I have a new to me Cal 22 that I’m excited to get out sailing on the Columbia. My issue is that I need to find people to sail with. I posted on sailpdx but it’s a pretty slow drip. Any sailors in the PDX area here want to get out on the water?
This weekend looks particularly great.

What marina do you sail out of?

Tomahawk bay and thanks, good recommendation!

I often race out of Tom Bay on Tuesdays and Thursdays, they’re both great days to run into people on the docks and strike up conversations.

I’d like to learn more and get involved. How do I get started?

I have been sailing on the Columbia for a couple of years now, I find less and less time to do it after getting a boat, unfortunately. I took a class with Portland Sailing and met a lot of great folks and learned a ton about the nuance of the river. I am not sure how new you are to sailing in general, but it is a great place to learn sailing, learn the river and meet people. The Columbia can be tricky in spots, it's tighter than it looks, the current is real and there is a lot of traffic. Always have your eyes out for barges, they are sneaky fast.

Good thoughts! I’ve been sailing 4 years now, mostly buoy racing on puget sound. Thought about going to island sailing school for a coaching session to get more familiar with the river

My wife did a couple classes at Island Sailing before finding Portland Sailing, so I was following her lead getting into it. She didn't love Island as much. Cliff at Portland Sailing is pretty set in his ways though and will likely require you to do his Basic 1 course but worth a call and maybe can jump into "Revisited" if you think you have the basics down. He's great and even wrote a book about the Columbia that you use as a pseudo-textbook in the class.

I had that same experience at Island, really turned me off through the course of my beginner class and I now regret the wasted years I could have been on the water. Just finished the beginner class with PSC, much better experience.

Where's the boat at? I'm working on my boat at Hayden if you want to go out after work if the wind is good some time.

Just remember that the Columbia river current flows to the sea!

sailing lasers in the SF bay and almost got washed out through the gate. We were with a yacht club club, so we all tied together and got dragged back in by the boston whaler.

Just go sailing, how many people do you need to run a Cal 22 in the 8-12 knots you're likely to see in PDX this weekend?

In theory just me but I’ve not single handed this boat nor actually sailed these waters yet (sailed puget sound almost exclusively). So some company seems prudent for now while I gain familiarity
