Did your public school have you recite the state pledge of allegiance?

This might just be a Texas thing because we think we're better than everyone, but I was in both public and private and we were required to recite the Texas state pledge once a week (in my public school) and everyday (in private. I wonder if this is a thing in other states or schools in Texas?
IlexAquifolia@reddit
My 2nd grade teacher in New York made us do this, but that was my only experience being asked to recite the pledge. She was an older woman, and in retrospect probably fairly conservative.
Mental_Freedom_1648@reddit
Just going to note for OP that this must be about the Pledge to the Flag of the USA, right? Because NY doesn't have a state pledge of allegiance.
FluffyFry4000@reddit
I remember us having to do the pledge of allegiance every morning, I forgot if we kept doing it in High School, but I remember it most in Elementary school.
It was strange man, I came from Indonesia right, you'd think we'd be the one to be doing some weird shit in the morning, but no, I didn't expect it when I came to school here for the first time. I was like "One nation under god?" it was kinda scary ngl, even in Indonesia which is mostly Muslim, I never experienced anything like it, we only did our version of the pledge on Saturdays when we have boy/girl scout day, and our pledge talks nothing about god, nothing about Allah nothing about religion or anything like that.
dweaver987@reddit
What do you pledge: to never reside in radical liberal California?
Ifyougivearagamuffin@reddit
I've never heard of a state pledge of alliegence before
NintendogsWithGuns@reddit
“Honor the Texas flag. I pledge allegiance to thee, Texas, one and indivisible.”
I used to have to recite it everyday at school. Usually right after the American flag pledge. They added the “one state under God” bullshit after I had graduated high school.
ThrowThisAccountAwav@reddit (OP)
What year did you graduate HS? I was saying one state under God in middle school in 2014s. I moved from Puerto Rico when I was little and I remember we almost never recited any anthem so I was shocked when we had to recite anthems here lol.
NintendogsWithGuns@reddit
They didn’t add the “one state under God” crap until 2007, so a little before that. That’s about the same time that the republicans started rebranding as evangelical Christian, as opposed to simply being in favor of rich people and corporations.
ChiliAndRamen@reddit
For the bat and just to give a heads up, under god wasn’t in the national pledge of allegiance until 1954 because of “godless commies” or something like that
boopbaboop@reddit
I don’t think there is a state pledge of allegiance in most states.
bugga2024@reddit
I googled my state's because I'd never heard of this and NY doesn't have one. Only 18 states have their own pledge according to Google
MtHood_OR@reddit
Let me guess, they are mostly former rebels.
MsPennyP@reddit
You aren't wrong.
Per google:
The 17 states with official pledges (with adoption dates) are Alabama (2001), Arkansas (1953), Georgia (1935), Kentucky (2000), Louisiana (1981), Michigan (1972), Mississippi (1942), New Mexico (1963), North Carolina (2007), Ohio (2002), Oklahoma (1982), Rhode Island (1910), South Carolina (1966), South Dakota (1987), Tennessee (2006), Texas (1933), and Virginia (1954)
fbibmacklin@reddit
TIL my state has a pledge of allegiance. Not even once.
Exciting-Pie7802@reddit
I am in Michigan and never knew we had a state pledge and never had to say it in school.
Chromatic_Trek@reddit
Most of my schooling was in AZ and CA but I did my senior year in South Dakota and my nieces/nephews all attend public school in South Dakota. No one has a clue about the state anthem (never was a thing when I was in as well) lol
SpunkySideKick@reddit
It must have fallen out of favour in the Carolinas. I went to school in both states and don't remember it at all.
MsPennyP@reddit
I didn't know of the Carolinas one either. I grew up in NC and never knew.
rojita369@reddit
I had no idea VA had one! We didn’t have to recite it in the 90s 😆
MtHood_OR@reddit
The following states have a pledge; Georgia, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas, Virginia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Ohio, South Dakota, Michigan, and New Mexico. So excluding Florida and Alabama, every former Confederate state has a pledge.
msabeln@reddit
Mostly but not all. Michigan, New Mexico, Ohio, and South Dakota are included.
Pleaseappeaseme@reddit
I didn’t have to recite it in school in Ohio though. And it was in the 70s and 80s
Valuable-Math9969@reddit
I grew up in Michigan, and this is, to the best of my memory, the first time I've heard this. Fascinating!
mmlickme@reddit
I hear yall don’t have state history classes also
Drew707@reddit
I pledge allegiance to California,
and to the bear for which it stands,
one republic, under redwoods,
indivisible,
with avocados and burritos for all.
Ramen.
fartbutt4209@reddit
i never did this so googled mine also (california) and we do not have one
MsOnyxMoon@reddit
When I was in catholic school for elementary, every morning we stood and recited The Lords Prayer, the Pledge of Allegiance, then sang My Country ‘Tis of Thee. Every… single… morning.
Once I went to public school we had to recite the Pledge of Allegiance, standing up, hand over heart.
ThrowThisAccountAwav@reddit (OP)
My private school was Catholic and we didn't go to the extreme of my country tis of thee, but we did do Texas and US everyday on the PA.
MsOnyxMoon@reddit
I’m just now finding out some states have their own pledge. And yea, my school was pretty strict and extreme, they even sent letters home every year asking for permission to “discipline” us (spank us with rulers).
Fred-Z@reddit
peak Texas
dweaver987@reddit
I grew up in Massachusetts in the 1960-70s and I never heard of a state pledge. Same thing in California where my kids grew up.
(And this is the first time I remember hearing of Texas’s pledge.)
goodnsimple@reddit
NM does
Roadshell@reddit
Nah, I'm pretty sure that's a Texas exclusive insanity.
ThrowThisAccountAwav@reddit (OP)
There's a reason I moved from Texas to Mass
rcjhawkku@reddit
But, but, but, taxes are SO much lower in Texas. All the MA billionaires are moving there. Or so I’ve been told.
Mayor_of_BBQ@reddit
lol the property and sales taxes in ‘tax free texas’ are insane
rcjhawkku@reddit
Oh, yeah, people always complain about income tax but ignore the property tax rates.
As a general rule,
Income Tax Rate + Property Tax Rate = Constant
ThrowThisAccountAwav@reddit (OP)
They probably are moving to Texas, but idgaf. Still beats dealing with the shittiness of low pay and God awful politics. My family members are still voting blue back home so there's hope.
Muroid@reddit
I’ve never heard of a state pledge of allegiance before, but as soon as I read the title, I was 100% positive that OP was from Texas.
pfcgos@reddit
Wyoming doesn't have a state pledge of allegiance.
ThrowThisAccountAwav@reddit (OP)
A pledge to a literal buffalo would be a bit strange, makes sense.
pfcgos@reddit
Idk... we get alot of entertainment from the buffalo in Yellowstone goring idiot tourists who try to pet the fluffy murder voted in spite of the signs telling them not to. I would say a pledge to that
ThrowThisAccountAwav@reddit (OP)
I went to look up the name of the bison on the flag and I hope the state puts this one into law https://www.reddit.com/r/wyoming/s/VouMhyHxmL
Soggy-Attempt@reddit
Yes
ExplanationNo8603@reddit
Technically speaking Texas is not a part of the United States, they seceded the United States just rejected it and said yes you are a part of us (2x, once with a war once without)
Practical-Ordinary-6@reddit
Yes, it's a Texas thing.
Ill_Apple2327@reddit
I didn't know we had one lowkey
No_Arugula4195@reddit
Never heard of a state POA. Makes sense it would be Texas.
B_A_Beder@reddit
Pledge of Allegiance to the US flag yes, never heard of a state pledge
Square_Band9870@reddit
NY. Never heard of such a thing.
Pleaseappeaseme@reddit
Between two States no and no. Just the normal one.
Kee-suh@reddit
I just watched a Smosh episode and they talked about this very thing. I've lived in many states (not Texas) and never knew the state pledge for any of them.
Kee-suh@reddit
Apparently my home state does have one and it's actually not super weird.
"Saludo la bandera del estado de Nuevo México, el símbolo zía de amistad perfecta, entre culturas unidas."
"I salute the flag of the state of New Mexico, the Zia symbol of perfect friendship among united cultures."
rojita369@reddit
No, only the regular pledge of allegiance. As far as I’m aware, state pledges aren’t a normal thing. TX is its own brand of special, so I’m not surprised they’d have one.
Inspi@reddit
There's state ones?
Glamorousgrandma@reddit
Teacher in Illinois here. Our administration says the pledge every day over the announcements and the kids are allowed to stand or not as they see fit.
Few-Wrongdoer-5296@reddit
My state does not have one that I know of. But now I'm kind of jealous.
ThrowThisAccountAwav@reddit (OP)
Please don't be. Texas is just full of itself sometimes.
No-Boat-1536@reddit
They didn’t force us to
BreadfruitRegular631@reddit
No and to the best of my knowledge there is no such thing as a State pledge in the State where I want to school.
rojita369@reddit
Yes. As far as I’m aware, this happens in every state of the nation.
LinuxLinus@reddit
Oregon definitely does not have a pledge of allegiance.
Intelligent-Invite79@reddit
“Honor the Texas flag. I pledge allegiance to thee Texas, one state under God, one and indivisible.” We’d recite the pledge of allegiance, then turn to where the Texas flag was and recite the Texas pledge. Every single morning, crazy shit lol.
Double-Phrase-3274@reddit
I went to school in Texas from 1984-1989.
I have not said the Texas state pledge a single time. Not even the year we took Texas history.
Yeahboyeah@reddit
Not in High School
ElijahNSRose@reddit
Many do.
I was homeschooled and I forget when Mom stopped having us do it in the morning. The high school plays whatever-that-song-is before every game, and it's recited at a community monthly dinner
donuttrackme@reddit
I don't think we had one.
Bitter_Ad_9523@reddit
oh please tell us what your state pledge of allegiance is, I'd love to see it. The official Pledge is the United States and yes, we recited it as a kid growing up and beyond.
ThrowThisAccountAwav@reddit (OP)
I remember it by heart.
Honor the Texas Flag, I pledge allegiance to thee, Texas, one state under God, one an indivisible
Bitter_Ad_9523@reddit
Whats the PR pledge?
ThrowThisAccountAwav@reddit (OP)
I moved from there when I was little. Mostly we sang "La Borinqueña". I don't remember ever singing the US anthem, however I should ask my family members who stayed on the island what they recite nowadays.
Bitter_Ad_9523@reddit
Thats wild. In all my years, I've never heard of states having their own pledges, Mottos yes but not pledges.
Bitter_Ad_9523@reddit
We did the US pledge. California didnt have a state pledge.
StrangeSequitur@reddit
We didn't do a state pledge, but at one point my elementary school introduced a School Pledge that they had us recite right after the pledge of allegiance.
"... with liberty and justice for all. ... I am respectful, I am responsible, I am safe, I am prepared, I am here to learn and therefore I will do nothing to keep the teacher from teaching or anyone - myself included - from learning. I will keep my hands and feet to myself at all times..."
astralTacenda@reddit
state? no.
but i went to a private Christian elementary school in southern california and they made us recite not only the pledge to the American flag, but also the christian flag and Bible.
very rarely ever said ANY pledge, even the one to the American flag, after leaving that school.
OK_Stop_Already@reddit
State pledge of allegiance? No. I don't even know if Mississippi has one.
evaluna1968@reddit
I think we did it sporadically, and definitely not by high school. I do remember vividly one girl in my circle of friends having the presence of mind, at age 11, to question the teacher why she should have to pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, given that she was actually a British subject and all?
DOMSdeluise@reddit
We did it every day in my Texas high school when I was there. State and national pledge.
Boring_Investigator0@reddit
Florida doesn't have a state pledge of allegiance. I had no idea any state did. But when I was in private school we had to do three pledges: the U.S. flag, the Christian flag and the Bible.
WesternTrail@reddit
Not in California. When we saw them do the Texas Pledge in “Boyhood” we had to ask my cousins from Dallas if that was real.
Responsible_Side8131@reddit
I don’t think my state (or probably even most states) have a state pledge.
Narrow-Research-5730@reddit
Not the state's but we did the national Pledge of allegiance.
kartoffel_engr@reddit
WA does not have one, so no.
TripleDoubleFart@reddit
VA has one, but I've never heard it before. We were never asked to recite it in school.
Makes sense that Texas would.. the whole state is a bit deranged.
mvislandgirl@reddit
Yes
GrowthSelect2449@reddit
I never even heard of a state pledge until I somehow got caught up in this exact conversation with some Texans.
47362514736251@reddit
I stopped reciting the pledge in high school back in the early 90's. Nobody paid any attention to it.
hakohead@reddit
Wait... there are separate state pledges of allegiance? I've never heard of such a thing in CT
rockandroller@reddit
We were supposed to. By the time I got to high school I refused because I thought it was creepy and weird.
Individual_Check_442@reddit
I don’t think we even have a state Pledge of Allegiance.
Brave_Speaker_8336@reddit
I read the post incorrectly until I came to the comments because I didn’t even register that a state pledge of allegiance was a thing that might exist anywhere
CarolinCLH@reddit
Neither do I
Mlady_gemstone@reddit
yeah but tbh, most of us half assed it until highschool when we were no longer required to do it.
LupercaniusAB@reddit
I’ve never heard of a Californian pledge of allegiance, though one might exist. People forget that this is the state that gave the country that shitbird Ronald Reagan, and was very rightwing throughout the 1950s
hakohead@reddit
From CT, and I recall reciting the pledge of allegiance every day of school all the way through high school
Wak3upHicks@reddit
Wasn't a thing in Arizona, and Google says there isn't a state-specific one for us
BigOil88@reddit
TIL ALABAMA HAS A STATE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE. WOW.
never recited learned about it or or heard of it
This was the 1960s late & in 1970s
Texas, of course would be a little different because well… It’s Texas
MyUsername2459@reddit
I've never heard of a "State Pledge of Allegiance".
We only did the Pledge of Allegiance in Kindergarten and Elementary School. I think by 3rd grade we'd stopped doing it.
kemarti1@reddit
This is NOT a thing outside of Texas and is totally unacceptable.
Polite_Bark@reddit
MI and we did recite the Pledge.
PlusPresentation680@reddit
The Texas state pledge of allegiance??? That is insane
Artistic-Degree-4593@reddit
I've never done a state pledge of allegiance, but between 1984-1994 I said the United States pledge of allegiance every school day in my morning classes.
Sweetington@reddit
Yes I’m in North Carolina and did it every single morning kindergarten thru high school. This was 2000-2014 so it felt normal at the time
DeadMemesNowPlease@reddit
No. I don't think other states even bothered to write a pledge of aligence, because they weren't looking to split loyalties between state and country for the last 160 years or so.
According to Wikipedia 15 states have bothered to have an official salute or pledge to their flag. Mine is not one of them. We stopped saying the US pledge after elementary school. I think it went over the intercom once a week in middle school but was almost completely ignored and was never said in class during high school.
Key-Character-6928@reddit
Because they’re the only state that used to be a nation i guess

gman2391@reddit
I have never heard of a state pledge
OkayDay21@reddit
I’ve never even heard of a state pledge. Apparently PA doesn’t have an official one.
PistachioPerfection@reddit
I grew up in Texas; we didn't say a pledge for Texas but we said the Pledge of Allegiance to the US
AnathemaRose@reddit
No one is required, there have been cases against requiring anyone to say the pledge. Every school I attended (public) had the pledge each morning, but it was not required to stand and/or say the pledge. My experience in private school limited that to only Friday mornings, and again, not required.
Aggressive-Emu5358@reddit
That’s not really OPs angle. Did your school also recite a state-specific pledge in addition to the national one?
ThrowThisAccountAwav@reddit (OP)
Of course no one is required. It's never required anywhere. I'm just asking if you do have them
PhotojournalistNew6@reddit
They wouldn't even force us to cite the national anthem. I didn't even know MA had a state anthem.
No-Lunch4249@reddit
TBF you arent required to by law. Even students who have severely curtailed rights arent required to.
Free-Sherbet2206@reddit
It’s just a weird Texas cult thing
manicpixidreamgirl04@reddit
We don't have one
OkayDay21@reddit
It played over the loud speaker everyday in homeroom but only the teacher and like two kids ever paid much attention to it. My son goes to the same school and he said it still plays every day during announcements but no one stands for it.
Asparagus9000@reddit
Only 17 states have a state pledge.
Aggressive-Emu5358@reddit
I only know Texas even has one because we used to make fun of how corny it is…No, we had no such pledge. But we did recite the Pledge of Allegiance every morning over the intercom.
MortimerDongle@reddit
I have never heard of a state pledge. I'm not sure we even had a state flag, definitely not in every classroom

No. I don’t even know if there is a Georgia POA.

No-Lunch4249@reddit
Maryland doesnt have a state pledge of allegiance. Seems very Texas specific lol
thatcoolguy60@reddit
I don't think Alabama has a state pledge of allegiance.
Capt_Tinsley@reddit
We said it every morning at the start of the schoolday. Technically it was considered optional when I was a kid, but no one objected (I was in 5th grade during 9/11)
Also, I don't think any of us knew what we were doing. We said a few sentences we had memorized, no one our age had a clue what it meant
GarnetSardonyx@reddit
I don't even think my state has a state plegde
CPLWPM85@reddit
They did it here in Mississippi though I don't recall if it was required. For high school, I was in private school and they still did the pledge every morning but it wasn't required that we participate.
Deanoishere@reddit
TIL there are state pledges. So that's a hard no from my rural Indiana public school.
Consistent_Case_5048@reddit
No. I didn't even know that individual states had pledges until a few years ago when I moved to New Mexico.
