In their quest to pronounce 12Cilindri correctly, they review the new Ferrari, and everything it has to offer.
At almost $1 Million CAD as specced, is it worth the crazy price tag.
Really enjoyed this video, please enjoy as well.
argent_pixel@reddit
If I dropped half a million dollars on a Ferrari and seats squeaked I would drive it back INTO the dealership.
Barca1313@reddit
Yea idk how people justify that. I get you buy a Ferrari for the engine, it’s sound and driving mechanics and heritage and all that but a squeaky plastic sound is just unacceptable imo. My used Volkswagen doesn’t even squeak like that and it’s like 1/20th the price.
erbot@reddit
Because Ferrari is a merchandise company that makes cars.
rugbyj@reddit
Never been a Ferrari "fan" by any measure, Zondas and Aston Martins were always my boyhood supercars, and I understand and agree upon the ridiculousness of how they see their brand... but their engineering is still too good to write them off as just a "lifestyle company".
Thomas notes it himself in the video, they've always had their quirks. Many supercars have similar fuckups where "cool design" ignored reality whilst in production.
zoobygainz@reddit
Also the panel gaps (hard top hitting aero) and tire rubbing from the factory is absolutely insane for this price point
argent_pixel@reddit
It's flat out embarrassing.
gogojack@reddit
Well that's the thing. Ferrari doesn't get embarrassed. Take the steering wheel retrofit. Instead of admitting that what they put in their cars was ass, they offer up the "opportunity" to spend even more money to get something that works better, but don't expect them to admit they were wrong.
Their longtime rival, Lamborghini, is at least a little more self-aware. While Ferrari puts out a car and insists it is the pinnacle of automotive everything, Lambo seems to say "look, we know this is ridiculous, YOU know it's ridiculous, but come on...if you're spending this much, you want ridiculous."
Abba_Fiskbullar@reddit
Lamborghini is owned by VAG, so they're a bit more reality adjacent than Ferrari.
Privateer_Lev_Arris@reddit
It's because people are far too forgiving of Italian shortcomings. They literally make garbage products and have a terrible work ethic but people always look past that for whatever reason. Run down Italian neighbourhood is "charming" or "rustic". lmao
caterham09@reddit
It's part of buying a Ferrari realistically. The qc on things from the factory has been bad for almost all of their history
klonkish@reddit
Look at their welds lol
Teledildonic@reddit
I've welded exactly once and most of my lines were better than that.
caterham09@reddit
Looks about right. People forget that prior to the original NSX coming out, it was just an accepted fact that a bunch of shit in your supercar wasn't going to function correctly
Quikstar@reddit
I wouldn't buy a car with this bad of build quality, let alone one anywhere close to this price.
SergeantBacon101@reddit
You should watch the Ammo NYC video on the 296. The factory paint is not in much better shape
argent_pixel@reddit
Just unbelievable.
Attainted@reddit
Double that, because it's a drop-top.
Prestigious_Idea4462@reddit
welcome to supercar town. Floor mats and shit not aligning. Bolts falling out and A/C not working. Any time I see a McLaren I wonder how long the shop let them have it
Standard-Juice-3738@reddit
Definitely. I get that in my Emira

I think this car is always going to struggle a bit, namely because the 812 exists already for less money and is better looking.
apintofpantaloni@reddit
New car drives much nicer (apparently). I had the pleasure of owning an 812 for a year, did a few thousand miles in it, tracked it, roadtripped it, etc. It's not so great on the turn in and chassis side of the house. I personally found it quite cumbersome and a bit of a pain. Turn in is quite.. err.. variable.. and the damping was just not quite there. This is apparently much evolved. Not tried it yet though!
Like all Ferrari series production V12s, these will depreciate. The spiders will do better than the coupes, but they'll all depreciate. They're building buttloads of them. This is not a value propostion vehicle re value retention unless you're the 2nd or 3rd owner.
My personal pick of the bunch is F12. Much prettier than 812, handles nicer, and has that fantastic powertrain still. Driven one on track and sold my 812 not long after..
uber_neutrino@reddit
Having owned both the F12 and the 812 I think the 812 is the better driver. The F12 is definitely an amazing classic look though and I would not fault anyone for buying one, they are a bargain at current prices.
apintofpantaloni@reddit
I just did not like the way the 812 turned in at all, whatever they did with the RWS made it a little finnicky to judge on corner entry if you were on it, it's like the ratio was never the same twice. I like a pointy front end which is why I really enjoy tracking the lightweight mid engined cars, but this felt a bit contrived and out of place to me on the front-mid V12 grand tourer.
uber_neutrino@reddit
Yeah I get what you are saying it's a really reactive car. Ferrari likes to do this in general. It's a big heavy car and them biasing it like this makes it feel more nimble, but also kind of nervous. Really the thing just wants to go really really fast in a mostly straight line.
V12MPG@reddit
In the US market at least the days of the bargain F12 appear to be over for now. The cheapest one on AutoTrader is now asking $346k for a 2014 30k mile black car with comfort seats. Has fully overlapped with Superfast pricing (F12s asking $346-500k and 812SF asking $325-565k).
uber_neutrino@reddit
Damn, I haven't been paying attention. You could pick them up low 200s a while ago.
Still a great car although I found the chassis a bit bouncy.
V12MPG@reddit
The value bump just happened very recently. Hard to tell what’s real in the car market these days. Obviously actual transaction prices are lower on both cars. Maybe they drop back down, who knows. Glad to not be trying to buy right now. Everything has shot up and it doesn’t seem sustainable.
uber_neutrino@reddit
Oddly I've been thinking about selling my 812. I wonder if it would be a good time to sell it.
BrunoEye@reddit
I'd love to own an F12 one day, my only issues with it is no mass produced convertible and the badge.
apintofpantaloni@reddit
I was the same as you tbh. I went 720S, then Huracan Perf as I also did not want to do the Ferrari thing. Then I bought my first one to see what it was all about, and you quickly realise all the issues you have with the badge are your own and the wider world really doesn't care and neither should you. And, in all fairness, the cars themselves are absolutely sublime. I stuck with them after that, had nothing else in between. Just sampling different stuff from different periods. They're really good vehicles if you enjoy driving and can put the badge aside. I've tracked mine and now done cumatively around 30k mi in the last 2.5yrs over a few different models. Speaks to me!
Not meant to convince you, just sharing my own little experience with all this stuff
BrunoEye@reddit
If I'm lucky enough to one day afford it as a 4th car then maybe, but I don't see myself loving it enough to get one before then.
My real dream is to build my own car, but that might be even more naive.
Worried-Pineapple808@reddit
Can't buy a new 812
caterham09@reddit
Yes, but used 812s are pretty easy to get and most all of them have barely been broken in.
Also a non-insignificant portion of people interested in this car probably also own an 812 already
topkik@reddit
People who would buy these aren't looking for a bargain on a used 812. They want the newest Ferrari
caterham09@reddit
I won't pretend to know the mindset of multimillionaire Ferrari buyers. I do think it would be a tough sell though for a rich enthusiast who's done any amount of looking. For the price of this car, you can have a barely driven 812 and a 458 to go with it.
I think for a lot of wealthy buyers, that's going to be a more attractive option
uber_neutrino@reddit
See my post above. Basically the price went up a lot and the car isn't better (arguably worse). Simply doesn't pencil out for mere millionaires.
unatleticodemadrid@reddit
Also doesn’t pencil out for more than just mere millionaires either. Just no interest in playing the Ferrari game.
uber_neutrino@reddit
You must be playing to some extent with a 296 Speciale no?
PM_ME_YO_TREE_FIDDY@reddit
The people buying this shit aren’t buying their « once in a lifetime midlife crisis » Ferrari, they truly don’t give a shit about money, but they do care a lot about appearances.
IExtremelyNeedCoffee@reddit
They want it or they need it to be considered for the next special Ferrari
FMJoey325@reddit
Wild because the F12 is still the best looking of the lot.
uber_neutrino@reddit
This is true. And I ordered mine with my specs from the factory. But it is getting long in the tooth (7 years!).
MaraudingWalrus@reddit
I can't but a new 12Cilindri either
SerialExperimentLean@reddit
I think this is much better looking than an 812 personally
BrunoEye@reddit
Yeah, it's hideous. This is better, but the F12 is still their best looking V12 in quite a while.
BrandonNeider@reddit
This car is going to end up in the bucket of "buy one of these to get one of the ones you really want"
sharktoucher@reddit
I think Ferrari names peaked with the Testarossa and its just been downhill ever since
LongjumpingLock5875@reddit (OP)
There was the LaFerrari haha.
Not much different from 12Cilindri.
Ford should release a car named "TheFord", or "8Cylinder"
R_V_Z@reddit
Don't forget Ford releasing The Ford Henry.
Privateer_Lev_Arris@reddit
Another relatable vehicle for the poors
Unable_Peak_748@reddit
Its evolving, just backwards.
Fishinabowl11@reddit
The QC issues like the wheel rubbing on the liner, the squeaking console, the roof mechanism clacking against the trunk when putting the top up and down...these kinds of problems are just not acceptable at the price point this car is at. This thing costs as much as some homes. It needs be coming off the lot flawless.
Not to mention it looks like a platypus.
uber_neutrino@reddit
For me when they offered my one the price was just kind of .. not worth it? Probably means I don't have enough money.
But basically to get a new 12c I would have to give them my Superfast + another Superfast worth of money. The Superfast is the better looking car... no thanks.
Designer_Subject6010@reddit
The quality control issues are mind boggling. It’s not like they started building cars two years ago. I think they just don’t give a shit because they know their customers will buy it anyway.
happyevil@reddit
More than most homes*
Average home price (in the US) is a bit over $500k with median sitting close to $400k
8BallsAndBaseballs@reddit
The wrinkles on the leather behind James' head bothered the hell out of me for some reason, it's just cheap looking on top of all the other obvious QC issues. I also don't quite understand Ferrari's design language here, I guess they're going for some sort of retro look with the front end but it just doesn't do it for me. The front end just kinda screams Nissan to me.
