Give me your most difficult commercial checkride questions
mrcrabswalking@reddit
Not really difficult, per se, but on my commercial multi checkride, during the preflight my examiner asked me about fuel sumping.
He asked what we’re looking for, and if water would be on the top or bottom of the container. And then he asked what we would do if we found contaminants.

Easy way to remember where the water would be: if it settled to the top, the sump port pulling from the bottom of the tank would be useless. I had an instructor ask me this once and got myself turned around in my own head before he pointed out the obvious.

Ok I see, what would you say in regards to what you would do.
I would just say we wouldn’t fly and we’d have to have maintenance drain the fuel out of it. Would that be incorrect?

Assuming a C172,
Why idle at 1000RPM?
How does the stall horn work?
How does the trim tab work?
Do you have a rudder tab? How does that work?
While the engine is not running, turning on both master and alternator on shows a discharge on the ammeter. Turning off just the alternator resets the ammeter to 0. Why?
Whats your static RPM range?

1) I’m assuming it’s for oil. Maybe to keep oil pressure up and circulating
2) the stall horn works through a reed, and when airflow is deflected near the leading edge of the wing it comes through the reed and vibrates it which creates the noise we hear.
3) the trim tab is manually actuated. Through a cable and gear connected to the trim wheel, we can change the angle it has off of the elevator.
4) we have a ground adjustable rudder tab and it is how it sounds. We cannot adjust it in flight but only on the ground.
5) the ammeter is measures the alternator output, therefore when the alternator switch is off, it cannot measure anything and it resets to 0.
ahriyae@reddit
For the most part yeah.
Near the critical AoA, the stagnation point moves to below the port. This makes the low pressure area flow over it, sucking air out.
Some extra if you want: How does the trim tab set/move the elevator?
Nice
The ammeter measures current in/out of the battery. The alternator uses electromagnets and its field circuit is charged by the battery.

2) that makes so much more sense. I hadn’t actually really thought of the process of it. Thank you!
3) For example, if the trim tab was deflected upwards, it would cause the airflow over the elevator and trim tab to deflect the elevator down, leading to the aircraft slightly pitching down. I don’t think I’m explaining it very well but if I’m wrong please let me know.
5) I think I need to review this a little more, thank you for asking that.
6) I didn’t see the question the first time and I had to look it up, but the static RPM range for my aircraft is 2400 rpm’s.

If you see black smut on the bottom of the engine cowling what could that be an indication of? Are there any risks that come to mind?
ambeingheldhostage@reddit
Isn't the term soot? Smut is erotic literature.
Topopotomopolot@reddit
And a fungus fruit that grows in corn.

Possibly some kind of oil leak, or exhaust residue which I suppose could indicate the engine has been running rich. Just purely speculating here and trying to use deductive reasoning.

I’ve actually watched pretty much most of his videos regarding the commercial ACS and I bought his ace guide. Very very helpful
