up we almost always had a box in the pantry- you don't really want to eat an entire box of them in one sitting, but they're nice when you want a couple bites of something sweet. I still buy them pretty often- one of my kids will eat them happily and the other two think they're disgusting.
herehaveaname2@reddit
ME! I buy both the bottlecaps AND the good n plentys!
You can keep the snowcaps though. Not my fav.
UntidyVenus@reddit
I buy the good and plenty's about once a month
MiserableMemory5149@reddit
Box candy's are great for movie night, get that movie theatre vibe without paying a mortgage on ticket prices
ndubitably@reddit
Plus long shelf life. I think they last 1-1.5 years before they start getting harder to eat.
Icy_Category_2275@reddit
Plus its America, we are very food candy and sugar oriented compared to other countries. Its thick in our blood.
KolKoreh@reddit
Have you been to the UK??
Icy_Category_2275@reddit
Negative. Why am I showcasing ignorance here?
hiddentalent@reddit
The United States ranks 26th in per-capita sugar consumption, well behind places like Australia, Ireland, Iceland, Lebanon and others.
TumorYaelle@reddit
Literally.
Vegetable-Shirt-4319@reddit
And my experience tells me the movie theaters and shops are very comfortable leaving them on the shelf loooong after that.
Appropriate-Food1757@reddit
People do care for them which is why they are available everywhere.
Quirky-Invite7664@reddit
People over 80
bearfootin_9@reddit
Don't be ridiculous. The over-80 crowd prefers Lemonheads, Atomic Fireballs, and Bazooka Joe..
Appropriate-Food1757@reddit
Definitely not
lemonprincess23@reddit
I think it’s like a mounds bar situation
I’ve never met anyone eat a mounds bar, I’ve never seen anyone buy one when I worked as a cashier, but obviously there must be some sort of market for them or they wouldn’t exist right?
Zealousideal_Lab_427@reddit
Ohh, I’ve loved Mounds bars since I was a kid! My husband loves them too. I don’t go out of my way to seek them out, but occasionally at the checkout I’ll grab a Mounds/Almond Joy for us.
run4cake@reddit
Eh, I don’t think people object to Mike and Ike’s like they do to anything with coconut. I’ll just throw out an almond joy or mounds bar because it’s hard to find anyone who will even eat them.
I’m not really actually sure these exist anymore, but Mike and Ike’s were always more a candy I’d get out of the 25c machines at the front of the grocery store as a kid. Runts were also similar. I’ve never wanted a whole movie theater box of either candy, but I might choose a handful of one of those over gum or m&ms.
aoeuismyhomekeys@reddit
I've met people who liked them. I think they're aggressively mid-tier candies but they do have some fans.
Iliketoplan@reddit
Most candies.
illegal_miles@reddit
I loved them as a kid. They were my go-to when my mom would take me to the drug store to get some candy before going to the movie theater (no way she was going to pay movie theater prices lol).
I don’t really ever get them for myself as an adult but I did buy my sister a box of them during the holidays from the dollar store to throw into a gift bag and she was stoked (she’s almost 40).
DiHard_ChistmasMovie@reddit
Do that with my kids too. We hit the dollar store then head to the movies. Several years ago, my then 4 year old kept asking for her candy when we were still buying tickets. So I told her "in a minute baby, we're going to get candy next." Then she said "No Dad, the candy in your pocket" pointing at my coat.
The cashier was grinning from ear to ear, but she didn't say anything.
Bubba_Gump_Shrimp@reddit
I love em. Especially the sour ones.
_-Cleon-_@reddit
Non-dairy-based candy has a long shelf life and is easy/cheap to manufacture.
BroughtBagLunchSmart@reddit
Seems like a candy boomers had before candy was good. My dad used to like necco wafers. Thanks for giving me a better childhood than you had dad.
Fappy_as_a_Clam@reddit
My Greatest Generation grandfather loved Necco Wafers and used to give them to use as kids all the time.
I still buy them every one in a while, and God damn it I'll just come out and say it, I'm tired of living a lie: I like Necco Wafers!
Suppafly@reddit
Same, except for the dark colored ones. But I do acknowledge that they taste a little like chalk and that's just part of the appeal.
DefrockedWizard1@reddit
yep, no thanks
AzureLoup@reddit
My parents love them though my dad prefers Good & Plenty more. So they fall under Baby Boomer and Gen X candy in my head along with Dots and Whoppers. Runts and Bottle Caps lean more toward millennials in my experience. Sno-Caps are ones that I only ones that I feel are less likely to be chosen in my experience.
NotBradPitt9@reddit
We just use bags of sugar now it’s the new trend. Whenever I want something sweet I just have a couple tablespoons and it’s back to work.
shelwood46@reddit
I did used to drink directly from the Honey Bear when I was a kid.
HelloMandalorian@reddit
It's clean energy. 😃
OkPerformance2221@reddit
Yep, coal for the tumtum.
getElephantById@reddit
Oh, a bit of a health guru I see. Cutting out high fructose corn syrup and everything.
TooManyDraculas@reddit
When I was still running a bar a few years back. We had this local kid who would come in to sell candy, always had like movie theater style packs of various things.
Mike and Ikes were one of his top sellers. Specifically the Mega Mix. It's the sort of thing people genuinely like, but most don't think to regularly buy. But they see it and they'll grab it.
johnnyblaze-DHB@reddit
The Mega Mix and the Mega Mix Sours are delicious and I buy both frequently at the grocery store.
ShakespearianShadows@reddit
I was always more of a red hots guy.
Inside-Try-394@reddit
It’s a style of candy popular in the 40s-1960s in movie theatres. So far as I know there’s no US fan club per se. I am glad you like them.
MillieBirdie@reddit
I've seen them in a literal bargain bin at Walmart. Have never seen anyone eat them.
FightingWithSporks@reddit
I gave you an award because I don’t know why I find that so funny
PromiseThomas@reddit
This reminded me that I had a box of sour watermelon Mike and Ike’s in my kitchen. Pretty exciting because I was craving candy and thought I didn’t have any. Thanks!
Prestigious-Dog-2150@reddit
I wouldn't even know what Mike and Ike's are except for a friend who loved them. There are zillions, nay, jillions of brands of candy sold in the U.S. If they're still being sold, they must be making a profit, but other than that.....???
FuggyFresh@reddit
I live minutes away from the factory. Let me know if you want me to ship you some
helloitsmejenkem@reddit
Movie theater only. Not popular option. But you can buy them everywhere people just dont.
Organic_Salad2910@reddit
They used to be popular back in the late 90s’s. I don’t think they are now. I actually can’t even remember the last time I saw them or ate them.
makeheavyofthis@reddit
For a second I thought you were asking if the names Mike and Ike are popular names in the US 😆
arcteryx17@reddit
Forgot they even existed
JointAccount24601@reddit
They're always at stores, and I've eaten them. Not a huge fan, and I've never seen someone go crazy about loving them.
MsPooka@reddit
They aren't sold everywhere. I generally see them at Dollar Tree. I think some grocery stores sell them. I do like them but I usually choose something else. They aren't one of the most popular candies but everyone has probably tried them and knows what they are.
PadiddleHopper@reddit
Hot Tamales are the superior candy in that category.
thebigj3wbowski@reddit
They’re better than good n plenty
_thalassashell_@reddit
I don’t know many people who eat them, but I love them.
When I was very little, the hardware store I went to with my dad on weekends had them in a dispenser, and I would be allowed to get some. Even 30+ years later, they still remind me of that :)
Have you tried the sour watermelon ones? I just tried them last week and they’re super tasty!
mimyson@reddit (OP)
I haven’t as I usually don’t like sour sweets but so many people have recommended them that I am going to give them a try. Thanks.
AccountantRadiant351@reddit
We usually got them in little boxes at Halloween, or big boxes for watching a movie or in a gas station for car snacks on a road trip. I like them but haven't eaten them in years. Dollar Tree sells the big boxes.
freerondo9@reddit
You know what? That's actually a good question. They're one of the oldest candies we have. They're on the shelf in just about every shop's candy section. We've all eaten them, but I can't remember ever purposely buying them. I don't remember seeing anyone else purposely buy them either. They're often found in the variety packs of Halloween candy, though. How the hell are Mike and Ike's still a thing?
Exciting_Lawyer8428@reddit
They are pretty easy to find at Walmart or dollar stores. 1.50ish a box maybe less
Silvanus350@reddit
Uh… no.
Newmillstream@reddit
Just a heads up about price. Movie theater candy at the big chains tends to be closer to $6-$8, though some local theaters charge something more reasonable like $2-$3 a box. I can get a pocketbook size box at the supermarket for under $1.50. I’m not comparing quality there, but just the cost of entry.
I like them as an occasional snack at home. They aren’t as beloved as some other candies, but I don’t know anyone that hates them and they are widely available. Certainly it’s more popular than say, Chuckles.
LetterheadClassic306@reddit
ngl i see mike and ike's all the time at gas stations and walmart but they're not like a huge cultural thing. people grab them for movies or road trips yeah. they're decently loved but not top tier like sour patch kids. for stocking up, the best prices are usually at walmart or target where you can get that 1.8lb bag for around $6-7. also check dollar stores - smaller boxes but cheap. just avoid airport candy shops or movie theaters, they mark it way up. the sour flavors are my personal go to.
Theslowestmarathoner@reddit
No
LowCress9866@reddit
Love em! They're probably third, a distant third, but third, in popularity among fruity flavored candies after Skittles and Starburst. Pretty easy to find
GaryJM@reddit
I'm filled with patriotic pride by the fact that America's top two fruit-flavoured candies are British in origin.
max_m0use@reddit
Wait until you hear about our national anthem.
LowCress9866@reddit
They started over there, but we got them right. Black currant skittles are weird. Not bad but not the tasty grape we get. Black currant Starburst though are among the most unpleasant candies I've ever had. Right down there with black jelly beans and black licorice.
Redjeepkev@reddit
My wife loves them
AJRoadpounder@reddit
Mike and Ike’s are delicious but I like Jolly Joes better.
VoodooYouDoSoWell@reddit
I know plenty of Mike's. Only know of one Ike, but he was popular enough to be President.
madonnagaga@reddit
Love the sours!
ssk7882@reddit
I find it odd that people are citing them as Boomer/GenX candy, because I'm GenX and have no idea what they are. Never saw them at a movie theater, don't remember them being given out as Halloween candy, never saw them in the "penny candy shop" that I loved as a little kid...
Seriously, if it hadn't been for that comment, I would have assumed that they came along in the decades after my time of paying attention to low-tier candy brands. Could they be regional?
ForceOfNature525@reddit
You can buy a 5lb bag of assorted Mike and Ikes on Amazon for like $22 plus shipping. Fun fact, they're made by Just Born candies, which originates from my home state of Pennsylvania. They also make Peeps, Hot Tamales, and Goldenberg's Peanut Chews. The peanut chews have crushed peanuts and molasses in them, and they're gluten free. You don't find molasses in candy that often.
EloquentRacer92@reddit
Oh yeah, you can find them EVERYWHERE!
linkxrust@reddit
Not really
Just_Me1973@reddit
I love Mike and Ikes! Especially the tropical fruit flavor. They’re super easy to find. You can even find them at a gas station. I don’t eat them much tho. My sugar tolerance has become very low as I’ve gotten older. But I’ll buy a small package once in a while. I eat a few pieces here and there. It usually lasts about a week. But when I was young I could just pour them into my mouth and gobble a whole box down in one sitting.
Rose_E_Rotten@reddit
My Dollar Tree is regularly stocking the many flavors of Mike and Ikes. They do sell frequently.
Lemon_Poppies@reddit
They are in every corner store in my area. my favorite is the orange ones.
No_Importance_750@reddit
Very. The place I work at sells them. I sold like 20 boxes at least yesterday.
Tbplayer59@reddit
Original fruits
TheVentiLebowski@reddit
Some people like the Mikes but not the Ikes. Others like to spice them up a bit.
DrBlankslate@reddit
They're a common movie candy, but "popular"? I don't think that word applies. People know what they are, but they're not the go-to candy for most of us.
peachring01@reddit
I LOVE Mike and Ike’s!! I don’t eat them often but since they are very shelf stable they’re stocked everywhere.
chkn1703@reddit
Mike & Ike's are available anywhere around me. Gas stations and grocery stores all have them, different flavors too!
They are so good and my dad loved them as well, so I always bring a box when I visit him at the cemetery. I think their popularity may really depend on the person though but I've found most of the mid life adults I know like them.
Dolphin412@reddit
They are my my 2nd favorite movie candy. Milk duds is my 1st.
PissedCaucasian@reddit
Hot tamales are better and I think more popular. Mike and Ike flavors you can get with regular jelly beans.
joeatonlv@reddit
They always have them at my local Dollar General!
marksman81991@reddit
My wife and I love them. I like the tropical ones.
EgbertSouse2@reddit
I buy them in bulk, sold by the pound, at Winco, also Hot Tamales, but I don't usually buy a whole pound of them.
RageDeemz@reddit
I am helplessly addicted to Mike and Ikes Mega Mix Sour. It's the closest thing to Zours I've found, which I wish were still around. They've got some other good flavors too - I mostly like the sour ones. I'm not a fan of the standard green box Mike and Ikes though
sundial11sxm@reddit
Try the sour ones in the box! I love them
TucsonTacos@reddit
Mike and Ike’s are trash but the sour ones are one of my favorite candies
Youd0y0u@reddit
Came here to say this! The sour ones are absolutely delicious, it’s hard for me not to eat the whole box at once.
mimyson@reddit (OP)
Don’t usually like sours and do avoid when I buy them. Will give them a try next time.
Background_Humor5838@reddit
The maga mix is full of tropical flavors but they are not sour. I definitely recommend that mix.
InfidelZombie@reddit
Possibly the best non-gummy fruit-flavored candy!
KittiesRule1968@reddit
I love those!
_maezing@reddit
Everyone knows what they are in the US but I'm not sure they're anyone's favorite lol. At least no one I've personally met. I think most people's opinion would be "they're okay 🤷♀️"
somecow@reddit
Not really. But they’re delicious. Can even fuck with people and put all the flavors in a bowl, hot tamales too.
anonymouse278@reddit
The only time I ever have them is the tiny individual boxes when we get a big assorted bag of candy for trick or treaters at Halloween. They're a relatively inexpensive "filler" candy to stretch the now stupidly expensive mini chocolate bars. See also: Milk duds, sweet tarts, nerds, Dots, dum dums.
JadedDreams23@reddit
I love them!
FreeStateOfPortland@reddit
I’d say people definitely like them, but I wouldn’t say they’re “popular“ like M&M’s, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups or Snickers.
shelwood46@reddit
I think of it as a movie candy, movie concession stands often have it. It's available in most stores, though. I personally think dollar stores are the best place to stock up on foreign candy (I take a day trip with a friend to Canada every year, just over the border, to stock up on candy, which I usually get from Dollarama). I don't think it's that generally popular now (it was fairly big when I was a kid in the 70s, many many years ago), people tend to go for the sour stuff now when they get non-chocolate candies.
CheesE4Every1@reddit
I absolutely adore them. But I'm also the weirdo that likes mounds
OK_Stop_Already@reddit
yeah i like em. they're better than jelly beans, that's for sure.
Significant-Eye4146@reddit
I know 0 people who like Mike and Ikes and I’ve had them maybe once in my life haha. I find it funny (endearing) that someone from the UK likes them - how did you come across them?
mimyson@reddit (OP)
Just brought a box when I was over once and really liked them (been lucky enough to visit the US many times over the years). You can get them in specialist American candy stores in the UK and the occasional odd grocery store but the price is high when you do find them. Used to be the same with Dr Pepper but that is much more easily available now.
Rosesandbubblegum@reddit
You should try Hot Tamales! They are the same thing but cinnamon flavored instead of fruit. I like them better
Significant-Eye4146@reddit
Oh man, they’re importing the Mike and Ike’s! It’s one of those always there, but who actually eats them? kind of candies. Genuinely love that you love them and hope that you can grab as many as you can!
Decent-Structure-128@reddit
Welles you come back, try blackberry Dr Pepper, it rocks!
mimyson@reddit (OP)
Tried it last November (last time I was over). It is great but I drank so much I went off it (can’t get it here).
ShipComprehensive543@reddit
people love them but they are less common and seen by kids as old fashioned candy.
Redbubble89@reddit
It is available and people know what they are but it's like Hot Tamales or Good and Plenty.
If Skittles and M&Ms are top teir, Mike and Ikes are B Tier candy. Kids wouldn't complain at Halloween but it's not a top seller and can't recall a craving for them.
deterioratingflesh@reddit
Helllllll yeahhhhhhhh broherrrr
blipsman@reddit
They're not super popular, but pretty common to find in most stores that sell candy (grocery stores, convenience stores, Target/Walmart, pharmacies, etc.) and at movie theater candy counters. You'll see small boxes given out at Halloween.
I like them... I typically prefer fruity/chewy candy to chocolate so I like them, along with Swedish Fish, red licorice, Dots
Chaseoliver@reddit
Not since they divorced
chilebuzz@reddit
Love Mike & Ike's. Used to eat way too many during my college days.
Aviyes7@reddit
One of my favorites along with their Hot Tamales.
Ok-commuter-4400@reddit
I only ever eat them at the movie theater or because someone's given them out on Halloween. And they're not my favorite candy for either of those occasions.
Worried_Badger2000@reddit
This is my favorite candy, you can get them anywhere but I don’t think I know anyone else who would list them if you asked about the best candy.
AnchoviePopcorn@reddit
Im dying! We literally have a giant poster board in our office that says “Would you ever buy Mike and Ike’s?” Check yes/no.
This is because I bought some last week and everyone was making fun of me.
So they’re available everywhere, but not super popular.
manic-pixie-attorney@reddit
Check Dollar Tree
j2142b00@reddit
Don't give away the secret location! Box of Mike & Ikes and a Rip It makes for a great movie night
JtotheC23@reddit
We have them. I've never tried one, but they're obviously popular enough to be around. I remember like 10-15 years ago they had a big ad campaign with a premise of Mike and Ike going their separate ways. Not sure if they sold them as separate products during that time or not tho.
StrongStyleDragon@reddit
No. Most buzz I heard was when they were breaking up
Reaganson@reddit
Not in my experience, including Good & Plenty.
Beck316@reddit
One of my favorites.
rustybrazenfire@reddit
They are everywhere here and are popular enough to have a good half dozen varieties or so available.
knightni73@reddit
You can buy them on Amazon, I believe.
mimyson@reddit (OP)
You can but way more than you guys have to pay (around 3 times more)
knightni73@reddit
You can order through US Amazon.
mimyson@reddit (OP)
You can also get them through UK Amazon but price is high from the UK and delivery is high from the US. Appreciate the suggestion though.
Certain_Accident3382@reddit
I love them but they are easiest to find in the "movie theater" size, 4.25oz., in my area. To be honest, the original Mike & Ike's are harder to find in my area than the other fruit flavors, but still as easy as Good n Plentys. Those typically go for $1.50 ish a box, so 1.8 lbs would be £9.03 in boxes over here.
Yourlilemogirl@reddit
I haven't thought of them as popular since like 94-98 during elementary school but only cuz ppl used to prank friends by mixing in some Red Hots that are cinnamon spicy flavor and look identical to Mike&Ike's red candy
Danibear285@reddit
They exist 👍🏻
Ok_Orchid1004@reddit
Yeah pretty common here. Check places like walmart.
PokeCaptain@reddit
Can’t speak for everyone else, but I like them
JustCallMeKV@reddit
I live near the production facility where they are made!
Emotional_Ad5714@reddit
They are common and relatively popular. Have you tried the tropical, berry, and grape flavors too? Original is best, but I like them all.
Nervous_Ladder_1860@reddit
Feel like they are still sold many places but idk if I would call them popular
drumzandice@reddit
I love them, just rarely eat them to avoid the sugar. I'm going to the UK in a few weeks - should I just bring a bunch to give away and make friends?
mimyson@reddit (OP)
Would work for me.
eyetracker@reddit
They are a specific category of "cardboard box" candy which aren't hard to find if you're looking for it but are available in a different space/niche than other candy. Like if you go to a gas station convenience store during a road trip, you're going to find Snickers, Skittles, M&Ms on the shelves but not Mike & Ike. You can instead find it at movie theaters for a premium price or a grocery store for dirt cheap. Also something you can find during Halloween often.
I don't think many people think it's their favorite candy but they probably sell enough. What would be divisive in the "cardboard box" category is Good & Plenty because many people here hate licorice with as much passion as Central Europeans like it. The converse of root beer I suppose.
Other candies in the category besides M&I and G&P include Dots, Hot Tamales, Junior Mints, Milk Duds, Whoppers.
Pleasant-Bedroom6770@reddit
Most underrated candy of all time
_haha_oh_wow_@reddit
They're around but not super popular. I wouldn't call them unpopular either though.
baalroo@reddit
Literally have a jar of the n that I keep full on my work desk. I ate one about 5 minutes ago.
Completely-Lost9@reddit
Popular enough to be a common candy choice, not popular enough that I've ever seen anyone buy them
onlyreason4u@reddit
I'd say about 80% of the candy on the shelves on shelves everywhere, that we all know about, is stuff we've only even eaten because we got it for Halloween as kids. Another 10% we got specifically only on Easter or Christmas (excluding Chocolate in holiday shapes). The other 10% is popular stuff people actually buy sometimes for kids or a candy bowl. I can't even remember the last time I've bought candy for myself as an adult other than chocolates on a rare occasion. Mike and Ikes are a Halloween candy purely.
The most popular dessert/treat in the US is ice cream. The good soft serve and custard the rest of the world doesn't have, and hard ices. Ice cream novelties are popular too, but a distant 3rd to those two. Then it probably goes cookies (Cholocate Chip is #1), then Brownies, cakes, pies, etc. Candy is less popular.
patawpha@reddit
You can have all of them. If i could send you the entire US supply as well as their manufacturing facility I would.
Business-Abroad-1301@reddit
They’re good mixed in with popcorn and sour patch kids
bryanisbored@reddit
i only like the sour ones. tried them on a whim because i love sour candy and theyre a favorite.
FilthyMindz69@reddit
One of my favorites, easily found, relatively popular.
MattFlynnIsGOAT@reddit
TIL people really don't like Mike and Ikes.
They're pretty good Idk.
JNoodle89@reddit
They are the most popular jelly bean. But jelly beans are generally seen as old fashioned. They’re okay.
VariegatedPlumage@reddit
I love them and you can get them in most drugstores and bodegas but they are kind of a mid-tier candy.
OldStyleThor@reddit
If you're 10.
SweetieFootModelling@reddit
if i have to pick a box candy, I usually go for junior mints, but honestly I could fuck up some mike and likes right now
AhSoulsOnFire@reddit
I like the mega sour mix
Background_Humor5838@reddit
I love them. They are better than jelly beans and don't stick to your teeth as much as Skittles but I like Skittles too. I think they would be more popular if people remembered they existed and tried all the different flavor varieties they make. The sour Mike n ikes are super sour. So good.
Traditional_Trust418@reddit
I always see them in the stores but I never seen anyone buy or eat them
faroutsunrise@reddit
The sours are #1 in my heart
CaptainPunisher@reddit
Go to a Dollar Tree. They should have big boxes for $1.50 each. They're a common movie candy option. Dollar Tree is pretty much everywhere.
FlyByPC@reddit
They exist here, and if I go to the local 7-11, I'll probably find some.
I tried them once and decided I didn't like them -- it felt like trying to eat plastic.
Severe_Albatross_835@reddit
The sour ones are really good!
MoonieNine@reddit
I ate those all the time as a kid and I would still eat them now if I didn't have to watch my sugar. They are pretty much pure sugar and artificial coloring
Aspie_In_Storybrooke@reddit
Yes you can get them pretty much anywhere that sells candy. Walmart , dollar stores, grocery stores. They are less than $2 USD for like a 4.25oz box of them. For the 10oz bag it is like $5 or $6 USD.
TsundereLoliDragon@reddit
Not really. Like other people said, I think of them as movie theater or Halloween candy. I'd probably rather eat Jelly Belly jelly beans.
mcculloughpatr@reddit
They’re definitely movie theater candy. Lots of candy is sold in “theater” sized boxes in grocery stores and gas stations. You can find Mike and Ike’s, and the many varieties, almost anywhere.
Mysterious_Hotdogs@reddit
They're good if they aren't stale. You definitely see them wherever there's candy being sold though, one of the classics.
BeneficialShame8408@reddit
I like them. I find different kinds at CVS stores, you could look there. I really like the sour ones
thomasjmarlowe@reddit
They’re around, but I feel like the ‘original mix’ gets a little overshadowed for some of their other flavors like the cinnamon ones, sour ones, etc.
Apart_Insect_8859@reddit
They are available at my workplace snack shop. They're 'movie theater candy' because they come in a box, but I haven't seen them in a movie theater in a long time.
I think the standard Mike and Ikes are not popular. Their alternative flavors, like their "Hot Tamales" cinnamon ones and the Tropical medley, seem a lot more popular and are the ones I always see at the store. The tropical kind is the one sold at the work snack shop, not the original. I like them, and will buy them if I want a snack with a firm, chewy texture (sometimes, you just want to bite something). My retired father likes Hot Tamales as a favorite candy. I tend to buy a box at random on a whim.
They are a bit old fashioned, and chocolate candies are probably the most-favorite, followed by sour gummy things, and then other cadies after that.
Their appeal is likely the long shelf life, so it's fine if they don't sell right away, and that they don't melt or get messy, so you see them more in the summer months. But you can't really give them to small children, because they're so chewy and seem like a choking hazard. I agree that they're a 'background candy'.
FYI: the reason why boxed candy is seen as "movie theater candy" is because snack hawkers in movie theaters got banned as disruptive, and an entrepreneur created a vending machine to replace them. He would offer theater owners a small percentage of the profit for permission to place the vending machines in their theater lobbies. The machines required the snacks to be in a standardized box. He commissioned and supplied the boxed candies for his machines. The vending machines were insanely profitable and the man had thousands of them, but soon theaters shifted to full, staffed concession stands, and the entrepreneur shifted away from the vending machines, and instead became a candy supplier, selling the now-familiar and expected boxed treats to the concession stands. There is an episode of "The Food that Built America" about it, and it's very interesting.
Watcher0011@reddit
I wouldn’t say they are the most popular, but they are available in most stores
AcademicSavings634@reddit
Remember when Mike and Ike broke up?
Zenthane@reddit
They exist, I know people who will eat them, but I don't think I know anyone who thinks they're the best thing out there. In my opinion there's just too many better fruit flavored candies.
Traditional_Entry183@reddit
I loved them as a teenager in the 90s. I can't say Ive seen them in a store in many years.
Current_Poster@reddit
Someone must like them, they're commonly available.
Educational-Big-6609@reddit
I love them. Available at just about any store that sells candy.
ABelleWriter@reddit
Not sure how popular they are, but you can get them in most Walmart stores.
RevolutionaryRock823@reddit
I would never actively pick them as a candy to eat, but my daughter got me a pack of sour watermelon flavor for mother's Day and they were NOICE. I actually really liked them. And also I never go to movies, so I'm not sure how popular they are there lol
e_first@reddit
I love the sour mike and ikes!
PerfectAnonym@reddit
FINALLY, some hard hitting questions. They're pretty common, so I guess they're popular enough to be common
smythe70@reddit
Mine were delivered yesterday but it's 7 bucks for a 10 oz bag from Amazon, love them!
_IndyCar@reddit
I like them. I’ve been looking for the Ice Cream Truck edition
lithomangcc@reddit
They have small boxes 3 for 1 dollar.
mimyson@reddit (OP)
3 small boxes in the UK would likely cost you $5+ big boxes are $7 and a big bag would be over $25.
lithomangcc@reddit
I can get a 120g box for a $1.40 after tax each on Amazon. I have Prime, so free shipping. Check places like Wallgreens pharmacy or Walmart. Some candy stores in cities will charge $2 or more.
G00dSh0tJans0n@reddit
Never heard of it. I know Mike's hard lemonade?
Busy-Negotiation1078@reddit
I love Mike & Ikes, as well as Hot Tamales (the hot cinnamon version). But then I love anything chewy like that - jelly beans, Swedish fish, fruit slices, love them all. And I pretty much hate chocolate, especially plain chocolate.
CatsMom4Ever@reddit
I love Mike and Ike, but only the original flavor. But popular? I don't know.
DizzyLead@reddit
They're part of the Chewy Candy-Coated Jelly Triumvirate for me: Mike and Ikes for the various fruit, Red Hots for Cinnamon, and Jolly Joes for Grape. I wouldn't say that they're as recognizable as some other brands (say, Jolly Ranchers or M&Ms), but they have their following, and I think many people would know what you're talking about if you mentioned them.
FREDICVSMAXIMVS@reddit
Circus Peanut gang represent! 😃
ProfessionQuick3461@reddit
I love them, but they're not probably up there with the most popular of candies in the US. Skittles are more popular here.
Mediocre-Oil-5322@reddit
They are commonly available and reasonably popular. They probably don't make the top 10 list when it comes to candies for most people, but some really love them. I probably buy them a couple times a year.
guppie-beth@reddit
Professional basketball player Josh Hart is a Mike & Ike’s candy ambassador or something like that. He has his own flavor.
EastCoastAlley@reddit
I feel like they were more popular when coin operated gumball/candy machines were more prevalent
ChocolatePain@reddit
They're well known and available, but I wouldn't say they're in the upper echelon of popular candies, especially among kids. Even as a millennial, I see them as a pseudo-old person candy.
areacode212@reddit
They are essentially jelly beans but in a different shape. I've gone though Mike & Ike phases before when I would hit up the dollar store for some cheap candy and they were a reliable go-to (especially if I was going to sneak them into a movie theater later).
Nowadays I wouldn't go out of my way for them, or even pick up a box if I saw them, but they're fine for what they are.
No_Discipline5218@reddit
I used to live by the factory in Bethlehem PA. Same place that makes Peeps.
Available-Stage-1146@reddit
Find a Dollar Store where you are going. They almost always have them and are cheap.
Old_Ant7118@reddit
I don't know that I've ever seen anyone eat them in the wild, but they're certainly easy to find on the shelves.
forgotwhatisaid2you@reddit
The sour ones are quite good.
MSPdude7@reddit
They are really basically slightly elongated jelly beans. I happen to like jelly beans (depending on the flavor, at least), so I find Mike and Ike’s to be ok. They had a root beer flavor that I was pretty fond of, but I haven’t seen it available in a while. I’ve tried a few other flavors in the past year or so, and didn’t like them as much as I remembered from long ago.
whatdoidonowdamnit@reddit
Yeah, I could buy Mike & Ike’s without even crossing a street from my home. I won’t because I don’t like them, but I could.
xtheboard@reddit
They're probably as popular as dots
dumbassidiot69420@reddit
Hellll no, dots are to mike and ikes as oatmeal raisin is to chocolate chip cookies
gc3@reddit
Back in the 1960's you coukd get them at the corner newstand. No longer
Saab-2007-93@reddit
I used to have candy vending machines theyd sell fairly fast. Theyre cheap to get in bulk. I think they taste pretty good too. My favorite is tropical or sour. But ill eat any kind. Another fruity favorite of mine is dots, nerd ropes, and cherry sour balls.
GarciaWolf@reddit
I can go to any store right now and buy them.. but I have to go to dollar tree to get my Jolly Joes
beardiac@reddit
They are readily available - usually in concession-sized boxes - for around $2 here at convenient stores, drug stores, and some grocery stores. They are likely lower on the list of popular fruity candies than things like Sour Patch Kids and Skittles (and the hundred varieties of these various brands that keep coming out), but they aren't unpopular. My daughter gets them semi-regularly because they don't necessarily get stuck in her braces as some other candies do.
Yeegis@reddit
Pretty typical cinema candy.
Prize_Sorbet3366@reddit
I love them - I used to get them all the time when I was in high school back in the 80's, and for quite a few years after. But, I haven't had them in a long time because I've just gotten away from candy in general.
JayPlays40k@reddit
I find them at Dollar Tree all the time, and I adore them!
Ok-Walk-8040@reddit
You can find them at just about any store that sells candy.
TheJenniMae@reddit
My husband loves them.
Glitter-Goblin@reddit
Oh, I like Mike and Ike’s, just got some like ice cream flavored ones from the Family Dollar
You should be able to get them anywhere, a lot of stores sells candy and they’re cheap so they almost always there.
Grocery stores, gas stations, convenient stores, any of the dollar stores, etc
biggwermm@reddit
They were in the 80’s
Haluszki@reddit
I like them. They are available at most grocery stores, gas stations, and drug stores. I don’t know if that equates to popularity.
I’ve never been in the break room at work and had anyone strike up a conversation about how many Mike’n Ikes they crushed over the weekend.
Sufficient-Wolf-1818@reddit
I have no clue what they are! I guess not popular in my circle of friends, family and acquaintances.
Seeggul@reddit
Have you ever seen a trailer for a new movie where you recognize one of the actors, and you're like, "oh yeah, they were pretty good in this other movie I saw" but you don't feel like you are any more motivated to see the new movie because that actor is in it? That's kind of the spot Mike and Ike's occupy in the candy aisle here.
big-gay-aha@reddit
they sell them at every gas station but they’re not very popular at all
DubiousAdviceGiver@reddit
Yes, but we refer to them and Michael and Ichaels.
Floopydoodler@reddit
Loooove them, but just the original flavors. Mike and/or Ike decided to get fancy with all kinds of flavors. But the original 5 are still the best mix. I always take a few boxes when I travel. They are easy to pack, won't melt and if they spill they are easy to clean up.
chaosrulz0310@reddit
Eldest kid loves the damn things.
Ginger0331@reddit
I prefer the sour ones and dollar general has them all the time for 1$ a box
recreant129@reddit
Can I have to number
13mys13@reddit
they're hot tamales' bland basic cousin
myotheroneders@reddit
I love them, but I don't get them often. I don't buy candy in general much anymore. The company that makes them, Just Born, is based about 20 minutes from where I live. They also make Peeps. There used to be a Peeps store here that sold pretty much every variety of Peeps, Mike and Ikes, and other products they sold.
I went to high school with someone who's dad worked at Just Born and they would get to take home cases of Mike and Ikes if the boxes or something were misprinted. So we had them for snacks all the time. I'm not really sure hoe popular they are nationwide or if more a local thing around here since the company was local.
scope_creep@reddit
Never heard of them.
petg16@reddit
Hot Tamales are better! The only positive to my misspent youth trapped in Hobby Lobby. (Only craft store we had in the 80s)
Apprehensive-Neck-12@reddit
I personally love them
ArcadeToken95@reddit
They're a movie theater candy, something eaten on rare occasion but not something someone is going to, say, grab from a gas station
Live-Medium8357@reddit
my kids/spouse like the sour ones. Or the watermelon ones. There are many options that are better than the classic version.
they are cheap and easy to find. The good ones (sour, specific flavors) are harder to find for some reason.
Bullehh@reddit
"Where your boyfriend? Where your boyfriend at? Is he getting you refreshments? Is he tall? Is he gettin you mike n ikes? You like mike n ikes? Is he hefty? Is he coming back? Where your boyfriend at?"
Exact_Friendship_502@reddit
My kids love the 20 flavor pack and the sour ones, but we never buy the regular ones.
The “movie theater” style boxes are only $1.50 at the grocery store.
mouses555@reddit
They’re ok, can buy em anywhere but only my grandma eats em I think
HecticTurtIe@reddit
My mom loves them, they are super easy to find and they have a bunch of varieties too. You can usually get a good deal on them at Walmart, they will put a giant bin of candy near the check out
miketugboat@reddit
Like em alright, but not enough to buy them. My dad really likes them. I think they are most popular with gen x.
You will have no trouble finding them at grocery stores, gas stations, and convenience stores.
Interesting-Card5803@reddit
My wife loves them. I loathe them. You can almost always find them in the movie theaters
Delta1225@reddit
I love them, I buy a box at the grocery store for about $1.25 before going to the movies (where they're priced around $6.)
BananaJelloXlii@reddit
Or buy them at the Dollar Tree for about a quarter of the price and smuggle them in like most people :).
Imaginary_Ladder_917@reddit
They do seem like a classic movie theater candy
Here_4_the_INFO@reddit
Short answer, YES. So much so it caused an uproar when they "split up" back in 2012 (ahhh, simpler times)
In 2012, the candy brand Mike and Ike staged a highly publicized "breakup" over creative differences. The viral marketing campaign featured packaging with one of the names crossed out, claiming Mike left to pursue music and Ike left for graffiti art. The pair officially reunited a year later.
With that being said, you typically do not see them at the grocery store checkout any more, they are more of a candy isle item or movie theater thing nowadays.
And now I am craving some Mike & Ikes...
SideEyeFeminism@reddit
I loved them as a kid in the early 2000’s but I feel like they’re a movie theater candy
Appropriate-Food1757@reddit
Yes and they are my favorite. Jolly Joes are even better (all grape flavor) but these days you need to go to a specialty candy shop for that.
Loud-Necessary7824@reddit
These are my dad’s favorites!
BananaJelloXlii@reddit
Not as much as they used to, but you can find them at places like Dollar Tree (similar to your Poundland)
Vyckerz@reddit
They are in my house because my wife is obsessed with them and has been since she was a kid.
We don’t buy them super often, but I’ll buy them for her every once in a while as a little treat, and my son will sometimes give her a few packs for her birthday or whatever
Personally, I could take them or leave them
MeTieDoughtyWalker@reddit
Not super popular but not hard to find.
MentalChance4368@reddit
I was never a huge fan. I was on a Red rageous kick for couple months though.
macoafi@reddit
I don't think they're popular with my generation. My dad's a fan. Same for Good & Plenty.
RedneckBorealis@reddit
I think I had a few from a box 25 years ago? It's the kind of thing that you know exists, but you can easily go several years without being reminded that they exist. Theater candy is a thing, though. The only circumstance in which you see will see Raisinets or Sno-Caps is at a theater and I swear I saw someone eat a Raisinet once.
OkPerformance2221@reddit
I'm familiar with the name and packaging from seeing them in stores. I've never witnessed them being purchased, consumed, or discussed. I din't know what the candies inside the package taste like or look like. Somebody, somewhere, must buy them. Never thought about it before.
Able-Steak-2842@reddit
They are one of my favorites. Always well liked by most of my family that still have teeth.
FriesWithMacSauce@reddit
Can’t stand them
Untimed_Heart313@reddit
Mike and ikes are my second favorite candy, and super common too
hypo-osmotic@reddit
That particular "genre" of candy--unwrapped pieces that you shake out of a box--seems to be less popular than it used to be, or maybe it's just that my friends and I liked them more when we were kids than we do now that we're adults. The last time I bought a box might have been when I was in high school, almost 20 years ago. Mike and Ike seems to be one of the more popular brands of that unpopular style, though
Roam1985@reddit
Not particularly, no.
They're movie theater candy... but generally still less popular than Sno-Caps.
Boston_Brand1967@reddit
Hey I love original Mike and Ikes. My favorite candies, actually. Ive never heard anyone have anything bad to say about the classic flavors.
SensibleBrownPants@reddit
“loved or loathed”
Neither. They’re just kind of there.
sean8877@reddit
Yeah, movie theaters usually had them.
DResq@reddit
One of my favorite candies as a kid. But don't really eat candy anymore. I guess they are still popular as they've always been. Don't see why not. There's probably not some consensus on Mike and Ikes
dannybravo14@reddit
I'd say they're just average and largely go unnoticed in the candy aisle.
On the flip side, I could crush a 5lb bag of their sour Mike and Ikes. Tears up my mouth but I don't care.
And another fun fact: the creators of Mike and Ike have never publicly admitted the origin of the name for the candies. There are a few theories, but none confirmed.
TapDancingChicken24@reddit
I would say so. I like Mike and Ike's.
Good and Plenty's no.
Drslappybags@reddit
You can buy them at any grocery store. They even come in sour.
Buddhapanda75@reddit
They're everywhere, definitely at movie theaters. Different flavors, too, like sour and tropical. My mother and I love Mike and Ike's. Don't be foiled by their bastard step=brother Good 'n Plenty. That shit is garbage.
ThePurityPixel@reddit
They're so ubiquitous here in the U.S., no one really gets excited for them. They're just always an option at every supermarket.
wieldymouse@reddit
They used to be popular at movie theaters when I was a kid, but that was a long time ago.
Mueryk@reddit
My wife loves them and you can find them but they aren’t nearly as prevalent as other candies. I only notice them really because she likes them
Fangsong_37@reddit
I used to get them on road trips as a kid or from coin machines outside of stores/restaurants. They’re pretty good but not popular compared to M&Ms or Skittles.
warneagle@reddit
Mike and Ike’s slap. You can find them by the checkout line at the grocery store in most places. I haven’t been to a movie theater in years but they used to have them there too.
Roadshell@reddit
They're available and they're fine.
only_because_I_can@reddit
I loved them as a kid. I see them in stores and the theater now.
xansha3@reddit
I don't know anyone who actually likes them, but they are very common in any store that sells candy.
Adept_Carpet@reddit
I don't care for them myself but they're definitely around. I see them in pharmacies, grocery stores, etc.
Alpastor_Moody@reddit
Most stores have them. I don’t know how popular they are but for me they were always one of those Halloween candies that I never ate. Try a Five Below, you might find a pretty solid deal on them if they have them.
Fred42096@reddit
They’re not really seen as remarkable, I don’t think. Just a “background candy” for lack of a better term. I liked them as a kid
jessek@reddit
They’re sold here but I can’t say I’ve thought much about them in a long time.
kcoch5817@reddit
Walmart in my area carries them for like a dollar for a 4 ounce box. They are fine but I feel like it's one of those things I only see people eat around Halloween.
