is a 5 year old i5-10400 to a new ryzen 7 5700G a worthwile upgrade.

Most of my current build is about 5 years old (i5-10400, 16Gb ram and mobo) and I use it both for gaming and for work every day. Not to long ago I upgraded my GPU to a RX 6600 and I am sometimes noticing my CPU bottleneck.
Since I already have DDR4 ram and don't plan on going the DDR5 route in this economy, and because I worry if any of my components break I wouldn't have a backup I started looking in to upgrading to a 5700G + mobo I found a decent deal for.
Since I still have my previous GPU I could without too much investment use the parts I swap out in to something to hook up to my TV for couch play, make in to a home server or just keep as a spare PC.
Would it be worth the upgrade?

Most motherboards that take 10th gen can take 11th. You might check prices and compatibility for say a 11600k.

The 5700G is great if you want to use it stand alone for its integrated graphics. It relatively sucks compared to other zen3 parts for gaming because it has half the L3 cache.
If I look at techpower ups review from 5 years ago, it would be a whole 2,5% faster in games than your 10400 is.
Hardware unboxed found similar margins. And that was 5 years ago when it came out. Newer titles are harder to run and lean a bit more on that l3 cache to compensate, so the difference to a 5700x for example has become larger.
Also 5 year old i5 to new ryzen 7 isn’t really correct. You’ve used it 5 years, but that doesn’t diminish its performance. The 5700G is just as old, so you’d be upgrading from a 5 year old r i5 to 5 year old ryzen 6.

5700g is not an ideal gaming cpu because of its small cache amount, similar to the 5500
5700x or 5600(x) would be much more worthwhile, but even then it’ll just bring you to slightly above 10700k performance

Go for a 5700x or 5800 XT. The G has half the L3 cache and really is just for people who don't have a dedicated GPU.

Yes the 5700g is much faster than the i5-10400.
