(but yeah, it's hard to come up with a better example of the post-Nirvana / TMNT entertainment industry madness of thinking everything in the underground was a potential hit and just going for it)
It's not a masterpiece, but I love Lori Petty in this, and Naomi Watts as Jet Girl! Good stuff. To be fair, Tank Girl as a comic was more fun and iconic than, like, brilliantly plotted, so how much can I expect from the movie?
Everyone must see her story line in orange is the new black series...like idk how to describe her brilliance as a scitzophrenic inmate, truly top of the line acting from her.
Its just a one off guest star episode, but she just cant help acting amazingly. I always find the opening when shes hunting spiders so funny. You just know that in real life theyre just on a pile of rocks in some field somewhere, but she acts the hell out of it and really makes you believe shes on some barren planet, trapped, hunting for food just barely scrapping by.
I mean it's silly. The notion of a few select mega corporations harvesting all of the fresh water and other resources to build super intelligent computers while leaving the rest of us to fend for ourselves. What a silly concept. Good thing this is just the science fiction.
I caught an interview one time with Malcolm McDowell and he was talking about the poem he quoted that was something to the effect of 88 the burning eight...
And he was like it was great, it was meaningless and it was just the perfect thing for a pretentious asshole to say 😂
This movie holds the distinction for one of the worst tortures I’ve ever heard of. When they slide her down inside that shallow angled pipe whose diameter shrinks the further down it goes. They slid her in until it was just her shoulder that wouldn’t let her go down any further and just left her there, almost upside down, almost unable to breathe in silent darkness. Fuck that.
Great 1990s time capsule. The Let’s Do It musical number always made me cringe, but Naomi Watts was a fresh new face and Malcolm McDowell was top form. I still think about the rippers lines:
“I say we kill em.”
“I say we have crumpets and tea.”
“Tasty! All those in favour of crumpets and tea say I.”
“I.”
”Shut up! Ain’t gonna be no crumpets and tea!”
He films a sitcom where I live and I’m pretty sure I ran into him once but my delayed processing didn’t make the connection until he was gone.
I’ve since read he hates people brining up a clockwork orange, so I’m happy I didn’t recognize him because I probably would have started humming singing in the rain or something to be subtle while recognizing him and pissed him off. lol
Petty ran into the same brick wall that stymied Fairuza Balk's career: execs didn't see her as a romantic lead in mainstream films. In the 90s, success in a romantic mainstream film was the surest path to building a solid career. Being that roles for women were (and are) so few, the only other viable path was being in a surprise success that created an image (e.g., Kathy Bates in Misery or Juliette Lewis in Cape Fear). I'm sure Tank Girl was meant to be that for Petty, but it wasn't the success she needed at the time.
Mathis, on the other hand, was getting cast as the romantic lead in the early 90s, but none of them were hits. Had Pump up the Volume or That Thing Called Love done well, she probably wouldn't have been in a very minor role later in the decade in The American President. She's also talked about how River Phoenix's death really messed her up, as you would imagine.
Both should've been in way more stuff. But then so should have Fairuza Balk, Robin Tunney, Martha Plimpton, Lili Taylor, etc. The 90s did a shitty job of utilizing the talent available.
Tank Girl. This was the lead role her excellent supporting roles were leading up to and it was an embarrassing bomb for the studio. It's hard coming back from something that performed that badly this visibly.
31 years later I feel like this movie could be redone it was just okay it's first outing Petty did a pretty good job but it def was limited with the Tech at the time
If you want Hollywood to make big swings to have to accept a number of Tank Girls. It did make me cringe at the time because the previous year, "The Mask" made a fortune and I wanted to see more indie comic adaptions. I figured this meant Hollywood was going to slam on the breaks.
Lori Petty as Tank Girl was this heteroflexible's very first girl crush... 💙 The movie as a whole was so much fun and the rewatch value has not diminished over the decades.
In music theory, the Locrian mode is the seventh and final diatonic mode. Built on the seventh scale degree of a major scale, it is widely known as the most unstable and dissonant of the traditional modes due to its defining feature: a diminished fifth. - M5 Music.
yep. it’s the one mode we always say, as we are teaching harmonization of the major scale - we get to the seventh and hand wave it away saying “unless you’re a jazzer or avant guard prog rocker don’t worry about this one”
Fun fact: “Let’s Do It” was originally supposed to be a duet between Joan Jett and Greg Graffin of Bad Religion, but apparently there were licensing issues and they had to sub in Westerberg at the last minute.
Lori Petty in Point Break was a giant part of my bisexual awakening, and then she was Tank Girl, and that just killed off any vestiges of straightness I had left.
I think it sucks, honestly. I still watched it a bunch. I didn't know about comic movies at the time, and it came off as really confusing to me. even moreso with the blatant comic book visuals.
I had the really big oversized movie poster for this on my wall as a teen. My mom got pissed at me over something trivial and ripped everything off my walls, destroyed it, and threw it in the trash.
