ULPT: How do I get photos off my work computer?
Posted by Blair_Bubbles@reddit | UnethicalLifeProTips | View on Reddit | 42 comments
I work for a major USA bank. If you live in the USA you know of us or bank with us.
That being said I'm a designer and I use finished designs and irl finished products for my portfolio. I have done it at all my jobs, no worries, it's great to have finished irl photos. I get them emailed to my work email from my marketing managers around the country when we sponsor an event.
The issue is I cannot send it to myself via work email to personal email. I can't open teams or my email on my phone and use that as they are blocked from sending files and photos. I can't screenshot files from teams or my email on my phone as that is blocked too.
I cannot use a USB port as I get a nasty auto email and it ccs my manager. I cannot use Creative Cloud as it is locked down and I cannot upload photos to it.
What can I do to get these photos? :(
Harry_Gorilla@reddit
I use discord and teams for this, but I’m able to load teams onto my personal device. I created a teams chat with just myself in order to send photos to my laptop faster (without the virus scanners checking all the files for hours if I emailed it), or if I need to send a link to myself (or others) in another device because Teams won’t let me copy and paste text into other applications or messages

Personal email in a browser then create an email and add the pics as attachments. Save as draft and you don’t even have to send. Google Drive and usb ports are all likely locked down.
Kittymeow123@reddit
Save as draft is an innovative idea
GoatGoatPowerRangers@reddit
This is how David Petreues was sending messages to his mistress while he was CIA director.
krebstorm@reddit
With this level of security you think they allow web mail access?
My company blocked Web Mail four years ago.
bibkel@reddit
Ya I could not access Yahoo from mine and it wasn't a bank.
Mcgwizz@reddit
Take apart the computer and clone the drive
4i1anl@reddit
IT should have your work laptop locked down, and access to some sites may be blocked.
but i was in a similar situation and wanted to transfer about 10gb of files for portfolio. here is how i did it, and you may also try if it works for you.
in case access to the site is blocked, you can can try windows powershell "scp" command and transfer the files via terminal. you may need to read up on this but this is also worth a shot.
good luck!
polishbyproxy@reddit
WhatsApp is my go to for transferring files when I’m blocked from all other avenues.
AwakePlatypus@reddit
If everything else is locked down, why would you think they would have access to whatsapp?
polishbyproxy@reddit
Our office uses WhatsApp for team communications, so it’s left open. O365 is locked down solid. Also Gmail and other mail apps are blocked by our proxy.
Just a thought… I use WhatsApp web on my pc to Xfer pictures.
Jennings_in_Books@reddit
WhatsApp isn’t used much in the US, especially in the office environment. That would get flagged immediately
ohhellopia@reddit
You can't download from social media posts? Are these events never posted online?
Blair_Bubbles@reddit (OP)
They are, but the marketing managers take personal photos of the designs printed close up and in venue. The professional photos are based on the event as a whole :/ sometimes they'd take like 20 photos and they'd only get a tiny corner of one of the designs
ohhellopia@reddit
If the marketing managers are taking personal photos then can you ask them to sms send it to you?
Moist-Pickle-2736@reddit
I think OP means they’re taking personal photos of the physical prints of the professional designs. So if they send via mms OP will get an iPhone camera photo of their design on a poster or something, which i dont think is what OP wants.
ohhellopia@reddit
I think OP also wants IRL finished photos which the marketing manager does have but OP just can't send it to themselves.

Set up an FTP at home and send it there. Encrypt a file an email it or dropbox.
Mother-Pride-Fest@reddit
Good idea. BTW Material Files has an FTP server built in. Easier to do if both devices can see each other on the same local network.
AnonUserAccount@reddit
Here’s what I’ve done in the past. If you have a laptop that you can take home, this becomes easy. You connect to your home network and enable sharing on your home machine. Then, from your work machine, you type //192.168.1.50/c$ or whatever the up for your personal machine is. Drag and drop.
Second way is to set up a teams call/meeting and invite your personal account. Upload the files to share and you can access them later on any computer.
A third thing is to find any website that allows attachments or files. USAJobs is one, but there are many. Upload them there.
waitingOnMyletter@reddit
Do you have an LLC? I set up an LLC when I was right out of college. Every company I have ever worked for I set up my LLC as a contractor. Email it to your contractor under the NDA agreement. Done.

Can you upload to the DAM and then create a share link? How do you send art to a printer? Or ad files? How do you share files with outside partners to get these designs produced? I’m in-house and have to send art to external partners a dozen times a week…It seems nuts that you can’t share art outside of your own domain.
And how do you design if you can’t upload anything to creative cloud? Can you email PDFs? Place the images in InDesign and export a pdf of the designs and send that to yourself.
Send yourself a guest proof in your proofing platform, then open the guest link on your device…
If you’re designing them, and they are being produced, you’ve gotten them out of your local/corporate environment somehow…. If it’s blocked because it’s Gmail.com (or some other free service) buy a domain and get the cheapest google workspace so you have an email domain that won’t automatically flag. Upload them directly to the media library on your portfolio site. Create a free website on whatever platform your corporate site is built on and upload them to the website media library. Or create a free Wix or Squarespace site and upload them to that.

Getting things off a major bank computer will flash your compliance folks and cause you, and your boss, and her boss, a big ol headache. They might fire you, I dunno.
But I bet if you asked, someone in marketing could help you out.

Message them to yourself on linked in
jr0061006@reddit
You cannot send it from your work email to your personal email, but can you do the following?
In your work email, compose an email and attach what you want to attach.
Change the Send From email to your personal email.
Send to your personal email, from your personal email.
jambocool@reddit
Huh? That’s not how email in a corporate world works.
gabmonty@reddit
I work for a similar company. I have found that the only thing that goes below the radar is LinkedIn messages. You obviously can’t message yourself, but tell a friend what’s up and start sending
Bratchan@reddit
see if the computer has a SD slot some of the laptops have them. if so you can do that. Also might check to see if you have a USB-C port. If you do you might be able to do USB-C to USB-C to your phone if you are a lucky user who uses android. If you try you can always say you were trying to charge you phone to play stupid.
If you have access to websites see if you can hit up any of the cloud services, google drive, one drive, etc and drop it off there. You could also possible use megaupload or websites like similar and just delete it when you get home from the account.
Sometimes teamns allows you to message outside of your company and send things, You could always see if you can do that one.
might hit up a couple of the tech/computer subs as well
Medium_Exam5404@reddit
I wouldn’t recommend this. Modern device security systems (think CrowdStrike) will alert the IT team as soon as an external drive is plugged into a machine.
hivemind_disruptor@reddit
That sounds like you want to get secret bank info out of the system.

Can you do a teams/zoom meeting, invite your personal phone's account, then screenshot on your own phone?
sleestakarmy@reddit
Https ports are blocked but there are other ports open.
ftp ssh telnet
gridsandorchids@reddit
Hi! Im a designer too. Google drive or some other cloud photo service, or a burner email. Process stuff is usually important for portfolios (not sure what specifically you do) so try to get that. Are you using Figma or what software? If they block everything you can potentially set up web hosting or a WordPress site and upload them.
Not sure what the nasty email says or the managers but try telling them you just need it for your portfolio or alternately say youre trying to document process and projects for the company
chicken2007@reddit
I used Bluetooth with good success when other things were locked down.
fasterfester@reddit
Speak with your boss. It’s the professional thing to do, and as a bonus you won’t lose your job!
Ghrrum@reddit
Call tech support and your manager and explain the problem?
Fit-Tip-1212@reddit
Local Send maybe?
fastlane181@reddit
Save the pictures to your desktop then open your personal email in a browser. Drag the files to a new message and send them to yourself.
Or, better yet, open a Gmail account and drag them into Google Drive.
ACynicalOptomist@reddit
Can you take a picture of it with your phone.
