Lore / Lore episodes scared me as a kid, still kinda do at 38! Am I the only one?

Massive props to Spiner for being such a great actor.

Often Wrong’s got a broken heart, can’t even tell his boys apart

The Lal episode destroys me now, as a father.
handlerofdrones@reddit (OP)
Just made a post about the other day. The bit about his hands moving faster than the admiral can see.
hokie47@reddit
Good trek will do that. As your lens changes over age the episodes hit different. Why people are still rewatching it 60 years later. DS9 and TNG are the best. To beat a dead horse most Nutrek besides a few SNW episodes don't have this and are totally forgettable garbage.
davwad2@reddit
I rewatched TNG for it's 30th anniversary and there were some episodes where I definitely missed the innuendo. The scene that stood out the most to me is the turbo lift scene in The Host.
Dr. Crusher, Odan (a trill), and Data are in a turbo lift. Crusher and Odan are talking about their relationship and it goes right over Data's head. Seeing it as adult made me realize how child-like Data was in that moment. I laughed so hard because I missed the same thing Data did when I watched it as child all those years ago.
the_toast_exemption@reddit
I 100% could not ever rewatch that episode now that I'm a parent.
Spaceghost_84@reddit
My kid is autistic and i think of that episode frequently. They have a lot of little moments that remind me of Lal. They feel so much so deeply it makes me wonder how the rest of us can have such little empathy by comparison.
45runs@reddit
Yep that episode kills me. Brent Spiner is incredible in that episode.
LovesDeanWinchester@reddit
I despised Lore. To me, he was played by Brett's twin...not Brett himself!!!
spacetr0n@reddit
Spiner is in a league all of his own.
twolfhawk@reddit
As a kid watching Brent Spiner as Data is loveable and always felt corect. Seeing the same face be a villain..it was creepy af
Darkling183@reddit
I agree. That's the most unsettling thing about it, in my opinion. My brain is so hard-wired to trust Data's face and find him a reassuring presence that when Brent is playing Lore, it's too much cognitive dissonance.
twolfhawk@reddit
Just watch Brent on night court....
Darkling183@reddit
Oh, it's fine when he's not in the white makeup. I don't see him as Data then.
calculon68@reddit
Lore annoys more than scares me. Too much maniacal mustache-twirling evil, almost like a mirror-universe counterpart.
Lore would've been scarier if he simply lacked empathy/awareness and killed indiscriminately, and just didn't understand.
HoundTakesABitch@reddit
I just hate how when he takes Data’s place, it’s super obvious that it isn’t Data and no one notices but Wesley.
actually3racoons@reddit
It cracks me up all the times everyone brushes wes off, then due to everyone being written into obliviousness the teenage boy saves every soul aboard the enterprise.
He has incontrovertibly saved the ship a few times, it's upsetting he's got no decorations by s3
UESPA_Sputnik@reddit
And once the Crushers finally figure it out, they don't even bother to tell anyone and get themselves into danger by facing Lore alone.
Spaceghost_84@reddit
Look I’m always down with beverly showing that shes just as good with a phaser as she is with a laser scalpel. That woman can do no wrong. The rest of the universe is wrong.
UESPA_Sputnik@reddit
I mean, the universe is just a spheroid region 705 meters in diameter anyway.
MindlessVariety8311@reddit
I hate that episode! I much prefer the one where she has sex with a space ghost.
der0hrwurm@reddit
Shut up, Wesley
_fly-on-the-wall_@reddit
it is so ridiculous!!!
abornemath@reddit
Dr. Soong: “where’s Data!?”
Lore in mocking tone: “𝘞𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦‘𝘴 𝘋𝘢𝘵𝘢.“
JoeCensored@reddit
Spiner is such a good actor, playing characters so fundamentally similar but so different. You can tell which he is just by his facial expressions.
Either_Umpire9411@reddit
The sins of the prophet were valiant and bold, and quite unaccustomed to fear. But of all the most reckless or so high am toldddd, was Abdul Abulbul Ameer. I always loved that little ditty. But I could never get the cadence quite right. thank you father
Haruspex_Rex@reddit
I always hated those episodes. Seemed ridiculous to me, as far as plotting.
DragonflyGlade@reddit
Why would Soong, after building an android who turned out to be evil, then build a good one, but with the exact same face and body—visually indistinguishable from the original evil one who scared the colonists? Especially if you kept the evil android’s pieces lying around to be reassembled by whoever happened along? Not planning ahead on even the most basic level, eh? Soong may have been a brilliant cyberneticist, but in terms of common sense…
Haruspex_Rex@reddit
And why wouldn’t Star Fleet completely dismantle and destroy the evil robot once it found out about it? Or imprison it forever? To that, considering the number of times Data was taken over by aliens or Lore, why is he still in service? That’s a problem for the humanoid members of Star Fleet, too.
WillingArm2463@reddit
Good News: It's a Data Episode.
Bad News: It's a Lore Episode too.
toastedclown@reddit
I agree and feel the same way. I also think that having Brent play every male Soong is hilarious and brilliant. They are all the same and all different.
Data is clearly lawful good, and everyone else is Chaotic--something. Evil (Adam, Arik, Lore), Neutral (Noonien), or Good (Altan).
Fabulous-Sea-1590@reddit
I missed Brothers when it first aired and I'd been so excited to see it.
I remember my friend recounting the plot to me on the playground. I asked who played Data's dad and he said he thought it was Billy Crystal.
I guess because Soong kinda looks like Miracle Max? All the things in life I've forgotten and that random moment has stuck with me for over 30 years.
toastedclown@reddit
Noonien is heavily made up to look old but the big tell is that Lore inherited his speech patterns and mannerisms.
CrazyAlfalfa4298@reddit
What episode is he in Picard s3
toastedclown@reddit
Episode 8: "Surrender"
ilDuceVita@reddit
Lore has always reminded me of my older brother.
I am not less perfect than Lore. Despite how much he's tried to convince me I am.
NarmHull@reddit
Whenever Brent Spiner smiles it kind of freaks me out.
manlybrian@reddit
The only Data specific thing that scared me as a kid was when he would open up his fingernail.
Fabulous-Sea-1590@reddit
Arg. I felt this comment.
Moliza3891@reddit
Same. But still does as an adult.
Absentmindedgenius@reddit
I always wanted more out of them. Lore has no character arc. He has an interesting backstory, but they just use him as a mustache twirling villain that shows up out of nowhere every once in a while to antagonize Data.
He really reminded me of KARR vs. KITT.
multificionado@reddit
Not really. I'm around your age, and few things scare me (those that do include the banshee from Disney's Darby O'Gill and the clown from Brave Little Toaster).
For me, Lore's a scene-stealing psychopath, but I can understand where you can be creeped out by Lore.
_byetony_@reddit
Hate them
JugOfVoodoo@reddit
Lore deserved to be the villain of a movie. "Picard" season 3 did a good job of closing out Data & Lore's story, but I wish "Nemesis" had been about a Sela / Lore team-up.
lyidaValkris@reddit
Spiner has good range, and Lore was proper terrifying. As an actor, I be he loved playing his own evil twin.
kathakana@reddit
He has said in interviews that he loves playing baddies as there’s always another side. He was brilliant in the series Outcast.
colmatrix33@reddit
The idea of an evil android in real life is terrifying.
DCLascelle@reddit
Yes.
Diver-1Doc@reddit
Brent Spiner could do a great “evil” face.
handlerofdrones@reddit (OP)
Data’s voice is calming and nice
Lores voice was diabolical
VGuyver@reddit
It's a cheery fake friendliness. It's predatory.
handlerofdrones@reddit (OP)
Hell, even his name is unsettling.
krampaus@reddit
the name lore definitely has a sinister ring to it
shadowscar248@reddit
Well that's kind of the point. Data is logical and explains the world as it is in a methodical way to allay fears and allow understanding and progress. Lore is often illogical and usually instills fear and is destabilizing due to lack of clarity.
JAS0NDUDE@reddit
With data we are introduced to a character that strives to be human. But, he does lack some of the worse traits of humans: lying, violence, corruption, etc. He is pretty much morally perfect except with outside influences.
Then... We are introduced to Lore who has no problem emulating the darker parts of humanity, WITH all the strength, speed, and efficiency of data.
Yea... He's fucking terrifying.
Snailfreund@reddit
He's completely unhinged and can rip your arms off in a split second.
Key_Disaster_2309@reddit
Absolutely terrifying. Memorable and mesmerising.
Old_Mycologist1066@reddit
Lore was definitely a very twisted psycho character that could Never be trusted. Brent said he based him on his older brother. Wow he did a great Job portraying Both Data and Lore. He was scary....
jdlyga@reddit
Star Trek has such good villains. The Cardassians, for example. They’re so polite, smart, meticulous, outwardly friendly. And yet so evil but you can’t prove it.
socgrandinq@reddit
Bajorans could prove it
headius@reddit
Dude, spoilers.
astroaxolotl720@reddit
Lore is just genuinely unsettling lol.
WideEntertainment942@reddit
Scared... Nah.. I love brents skills in acting
kenny-dal@reddit
“The sons of the Prophet were valiant and bold,
And quite unaccustomed to fear,
But of all the most reckless, or so I am told,
Was Abdul Abulbul Amir.”
ShortBussyDriver@reddit
I've always liked that little ditty.
_fly-on-the-wall_@reddit
no, i love lore episodes!
elevencharles@reddit
I think Spiner was the most talented actor on TNG. No shade on Sir Patrick Stewart, but I think Spiner has more range, and ironically, playing an android really allowed him to show it off.
syzerkose@reddit
Right up until “Are you prepared for the kind of death you’ve earned, little man?”
I just could not take Lore seriously after that.
enderforlife@reddit
He’s like an infinitely strong insane person. It’s scary for sure
shunkplunk@reddit
When Data has the emotion chip and is laughing uncontrollably, burned into my brain. The revolving doors of the Royale in the darkness also made an impression.
mz_groups@reddit
He's malevolent, creepy and superpowered. What's not to fear?
Substantial_List_223@reddit
It’ll always be creepy and weird ass
bebopmechanic84@reddit
Not exactly sure what it’s doing, but it’s doing something!
