Best "gimmick" tacos?
Posted by Aesyric@reddit | Dallas | View on Reddit | 69 comments
There are tons of great authentic street tacos around Dallas, and they are absolutely delicious, but i'm weirdly craving in the other direction this time
Shops like Torchys, Velvet Taco, Tacodeli, and other less authentic more gimmicky places. What is your favorite? The best item on their menu?
TMOverbeck@reddit
I miss Velvet Taco's breakfast hours, they had some real good offerings like the Farmhouse and the Waffle Taco.
burmaning@reddit
Fuzzys Tacos is pretty solid, their steak quesadillas are my go to. Potato soft tacos at Taco Bell are pretty slept on too.
However, I have a different question, where are the authentic taco spots at? I have yet to find any đ
NintendogsWithGuns@reddit
Where are you from? Do you never leave Uptown, Knox-Henderson, or the other transplant spots?
East Dallas and Oak Cliff are littered with authentic Mexican spots. Maskaras, Tacos La Banqueta, Mami CoCo, Birrieria Aguiñaga, Las Huastecas, Alebrijes Cafe, Mi Sazon Oaxaca, etc, etc, etc. Just go to Google Maps and search âMexicanâ in any of the neighborhoods that have actual Mexicans in them. Iâll never understand how people are missing these spots, unless theyâre simply never leaving their little white yuppie neighborhoods.
E-POLICE@reddit
Iâm going to get downvoted to an oblivion here but I whole heartedly disagree that there are an abundance of good tacos in Dallas.
Mascaras was awful and over priced. Tacos la banqueta wasnât very good either.
Out of all the places Iâve tried, Chilangos and Guapitos is probably the closest Iâve had to real Mexican tacos.
I lived in Mexico for a few years and my wife is from there. Not trying to be a dick this just has been my experience.
NintendogsWithGuns@reddit
Youâre arguing with a real life Mexican, homie. Dallas does indeed have good tacos, although I personally feel that Chilango is horrendously overrated. Mascaras has some of the best stuff in the state, especially considering they specialize in taco ahogados specifically.
E-POLICE@reddit
Sorry bro, not sure what to say. Just havenât found anything comparable to the tacos in MTY or CDMX.
burmaning@reddit
I study part time at SMU and work full time in Uptown, so you can infer what my peers look like lol.
Dawnzarelli@reddit
Get east of 75 or south of 30
MSHinerb@reddit
Iâm sorry but Taco Bell isnât the answer for best anything. Itâs just not. And thereâs probably thousands of authentic taco shops in Dallas.
notadamnprincess@reddit
Tacos la banqueta puro D.F. on Gaston is a pretty good start. Los Altos de Jalisco at Abrams and N.W. Hwy is also legit. But there are a ton of places in this town to get authentic tacos.
SubstantialPoet8468@reddit
Velvet used to have a picnic chicken w some nice cilantro crema and fried chicken skjn. Sigh
jordandavila88@reddit
I do not like velvet, but their chicken tikka tacos are a guilty pleasure of mine.
batfacecatface@reddit
Sounds like you like it then.
exanthem@reddit
Velvet is going the way of most P.E. owned companies. It's a shell of what it once was and will probably start closing stores within a year.
SubstantialPoet8468@reddit
Good
janetcw@reddit
I'm addicted to their brisket taco.
Jackieray2light@reddit
Not the same but they do still have backdoor chicken on Mondays for 20 bucks.
medisamurai@reddit
i know i know i know this sub has hated torchys and i used to take up for them, but i went to casa linda on sunday and they were terrible. Meat cold, tortilla room temp, marg bad, i was embarrassed i went it was so bad. queso wasnt even good.
so dallas reddit, ill give you this , you were right.
Apprehensive_Let_832@reddit
The bean and cheese tacos at Taco Joint are perfectionâwhen I want a bean taco nothing else will do. The seasoning and the bean to cheese ratio with their red salsa: chef's kiss.
The rest of their menu is serviceable but nothing to write home about.
heyyyyyooohhh@reddit
So random, but Remote Coffee off of Garland had the best bean and cheese tacos! however they make their beans, takes it to the next level.
PlantOG@reddit
I went to Taco Joint recently after not having gone in 5 years. I got a brisket taco and a bacon egg and cheese. The brisket was like boiled meat with zero seasoning or flavor. Would not recommend.
The bacon egg and cheese was delicious but itâs hard to make a bad one.
JPhi1618@reddit
I love the bacon egg and cheese breakfast tacos. Simple, but done well.
JusticeRhino@reddit
Taco Joint breakfast tacos are just fine.
TheRamblerJohnson@reddit
Torchy's is my go-to. The food, ambiance, and the bar line up well for someone like me.
Liser205@reddit
Tikka shack on Greenville! Indian fusion flavors on a naan taco
Mizishere@reddit
Not really a gimmick, but definitely not authentic:
Don Juanâs Romantic Mexican Food in Grand Prairie is not authentic or very good to be honest. But- that 5 beef taco plate absolutely hits.
Just crunchy shell, beef, lettuce, cheese, and served with taco sauce on the side. Super basic fast food tacos served on a paper plate and covered in foil. But, unlike Taco Bell, they stay crispy.
LittleChanaGirl@reddit
Never been, but I love the name!
Mizishere@reddit
It opened in 1966 and looks like it hasnât been updated one bit lol
foppishmanabouttown@reddit
And itâs $5.99 on Thursdays!!!
trickdog1999@reddit
SO goooood!!! đź

indo-mex is the next big thing.. paneer tikka tacos are the bomb
NintendogsWithGuns@reddit
I just call those gringo tacos. Not Tex-Mex, not Mex-Mex, just vaguely gringo stuff on a tortilla. Not a bad thing, just a thing.
Anyway, the absolute best is Resident Taqueria. It was started by a retired fine dining chef, who himself is also St Vincentâs brother. She spins sets there around the holidays. My Mexican wife and I really like them.
MSHinerb@reddit
Resident is the best. A mix of traditional and unique tacos.
space2k@reddit
Iâve called them âbaroque tacosâ going back to when Good to Go was in the Green Spot. Resident is a great answer, btw.

Resident Taqueria is wonderful
We have a family with all different kinds of taste
I prefer a basic steak taco while another family member likes cauliflower on a taco and a third likes short ribs
Basically, they have a revolving menu of various interesting and unique flavors
castawayyyyy342@reddit
Sushi taco from Sushi Dojo in Southlake! Definitely a gimmick but definitely delicious
ninjamike808@reddit
I just tried The Taco Spot and it was pretty good. Their surf and turf was wonderful and you can get it as a taco, burrito, nachos, loaded fries. Itâs crazy. Bit pricey though.
donutb@reddit
Torchys has an underrated good burrito
3wtflyrod@reddit
The Matador- off menu item
janetcw@reddit
Trashy Trailer Park!!! YUM!
JPhi1618@reddit
The Republican is good for a brisket taco, and donât forget the queso.
sefronia3@reddit
I love all their breakfast tacos. I moved away and I miss them lol
3wtflyrod@reddit
Velvet taco- Hot Nashville Tofu! I can put the hurt on them bad boys!!
SNOOPSxWEED@reddit
Salsa LimĂłn- El Capitan is pretty yummy
23apricots@reddit
FIRST of all, Tacodeli is not gimmick tacos. Torchy's is a little gimmicky, but more with the names than with the actual tacos.
Delicious_Hand527@reddit
Tin Star Cheeseburger Taco is still the goat. I miss that place.
There used to be an Indian food place that used tortillas instead of pita bread, in Richardson maybe? It didn't last long, but it was pretty wild. guy folded stuff like chicken tikka and biryani into tortillas sometimes with cheese.
dooroodooroodooroo@reddit
There was a place just like this in Coppell. So good.

taqueria la ventana or fried tacos from desperados usually satisfies my gringo taco craving

For gimmick tacos Velvet Taco or in the burbs try Crush Taco.
My faves used to be Tin Star. I worked there in college. Rip

Doritos Locos tacos. This is an under-rated answer.
Jackieray2light@reddit
Velvet Taco's Chicken Tikka Masala tacos are my favorite white boy tacos. They also have a good bacon Cheeseburger taco with wagyu.
mark_himself@reddit
Another vote for Resident Taqueria. They expanded semi recently and have a bar now\~!
Crying_in_99Ranch@reddit
Peking Duck is basically a Chinese taco if you want something with a different flavor profile
rickybobbyscrewchief@reddit
The best tacos at Torchys are the breakfast tacos. The Wrangler, the Ranch-hand, and the Migas tacos are great, even if they are a bit gringo-fied.
liberal_texan@reddit
I doubt it's what you're looking for, but every once in awhile I crave a Doritos Taco Loco Supreme from TC. Is it mexican food? No. Is it the absolute pinnacle of fast food? Maybe.
dfwfoodcritic@reddit
The answer is Resident but I just wanna make sure there is a mention for The Dream Tacos up north. It's similarly global fusion. There's a beef wellington taco. But the chef is from southeast Asia so the best things are Vietnamese or Cambodian stews put into tacos.
Mnudge@reddit
Yay, Resident!
IAmTurdFerguson@reddit
The Fish n Chips taco from Velvet is a 10/10. The mustard sauce on it is fantastic.
Metaworldrhys@reddit
The matador at torchys is pretty decent. Velvet taco is trash.
