Stellantis And Jaguar Land Rover: The Partnership No One Saw Coming
Posted by Repulsive-Club7866@reddit | cars | View on Reddit | 137 comments
One again Stellantis teaming up with the worst of the worst automakers in QDR. First it was Fiat, then Alfa Romeo, next it was PSA, and now it’s JLR like what could go wrong here. No wonder Stellantis will keep churning out endless one hit blunders.
Phosphorus444@reddit
Putting all of the West's terrible car brands under one roof is going end with them getting sold to China as a package deal.
Detroit-Funk@reddit
Okay, I smell some sort of China connection here too. Is this a way to get their product into the U.S. market?
Phosphorus444@reddit
Geely already has Volvo and Lotus in their portfolio. Can you imagine what'll happen if one China's big manufacturers gets all of Mopar?
FMJoey325@reddit
Do you think the US government would allow that?
Repulsive-Club7866@reddit (OP)
I would have a problem with Stellantis parking up with a Chinese brand as long as Stellantis doesn’t lead the development
nonaveris@reddit
Which means you get a 300 with an anemic 4banger.
wwwhatisgoingon@reddit
More likely it'll be a 600hp EV.
Stellantis has a Chinese partner, Leapmotor, who only build EVs and range extended EVs.
Wolfo93@reddit
Leapmotor
mbp_szigeti@reddit
I have some good news for you then
RessurectedAccount@reddit
Range Rover and Defender are terrible brands? They are literally some of the most desired cars in the world AND the most copied.
Ombortron@reddit
Respectfully, this tells me you nothing about mechanics or how cars actually work. Sure, many of their models are desirable but that doesn’t make them *good*.
There are some specific models (especially historically) that are actually good, some are built like tanks, but Range Rovers in general are literally *famous* for how poorly built and engineered they are, broadly speaking.
devilishpie@reddit
It sounds like "good" to you means reliable and inexpensive to maintain, but that's obviously not what your average Range Rover buyer cares for most. There's a lot more to a car then just its cost of ownership and reliability, hence why they're quite popular.
Ombortron@reddit
Reliability is one singular aspect of “good”. It’s not the only factor, it’s one of many. I don’t even mind if repairs are expensive, but reliability issues are a huge inconvenience. If I buy a car it’s because I want to *drive* it, not because I want to keep scheduling appointments with a mechanic.
I’m actually *more* picky about reliability in luxury cars, because part of luxury to me is having my car function properly because it is well designed. Luxury is not having my car sitting in a repair bay. If I wanted something unreliable I’d buy something shitty lol.
I agree with your comment on the whole though. Not everyone cares about reliability, and to be frank I don’t think the average person even knows that much about car reliability (compared to enthusiasts or people on this subreddit). And I’d accept a degree of reduced reliability for the right tradeoff (like a crazy performance car or a project car). But a minimum standard of reliability is important to me, especially for luxury products (which isn’t limited to vehicles, it’s applicable to all kinds of “fancy things”).
RessurectedAccount@reddit
Oh the irony. And this tells me you know nothing about the power of a brand. They are certainly not poorly engineered. So that tells me you haven't got a clue what you're talking about.
They are incredibly complex vehicles because they can do complex things that no other car on earth can do. I've been in a Defender crossing a river ffs with water up to the bottom of the drivers door. Don't go buying one thinking you are buying a Corolla. Because that is not what they are here gor.
Ombortron@reddit
lol providing a critique of their design doesn’t meant I don’t understand brands. I think you’ve lost track of what the original conversation was about.
RessurectedAccount@reddit
You aren't providing a critque of their design, you're talking about day to day reliability. You seem to think this is the only thing that matters. In luxury vehicles it isn't. Hence the power of the brands are why some customers are willing to pay 400k for bespoke Range Rovers. You don't understand brand or the luxury market and you don't have to. But don't pontificate about things you don't get. Worry about something else.
Ombortron@reddit
Dude you’re just filling your reply with strawmen. When did I say this is the only thing that matters? I didn’t. Part of design includes engineering designs, and some people value that more than others. I do. I’m well aware that reliability is more complex amongst luxury cars. That doesn’t mean I don’t also value engineering that is also more robust and reliable. Those aren’t mutually exclusive things. You’re drawing a lot of conclusions out of a simple topic.
One person implied the brand was terrible, or part of a terrible umbrella at least, and you said they weren’t terrible. I was just trying to talk about *why* some people think they are terrible or at least bad / overrated, which relates to their primary weakness (engineering and reliability).
Justame13@reddit
Until you look at them and they need a $3000 fix.
Which is just a more expensive version of stellantis's cars
devilishpie@reddit
I mean, they're luxury products. Their buyers aren't the type who care about running costs.
10000Didgeridoos@reddit
They don't even have buyers. Most are leased.
ElegantBiscuit@reddit
The buyer is the third owner 7 years in who gets a vehicle at 1/3 of its original purchase price. A buyer who understands that they need to go through pain if they want luxury for cheap. It works out for Land Rover because they will have already extracted that amount of depreciation through the lease, so its essentially as if they sold a new vehicle for sticker. Maybe even above sticker depending on the terms of the lease. At this point Land Rover is probably closer to being a long term car rental company who happens to manufacture its own vehicles.
shellexyz@reddit
Terrible cars?
RessurectedAccount@reddit
The Range Rover is probably the best all round car in the world period. But hey, let's all listen to "shelly" from Reddit. 😂
spiffykai@reddit
Yeah half a century ago
Immediate_Bee_6472@reddit
I rented a 22 range for two weeks coming from driving a alfa stelvio
BMW x2 2022-3 ?
Honda accord 2023
Range Rover is one of the best driving and handling cars for its size .. stelvio was nice but the range just was a level above literally one of my favorite cars ever
Dragonasaur@reddit
Well no shit, it's so fucking expensive, AND you rented it
A Stelvio is a fun SUV, not a comfortable SUV
The first repair bill alone will cost the same as a Honda Accord 2023 (aka the engine will blow)
by_a_pyre_light@reddit
What? What makes it "uncomfortable"? 😂
Immediate_Bee_6472@reddit
To be fair the warranty is 4-6 years ?
If the engine blows under warranty it wouldn’t cost me a dollar .. are u talking about older range rovers not under warranty ?
MarsRocks97@reddit
Now try owning it for three years.
Immediate_Bee_6472@reddit
I’ve owned a 04 m3 from 2019 .. my experience with failure rate is higher u than u assume
I have a friend who used to say the same thing about luxury cars bought a Honda 2016 that she had to replace the transmission before selling .. it had a new trans put in before she bought it she only had it for a year and a half ..she leases a 27’ 5 series rn
Cars are gonna break luxury cars breaking is not new i understand that regardless the Range Rover in top condition is one of the best driving cars money can buy
Ombortron@reddit
lmao, you know that a lot of people in an enthusiast subreddit are actually knowledgeable about cars? And even if you ignore that, go do your own research. Range Rovers are very well known for their massive reliability issues, generally speaking. This isn’t even a new thing.
Here, I’ll even help you with a quick internet summary:
“Land Rover and Range Rover consistently rank among the least reliable luxury brands, frequently placing near the bottom of industry surveys due to complex electrical gremlins and air suspension issues. While newer generations offer improved build quality, long-term dependability remains well below the industry average”
RessurectedAccount@reddit
OK. Well stick with a Camry. This isn't a car for you.
Ombortron@reddit
I have a nice fun car. Providing a critique about range rovers doesn’t mean I like Camrys. Your comment doesn’t even make sense. Sorry you’ve tied up so much of your ego with Range Rovers I guess?
RessurectedAccount@reddit
Sorry you waste time hating something you cant afford. Jealousy is so ugly.
Ombortron@reddit
Lmao dude you’re the one making up stuff in this “argument”, I never said I hated land rovers? But sure, anybody who critiques the brand you like so much should be jealous, right? I even acknowledged their good models. Are you 12 or what?
shellexyz@reddit
A colleague bought one new a couple of years ago. Had it three weeks before it was in the shop for a major, $10k repair. Under warranty, but still.
My stepsister had one for years and it was in the shop several times per year.
RessurectedAccount@reddit
I suppose your widowed neighbour from the next block had one and it blew up on her driveway 🙄
shellexyz@reddit
No. She drives an Odyssey and it appears to work fine.
BrewsedSloth@reddit
So? They’re utter trash that Lease Queens love to ride around and strut with. Horrible quality and value.
RessurectedAccount@reddit
Its not a problem you will EVER have.

PrpleMnkyDshwsher@reddit
>They are literally some of the most desired cars in the world
No they aren't.
RessurectedAccount@reddit
Yeah they are. Thats why they can sell some bespoke Range Rovers for 400k plus. Your personal taste does not equate to reality.
PrpleMnkyDshwsher@reddit
And how many of those are they selling? It sure as hell isn't keeping the company afloat.
RessurectedAccount@reddit
Up yeah they are. They literally made 2 billion last year. God you don't even know what youre fycking talking about lol
lunaticfridgeprime@reddit
Ok ok. Lmk how desirable they are after 50k miles.
10000Didgeridoos@reddit
That's a problem for the 2nd and 3rd and 4th owners who think they can buy them for $30k and keep up with $4,000+ of repairs and maintenance a year.
CashKeyboard@reddit
It's gonna British Leyland itself before it gets that far probably.
Feuerdrachen@reddit
But didn't the leftovers of BL still end up in Chinese ownership under SAIC after various other companies took the more interesting brands?
(Ford taking JLR and BMW taking Mini and Rolls Royce).

As opposed to the tool talking about a dead company from 50 years ago? Yeah I fucking am. This is how misinformation spreads
StrangeSmellz@reddit

RessurectedAccount@reddit
Nah. There's no one on this earth as thick as shit as an American on reddit. He absolutely believed it to be true. But please, do stay defending his ignorance. The Lords work and all that yeah?
kyonkun_denwa@reddit
This is possibly the most Reddit thing I've read all week. The need to be completely correct (driven by a deep seeded insecurity), to the point where the humour of the original post is sucked out of the room.
lee1026@reddit
That’s the theme of Stellantis. You have Fiat, which isn’t doing well, so you pair them up with Chrysler, which also isn’t doing well. And when that combo isn’t doing well, you pair it up with Peugeot, which wasn’t doing so hot.
And now the big box isn’t doing well, you add JLR.
One day, the combo will contain nearly all of the brands of today.

arsinoe716@reddit
They don't know what to do with Alfa Romeo and Maserati. How is Jaguar going to help?
strongmanass@reddit
This is like if you and I ran two gas stations across the street from each other. I notice that you have more customers going inside to buy more than just gas. I ask you what you're doing better than I am. You get a lawyer and make me sign an agreement before you share. You don't have to pay for my broken pump or my sign with the letter about to fall off.
RessurectedAccount@reddit
They aren't taking them over ffs. You people can't even fucking read.
arsinoe716@reddit
Where the fuck did I say they are taking over.
RessurectedAccount@reddit
You implied that teaming up with them, that somehow Jaguar would be their problem. It isnt and won't be.
arsinoe716@reddit
I didn't implied anything.
mini4x@reddit
My guess Land Rover will just dump Jaguar.
HoveringPorridge@reddit
Ah finally, British Leyland 3. Just what I've been waiting for.
Good things this could offer us: New Rover Vitesse with a hemi V8.
What it will actually offer us: Electric SUV.

HoveringPorridge@reddit
Decades ago the UK government decided to form a motoring conglomerate from several of the assorted car brand around the country.
It was comprised of a ridiculous nineteen brands. Because what were once rival companies were now managed by a the same board of directors it caused massive internal infighting.
Going as far as workers sabotaging certain cars on the production line.
It got dragged along for two decades before eventually imploding destroying almost every company that got dragged into it. And permanently crippling the UK car industry.
Only five of those 19 companies survived the fallout Austin, Jaguar, Rover, MG and LDV.
Austin fell in the '90s after a buyout from BMW to obtain rights to the Mini. Rovers subrands Land/Range Rover live on as they were purchased by Ford. And they were combined with Jaguar, Rover itself being dropped in favour of Jaguar. They now form JLR.
LDV and MG got sold off to the Chinese who now use both brands to market horrible shitboxes.
Tsupermacy@reddit
JLR is a cash cow. Even they don't sell a single car , they can continue to be exist. In car market being existing gives you edge . It's parent company Tata is a successful company with lots of cash , they will figure it out
strongmanass@reddit
It's just an MOU.
Here's the part that caught my attention:
If JLR are in talks to take over Stellanris factories, then some sort of IP agreement is a natural step.
Mr_Chode_Shaver@reddit

Great, get input from the people who created the new Defender. Looks like a unibody, IFS Jeep Wrangler is on the menu.

Well, recent car survey in the UK: Top 10 most unreliable cars of which 5 were Land Rover. They only sell 6 models😄😄. JLR has garbage build quality, garbage reliability, bad fit and finish materials inside, terrible depreciation. Stellantis is really going to know about problems now.
