Things I wanted to give a shout out to...

I plan to turn 46 on Tuesday. Being in the later half of my forties is sounding scary! Help me remember all the fun things from our childhood to make me feel good about this age!
Here are some of mine:
- Tang. I mean, is there a better orange powdered drink mix out there?
- Beta. Those cute little tapes! I distinctly remember watching The Last Unicorn on repeat
- The sounds the doors made when someone logged into AOL instant messenger
- movie days in the classroom. There was NOTHING BETTER then when you saw your teacher rolling in that tv/vcr strapped to a cart
- going to the mall! Man that was like a cool girls day, an 8th grade date... hanging out at the mall was a VIBE
- 90210, My so Called Life, Wonder Years, TRL, Fresh Prince
- co-ed naked tshirts. I think I had a CO-ed naked cheerleading one. also PEACE FROGS
Keep it Going!

Public water drinking apparatuses, whatever you called them.

My folks were from Worcester ('Whistah' to you). That used to confuse my friends here in Maryland where they moved to right before I was born.

The thought of some rando blowing their hot breath on my shirt is appalling now, but I loved those hypercolor shirts

GivesYouGrief@reddit
I have one now! They've fixed that issue... I wash and dry mine all the time. Unloading the dryer and I'm like "what's this pink t-shirt? Ohhh, yeah, duh." and then it turns purple again as it cools off.

With the new Masters of the Universe coming soon, I am hoping it does well enough that studios consider making a Thundercats movie. How whackadoodle would a live action film look? 😆
ottersqueaks@reddit
I am hoping the same thing! Live action thundercats would be amazing.
relikter@reddit
A live action Mum-Ra that gives me nightmares for weeks? Yes, please.
BillyDMountain@reddit
I used to have those as swim trunks. They changed colour in water too.
CrazySporkDude@reddit
Turning 47 next week. Slap bracelets and tight rolled jeans. That’s how you knew you were the shit.
DCpurpleTart33@reddit (OP)
YAAASSS omg than we were totally the SHIT. Man those pinch rolled jeans with the guess triangle on the butt.
cloudshaper@reddit
If everything's coming back, I'm looking forward to the acid washed jeans, especially now that jeggings are super comfy.
DCpurpleTart33@reddit (OP)
I'm positive I will never wear acid washed again. I could barely do it then. But if floofy bangs come back??? Damnnnnnnn I'm your girl
CrazySporkDude@reddit
Thanks for the trip down memory lane! Needed that today. Happy birthday!
laurcar@reddit
Worn with 2 pairs of socks, in different colors.

Which were scrunched down and twisted slightly so that the sock ribbing would make squiggles.

Gotta have the squiggles!
CrazySporkDude@reddit
Straight up forgot about that. What a flashback.

You're still middle 40s! I was told it goes you're 40, then early 40s (41, 42, 43), middle 40s (44, 45, 46), late 40s (47, 48, 49) and then, 50! My husband crossed to late 40s today.. I'm still middle 40s this year.

DARE, where I was promised someone would give me drugs. I am still waiting for these free promised drugs.
raveybaby78@reddit
I am fucking dying and also waiting!🤣🤣🤣🤣
SeaSkimmer2@reddit
In the DARE program back in elementary school, I was the only student in my class who didn’t “graduate” from the program (and get the tshirt) because my bitch teacher wasn’t satisfied with the final essay I had to write for it and had me re-write it, which I didn’t do. So for the program “graduation”, my entire class was wearing their black “DARE” shirts on stage while I was told to simply wear a black shirt. Ironically, I was probably one of the few (if any) students from the class who actually never went on to do illegal drugs because of career goals.
TerpeneTiger@reddit
Hmmm, we did not have the weird waterfall thing. I wonder what the heck that was?
plantalones325@reddit
Our cafeteria did not have one. But then we went to a mathletics tournament (or model u.n. or something) at another school and our 7th grade minds were blown away by that glorious contraption. Suddenly everyone was graciously offering to take up someone else’s tray just to have another go at disposal line. There was this whole backroom setup where you went through doors and there was a conveyor belt and the waterfall and you got a jello cup at the end. It was THE hot topic on the school bus back and next day at school. It garnered a lot of new mathlete signups.
SeaSkimmer2@reddit
Ha, yeah you saw more about it than I ever did! Public elementary, middle, and high school all had one. Can’t find anything about it online for those not in the know…Basically like a 2-foot square cutout in a wall with a metal rim, with a rubber-flap partition draping down over the hole. Behind the partition was a dark, unlit space with a constant fast stream of water going down an angled chute aimed away from you which would whisk your disposed tray…somewhere…like a miniature dark flume ride going over the edge of the big drop on Splash Mountain.
TerpeneTiger@reddit
Thanks for the description. Sounds neat. That was the first non googleable thing I've seen in awhile. Kudos.
Notabagofdrugs@reddit
Yeah, what’s the waterfall thingy all about?
TuckerCarlsonsOhface@reddit
Daaaamn, someone went to a fancy school. Laser shows? Disposable trays and a waterfall cleaning system? WTF?
SeaSkimmer2@reddit
Ha, well it was the public school system in South Florida. The schools I attended in the 90s were no more than 10-15 years old at the time, so they would have had newer technology built-in. The laser show (set to popular music) appeared to be operated by an outside provider with the projector set up on a floor-stand, pointed toward I believe a large makeshift blank screen. We were told not to turn around and look at the projector. 😄 I have no idea how or what funding provided for the arrangement to do that at the local schools.
TuckerCarlsonsOhface@reddit
I went to public school in rural Maine, so our outside provider assemblies were basically another student’s dad dressed as a clown telling us to brush our teeth twice a day.
arrantknavery@reddit
Oh my god, the Total Eclipse of the Heart skit! Ours demonstrated the mOrTaL dAnGeRs of gateway drugs by having a bunch of people dressed as progressively harder drugs standing in a line with their backs to the audience, while our wayward protagonist went along the line from “Beer” to “Heroin” and DEATH tapping each one on the shoulder in turn to get them to… turn around.
Nervous-Shark@reddit
Omg ending a this is your brain on drugs school assembly with Total Eclipse of the Heart? Epic. Amazing. I love this. 😆

The plastic chain necklaces full of plastic charms. I had a few and I was always jealous of the girls at school whose charm necklaces were full.
Those charms were the ultimate fidget toys during church too.
raveybaby78@reddit
Oh my gosh I loved those charm necklaces!!!
cranberries87@reddit
I was jealous of the rubber/plastic “jelly” bracelets girls wore around the same time. One girl at my elementary school had them up to both elbows on both arms. I had a few, but I wasn’t willing to pay that much money to invest in that many.
ashre9@reddit
I used to loop mine together to make multi-colored configurations https://www.tiktok.com/@stacklettes_/video/7341543532450237742
The strange part is that I don't remember actually buying them. They just seemed to proliferate. Maybe I got them out of those quarter machines that dispensed the little hollow eggs with toys inside.
smacfa01@reddit
I still have my charm necklace AND jelly bracelets!!! I wonder how much they would go for on Ebay….. (not that I’d ever sell them. Just put them in the coffin when you bury me.)

OOOOHHH I almost forgot about the jelly bracelets! The girls who had a bunch up their arm were the coolest.

I'm also turning 46 this year and honestly 80s childhood years, 90s teen years, and 2000s 20s years was awesome! Making mixed tapes as kids was fun, but also burning cds as young adults and music being a social activity. Going to concerts and dancing the whole time because no phones. Playing Edward 40 hands and not worrying about videos coming back to bite you in the ass. Parties where you spend half the time doing prank calls!

My 40th fell on a Saturday, and I booked the weekend off work nearly a year in advance (because that is normally a time off blackout).
The upside is I was still off work because I was laid off! Couldn't even get groceries to make a desired meal because the stores were all bare at that time.

Tornado Drills in the hallway of the elementary school. Everyone head first face down against the wall and the teachers turned the lights out and had flashlights to mimic a power outage. Sounds kinda creepy now that I think about it. 🧐
darthduder666@reddit
I had a “hurricane drill” once for a tornado that touched down in my town.
I live up in the Northeast where it’s uncommon to get a tornado, and fairly common to get a hurricane occasionally.
I remember it getting super dark, and over the PA system the principal announced we would be doing an exercise that required everyone to remain calm called a hurricane drill.
We were then escorted down to the fallout shelter in the basement where we all stayed there until the storm passed. Shortly after my mom took my brother and I out of school because we were under a tornado warning for the remainder of the day.
At the time I thought it was strange we would have a hurricane drill, because school would have been cancelled if a hurricane was looming. Never thought about the fact it’s common to have a tornado drill in other parts of the country.
cloudshaper@reddit
We had earthquake drills and nuclear bomb drills. Which were pretty similar, get under the desks, face away from the window, and cover your neck. The difference was not automatically going outside afterwards.
BigFatBlackCat@reddit
Doesn’t sound like you had a drill, sounds like you had an active weather response.
darthduder666@reddit
That is why I put it in quotes. It most definitely wasn’t a drill. I think they didn’t want everyone to freak out.
mist_kaefer@reddit
They do active shooter drills now. ☹️
Notabagofdrugs@reddit
I didn’t want to upvote you because this fucking depresses me. Both my kids have had to do shooter drills and just what the fuck is wrong with our country?
GreenEclipz@reddit
Did you and your friends get into rollerblading, or hacky sack? Also in the 90s did all your friends have crappy first cars from the 80's?
MiniRems@reddit
My dad stopped with his "you don't need elbow/knee/wrist pads and a helmet for biking/rollerblading. Theyre notnl worth the money" after I broke my elbow rollerblading. We had got all the safety gear when I was healed up: Mom decided they were worth the money after the emergency room and orthopedic doctor 😆
cloudshaper@reddit
My dad was the opposite. If we didn't wear all the pads when rollerblading he would take the blades away.
cloudshaper@reddit
My car was from the 70's!
CrazySporkDude@reddit
I sucked at blading and hacky sack, but I drove the shit out of a busted ‘86 Jetta.
TuckerCarlsonsOhface@reddit
Hey, I passed my driver’s test in my friends 86 Jetta! My first car was a 66 Volvo wagon, which was interesting, but not really considered cool.
GreenEclipz@reddit
I remember people driving those Jettas forever! Mine was a '86 Mustang that I bought for $975!
CrazySporkDude@reddit
I’m a lover of all things Mustang. I could only have dreamed of a Fox Body when I was in school.
DCpurpleTart33@reddit (OP)
I never did the rollerblading thing but I will tell you that an evening at the rollerskating rink was the stuff middle school dreams were made of. I think I held my first hand there. My first car was a 1989 Chrysler Laberon. CONVERTIBLE. I was so cool.

Ha I almost said prank calling too. We were absolute monsters. My brother randomly dialed a guy one day who must have had mental issues. The guy screamed profanity instead of saying hello. Sooo of course we all had to take turns calling back. “Put your mother in a grave” was his favorite line. We called him The Screamer. Went to a party a town over like a year later and some kid says let’s call the screamer! Poor guy’s number got shared with no telling how many kids.

Was going to the mall a suburban or American thing? I grew up in Toronto and while going to the mall was something that happened, it wasn’t something we did. Movie days were the best days. In our English classes we always watched the movie after reading whatever book was required. Even the 1960’s Romeo and Juliet movie that shockingly for us teenagers had (very tame) nudity. My tiny Bible Belt hometown would never allow that nowadays!

I'll disagree with Tang, and I say McDonald's Orange Hi-C still reigns supreme, but I do miss ecto-cooler the most. Man I do also miss just skipping school and going to the mall though. No money, no plans, just a bus pass and a day to waste, lol.

OH man ecto cooler!

My HS government and geography teacher was a Frogman in the Korean War and supposedly trained the first group of Navy Seals. He was out a lot for some reason, so the TV/VCR cart lived in his classroom. There were two tapes that we watched over and over: a documentary on the Navy Seals training program and the Outsiders.
He would also punish kids that acted out in his class by having them stand in front of the room where he would touch a hidden pressure point to make them fall to the ground in pain. Oh, the ‘90s…

Why would you need nostalgia to “feel good” about not being an eternal child or dead?

I turn 46 in 25 days. My mind still has hard time catching up with the numbers, it makes no sense.
When I hear things like, oh so and so album or movie 25 years old, I think that’s impossible!! I’m only 28 years old.
But I do appreciate aging, the experience part, not the rickety joints and foggy memory part. Oh and fuck peri-menopause.

The Last Unicorn has and always will be my favorite book/movie. Still have my original VHS.

Shout out to that time on Jr high when a cheerleader announced the winner, Mike Hunt, for a full three minutes before another cheerleader came out to the middle of the gym to clue her in.
That poor girl. She exclaimed "you people are disgusting" and marched straight out of the gym. I genuinely feel bad fo her to this day (I had nothing to do with it, even had to ask my friend what was so funny about it). But damn if it wasn't funny.

LMAO right up there with Seymore Butts or Mike Rotch!

For some reason going through this list I remembered pongs! I had so many of those! Slap bracelets…jelly shoes ! I think I still have a scar on my foot from those.

These are the weirdest posts, very bot sounding, even though, apparently, allegedly, they're actual people
DCpurpleTart33@reddit (OP)
You should troll elsewhere if you have a problem with my exclamation points and a fun and silly nostalgia post in a sub for xennials with nostalgia. You probably never drank from a hose.

Nostalgia posts in a nostalgia subreddit are weird?
Verbull710@reddit
no, but the bot-sounding and expressive! posts with !! and ?? all over it are botty and engagement-farmy are

Carbon based life form or silicon based life form? Live and let live. That's what I say.
The AI bots didn't choose to be "born" any more than I did... As long as they don't create problems they're ok.
Also, as a vaguely human person, I bloody love the em-dash!!!
And triple exclamation marks...
And ellipses...
And Thundercats.
And The Raccoons.
And the theme song to Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors.
And starting sentences with "and".

I am personally a fan of 3 exclamation points!!! I think it gets the message across better, and I'm definitely real. My favorite punctuation is probably: ?!

I'm a real person! I am just all in my feels about having a birthday 😄

It's ok! Happy birthday! I hope you absolutely have a fantabulous day and you get all the presents and colonoscopy-prep stuff you ever wanted!
snow1868@reddit
I turned 46 on the 9th. It's not that scary. Currently my mid-life crisis is rereading the Marvel run of GI Joe comics which is just fun. Happy early birthday!

Miss those long nights on AOL in the chat rooms when the Internet was still new and wild for us.
Also miss those long hours of playing hack at school, in my parent's garage, and just about anywhere. Including in the back room of Dallas Hot Weiners in Kingston and watching a friend (RIP, dude) accidentally kick the serving tray out of the waitress's hands and sending food flying everywhere.
