What word looks wrong the more you look at it?

I have SO MANY!! I'll start with Cabbage. It looks ok the first few times...😮🤔
GeneralCauliflower92@reddit
Crisps
passionfruit62022@reddit
Eighth
Sixforsilver7for@reddit
twelfth
Arglezhbonk@reddit
And fifth
Sixforsilver7for@reddit
Somehow this annoys me less. I cannot explain why.
ReallySmallFeet@reddit
What about eighth?
I've heard people pronounce it both as "ate-th" and "ay-th".
Sixforsilver7for@reddit
I’ve never thought about it and won’t give it any thought after this for my sanity but as someone who cannot handle f sounds or th sounds twelfth is the worst. I dont understand how I can handle fifth but maybe it comes up less and maybe I rarely see it spelt. Damn Shakespeare for writing any plays.
ReallySmallFeet@reddit
Ha, I appreciate the response. :)
Also re: your username...
...gold. Eight for a secret never to be told?
Sixforsilver7for@reddit
Well yes exactly apart from the fact I messed up the numbers :)
exhausted-pangolin@reddit
Fifthly, filthy fifth-fief thief's teeth
_FreddieLovesDelilah@reddit
It’s such a goofy looking word lol haha guys look at the goofy guy
Decent_Confidence_36@reddit
I’ve just sat saying the word over and over again for 30 seconds because my brain wouldn’t let me believe that’s the real word
Ok-Ebb5960@reddit (OP)
Pronunciation counts for Alot!!! 😏
1Marmalade@reddit
Alot looks wrong as it is always two words.
A little A lot.
ema_l_b@reddit
That word makes my brain lisp
Fleder-maus@reddit
Awkward always looks really awkward to me
Sensitive-Vast-4979@reddit
I always feel as if theres a missingle letter after the k am that no one pronounces like in lots of words
Vampyrelol@reddit
Same with "weird"
It breaks the I before e, except after c rule, which is weird.
D0wnb0at@reddit
I’m dyslexic, only mildly, but that word really fucks me over. I try to spell it 10-15 times and word or iPhone doesn’t know what I’m trying to say so I have to google it and google is so much better at interpreting my dyslexic spelling.
I always try to spell it arqward, arqwerd, arequard, arqwerd, awqward,
Some_Ad6507@reddit
I like spelling it out loud
Ok-Ebb5960@reddit (OP)
But it reads just like it should?! (Forgive me Jamiroquai ) 😔
TheBurras@reddit
Autopsy
your_swindon_lot@reddit
The name ‘Siobhan’
(Lovely name but doesn’t sound how it looks)
DECKTHEBALLZ@reddit
Because it isn't English..
NuclearMaterial@reddit
Wrecks my head when people just don't get it. It's not spoken so much across the island any more but it is it's own language. Not even in the same language branch as English.
When they struggle with a French word, or a Spanish word they're like "that's fair, it's in a different language." But Irish shits people up "WhY caNt YoU SpeLL iT NoRmAlLY!?" It is normal, go away.
crubeens@reddit
It does sound how it looks, it’s Irish so doesn’t follow rules of English. S and i make a Shh sound. There’s no letter V in Irish so the combination of B and H makes a V sound and the A should have a fada (accent) over it, á = aw. Similarly why Niamh is pronounced with a V, MH makes a V sound too
your_swindon_lot@reddit
Thank you for explaining it.
crubeens@reddit
No problem, also fair play for spelling it right 😂
Silvagadron@reddit
Try Caiomhe!
crubeens@reddit
A lot of Irish names become easier to pronounce when you know that ‘mh’ and ‘bh’ make a V sound
rice_fish_and_eggs@reddit
I dont want to be rude but to me that looks like squid rings.
SpudFire@reddit
Saoirse. Honestly I think the Irish just make this shit up for a laugh and to confuse us
Routine_Lychee9923@reddit
It's an Irish name, why would the goal be to make it more palatable to the Anglo ear?
feckarse-drinkgirls@reddit
literally a Lee Mack bit
terryjuicelawson@reddit
It does, as it is in Irish.
Routine_Lychee9923@reddit
Sick of folk saying Irish and Scottish names are spelled wrong or weird. They're not English names! They are spelled as they should be in the language from which they originate! It's fine if they can't pronounce it but once they learn I'd prefer not to be laughed at or told I'm wrong
Routine_Lychee9923@reddit
It sounds how it looks in the language it originates from. It isn't an English name so of course it doesn't make much sense to an English eye or ear.
slimdrum@reddit
I think that's the Irish Gaelic spelling, my cousin shares the same name and I always have to double check the spelling for Christmas cars etc
Tennis_Proper@reddit
You’re giving cars for Christmas?
Can I be your friend?

Oof auto correct strikes again I wish I could settle this vendetta it has against me!

Ok-Ebb5960@reddit (OP)
I thought the same thing when I 'saw' the name Mauve!! Even now, it just doesn't make sense?! 🤨

ProfessionalTap2400@reddit
That’s French, so French spelling! It just means purple!
emiliewarrendahmer@reddit
And Niamh
AlucardVTep3s@reddit
First time I read that name was in Twilight Breaking Dawn and I pronounced it See-Bow-Han😂
Then years later in 6th form I had a form tutor with the same name and LUCKILY she stated her name when she introduced herself before I could embarrass myself by asking.
Choccybizzle@reddit
Growing up going to a catholic school I just see that as a perfectly normal spelling!
Electus93@reddit

Mhairi as well (which i have seen pronounced as Mary, Marry, Marie , and Varrie - all by people actually named Mhairi...)
harriscot57@reddit
