Scored a 35% off at Farmhouse Inn in Sonoma. How do I stretch my budget around it?

I’ve been playing Pop Slots and I just unlocked 35% off the best flexible rate plus a waived resort fee at Farmhouse Inn in Sonoma California. The discount knocks the room cost down significantly so my main remaining costs are food, transport and activities once I’m there.
I’m driving from East Tennessee, so it’ll be a long haul out to California but I’m treating it as a road trip and plan to use a couple of free/cheap nights along the way to break up the drive.
For the Sonoma leg itself, I’ll be based at the Farmhouse Inn which is a pretty upscale property so the room itself is the splurge. I want to keep everything around it as lean as possible.
Question:
Sonoma vs. nearby Santa Rosa as a daily base for food/errands? The inn is in Forestville which is pretty rural. Is it worth driving into Santa Rosa for cheaper grocery runs and meals or does Sonoma town have affordable options worth staying close to?
Free or very cheap outdoor activities in the Sonoma/Russian River Valley area? I know Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve has a low day use fee. What else is worth doing that won’t cost much? Are tasting room fees avoidable. I want the wine country experience without paying $30/$50 per tasting.
Dates would be something before August 2026 since that’s when the reward expires. Any tips?

Also redeemed the stayed at Farmhouse Inn thru popslots last fall and it lives up to the hype!!! The room alone made the whole trip feel special without needing to do much else. You don't need to spend a ton around it. The Russian River area and Armstrong Redwoods carry the vibe on their own.

That’s so good to hear!! Nice that you stacked up your popslots points for this. How long had you been playing before you unlocked it? And did you get the resort fee waived too or just the room discount? Trying to figure put if there’s a way to grind it faster before my booking window closes

Santa Rosa will save you a lot on food and groceries compared to Sonoma town. I’d lean into the Russian River side for free stuff, too. Armstrong Redwoods, river spots near Guerneville, and the coastal drive toward Jenner are all great without spending much. Smaller wineries also tend to be way less aggressive with tasting fees.

Forestville is actually a pretty great location for a Sonoma County vacation. You’re right between Santa Rosa and the coast. A lot of the beaches have free parking. Grocery Outlet in Santa Rosa for cheap picnic food. There’s a Wednesday night market every week in downtown SR. Mitote food truck park for affordable great Mexican food. There’s vineyards and local wine literally everywhere. You’re gonna have a great time without even trying. Don’t plan everything out, leave room for surprises.

Gas is $6.60/ gallon over here and goes up during summer months. Something to note.

For cheap food in the area, the Sebastopol Farmers Market (Sundays) is great for affordable fresh produce and snacks. Also check out the food trucks that rotate around Santa Rosa. A deli rotisserie chicken from Oliver's Market in Sonoma or Santa Rosa can easily carry you through two meals and keeps you well under $15/day if you supplement with simple grocery staples back at the room. Forestville itself is tiny but charming. Don't overlook just walking the Russian River area for free. Early mornings by the water are genuinely beautiful and cost nothing.

Sonoma wine country on a budget is totally doable if you're strategic. Santa Rosa is your best friend!! it's 20ish mins from Forestville and has a Costco, multiple grocery chains and way more affordable restaurant options than anything in Sonoma town proper. Armstrong Redwoods is absolutely worth the small day use fee and feels just as majestic as anything you'd pay $35 to enter elsewhere.
On tastings: a lot of smaller family run wineries along Westside Road and the Dry Creek Valley don't charge tasting fees or waive them with a bottle purchase. Call ahead and ask. You'd be surprised how many are happy to accommodate.

I suspect flying will be cheaper than driving given the price of gas these days
