In your part of the county, how do you indicate that "you" is plural?
Posted by wheninrome5000@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 361 comments
The english word "you" can obviously be both singular or plural.
How, when you need to, indicate that you mean "you (plural)" or "you (singular)" in speaking and writing to avoid confusion?
"Do you (plural) want to come over for a dinner tonight?"
or:
"Hey we're planning an orgy, would you (singular) like to come?"
Significant_Can_2245@reddit
I’ve never said just “you” when referring to multiple people and I don’t think I’ve ever heard it either. I would say “you all” or “y’all”.
Dazzling-Climate-318@reddit
Youz guyz was when I was a child where I grew up. I even recall hearing the head majorette saying this to the other majorettes, no males included in the conversation at all.
Here it would be you all, or we, depending on the circumstance.
Moons_of_Moons@reddit
You guys
Lokisworkshop@reddit
why would you only invite one person to an orgy?
wheninrome5000@reddit (OP)
Because the partner is ugly, maybe?
Quirky-Invite7664@reddit
Is it still an orgy with only 2 people?
Proof-Republic-7587@reddit
I mean… when you get a wedding invitation addressed to only you, would you wonder why the couple only wants one guest there, or would you assume other people were mailed their own invitations? It’s the same when you receive a card to RVSP to an orgy.
NewAnything8221@reddit
Gotta be at least 6 people for an orgy
BouncingSphinx@reddit
You guys or y'all (which can be tricky because y'all can also be used as singular).
thecryptidmusic@reddit
"You's", but that isn't so much the norm for Northeast PA (that's more Philly). Sometimes it's "You All" or "All-a-ya's".
Proof-Republic-7587@reddit
Oh, right! All-a-yas, or All-yas. Both very common in Reading, PA.
Patrizio_Argento@reddit
I say, 'you people'
LABELyourPHOTOS@reddit
"You guys wanna come?"
(we use guys for a group and it could be men or women)
nonstopflux@reddit
Yall, youse, and yinz are also appropriate for the plural you.
Proof-Republic-7587@reddit
I don’t know about yinz, but y’all and youse (at least around Philly/the main line) can also mean singular.
Proof-Republic-7587@reddit
Oh, and “youse/youse guys” in Philly can also be pronounced “yuz/yuz guys”
Aquarius_K@reddit
yins is definitely used in the south.
Emergency-Poem-8963@reddit
"Ya'll" makes sense.
"Yinz" might be lead poisoning
Proof-Republic-7587@reddit
“Ya’ll” actually doesn’t make sense, but “y’all” does. ;)
Proof-Republic-7587@reddit
Oh, no, I know the word. I just meant I don’t know if “yinz” is both singular and plural the way y’all and youse are. I haven’t spoken to enough Pittsburgh people..
ljculver64@reddit
If heard You'ins. No idea where they were from
tiger_guppy@reddit
Sometimes you’ll even hear a “youse guys” to make it even clearer
Proof-Republic-7587@reddit
Right. “Youse” is the same as “you” in that it’s both singular and plural. “Youse guys” is always plural.
kerutland@reddit
Y’all can be singular or plural. If one wishes to emphatically indicate plural, one says “all y’all”
Metagator@reddit
I thought " yinz" was a Pittsburgh thing...
doctorjazz12345@reddit
Yinz? Who says yinz?
anclwar@reddit
Pittsburgh. It's pretty hyper specific to Pittsburgh and only Pittsburgh.
tryptanfelle@reddit
I’ve heard it in Pittsburgh and, interestingly, in Western North Carolina among the Cherokees.
TheCloudForest@reddit
I've even seen you guys used on the Golden Girls, so it's not something recent to use that phrase when talking to women.
GuadDidUs@reddit
My family was all women growing up in the early 90s. My mom frequently referred to us as "You guys". I was so confused when people on the internet were claiming it's not gender neutral.
Effective_Coach7334@reddit
it was mostly women objecting to being referred to as 'guys'
GuadDidUs@reddit
Yes, and as a woman I found that confusing, as me and my sister were frequently referred to as guys by my mom.
shelwood46@reddit
When I was the only woman in fire school back in the 80s, I would object when the instructor referred to us as "gentlemen" or "lads" and mildly object to "fellas", but guys/you guys was totally fine.
tryptanfelle@reddit
Gen-Xers could tell you that when we were kids, every episode of The Electric Company began with, “Hey, You Guyyyyyyyyyyyyyys!”
LABELyourPHOTOS@reddit
Yeah, not new at all. I'm older than the Golden girls were.
TheCloudForest@reddit
Indeed. I think a lot of people would assume that it's a newfangled gender neutral thing, but, evidence says otherwise.
telemajik@reddit
I’ve seen “folks” gaining traction in corporate settings.
HMonster224@reddit
Yes, this is peak corporate America speak - has been a thing for a long time.
Dry-Past-7575@reddit
My lit prof said “guy” referred to Guy Fawkes. It was originally intended as a comment that you looked unkempt like a Guy Fawkes effigy before burning. He said it was gender neutral. FWIW.
tryptanfelle@reddit
Guy does come from Guy Fawkes. It began to refer to the dummy used for burning, and then for a generic person, and then a male generic person (as a singular).
joellecarnes@reddit
I used to greet customers at work like that but then any time it was a group of just women they would get mad. Then I switched to y'all bc it was easier and people made fun of me because it was the midwest. I literally couldn't win lol
princessm1423@reddit
And that could work for either example

Depends which side of Pennsylvania. Western PA has a lot of Pittsburgh influence, so you might hear “Yinz” as the equivalent phrase to “y’all.”
In Philly as far as I know they just use “you all,” “you guys.” Pretty big standard stuff.
Quirky_Commission_56@reddit
Y’all!
la-anah@reddit

For most of the state "you" is used for both and meaning is infered via context. But "y'all" is making some real inroads, even up here in Massachusetts.

I use y'all for both writing and speaking, sometimes I'll say yuns when speaking. I realize how hillbilly that might make me sound but it's pretty second nature in the region of Appalachia I'm from 😂
Sea_Macaron_7962@reddit
I say “y’all” but it took me like 13 years to do it. I was originally from a part of the country that u don’t use it.
HMonster224@reddit
Born in NJ, live in TX. I use y'all completely unironically in Texas because it's just what you say here, but when I go back home to visit I automatically adjust myself to "you guys".
sean8877@reddit

ATLien_3000@reddit
Y'all. Or all y'all.
That's how we do it in my part of Fulton County.
Also, I think they do it the same way in south Fulton County.
North Fulton county is overrun with carpetbaggers, though, so they probably just say "you" or "you" as appropriate.
HonestLemon25@reddit
All of y’all is one of my favorite phrases.
“Alluhyall”
ShelbyDriver@reddit
That's how all y'all southerners do it.
riarws@reddit
I’ve lived there before and they still said y’all. It’s too useful not to adopt immediately.
ATLien_3000@reddit
It's become much more rare up there in the last 10 years.
The Black population keeps the southern vernacular going more than anything in Atlanta and south.
jess8771@reddit
I say "yinz" when I text and "you guys" when I'm talking out loud
LankyJeep@reddit
Y’all short for you all
And if your from Pittsburgh it’s Yinz (only 3 counties in the whole country use this slang, it’s very regional)
doomgeneration91@reddit
I’d say “ Hey we’re planning an orgy, would y’all like to come?”
wheninrome5000@reddit (OP)
What if you wanted to avoid the invitee from bringing a partner ?
doomgeneration91@reddit
If I just wanted a singular person I’d say I am having an orgy would you like to come and if they said oh can I bring Kyle I’d say, mmm no thank you
And then they’d say well I’ll have to think about it and talk it over with Kyle
And I’d say okay, keep me posted!
Aquarius_K@reddit
In the south we say Y'ALL lol. I personally say "you all" so I feel fancy.
rcjhawkku@reddit

Lol, I love this description. It's much the same here in Missouri.
"You'uns," (pronounced "yunz") is a common one used by older folks in the rural south-central part of the state where I grew up. Most of the folks I know who say it tend to be people from my grandparents' generation (born in the 1940s) who grew up in a farming community with little access to education.

pawsplay36@reddit
I've heard it in enough contexts to know y'all is becoming mainstreamed throughout the country. Gen Z says it.
southernfirm@reddit
Because it was the best option for the English Language's second person plural opening. What else is better? Yins? Youse? You Lot? You guys? Absolutely not. Y'all rolls off the tongue. It is as sweet as iced tea, and just as welcoming. The only reason people resist it is, you know, the stuff we got into down here a few years back.
Cavalcades11@reddit
Honestly there were a lot of “y’all” users in upstate NY. It threw me off when I first heard it.

Y’all is singular.
All y’all is plural.
moonwillow60606@reddit
Not exactly.
“You” is singular. Do you want to come over to study?
“Y’all” is plural. Do y’all (you all) want to come over for dinner?
“All y’all” refers to a group. We’re having a cookout. All y’all should come on Saturday.
SalvationArbys@reddit
You is also the plural form of thou, making ya’ll and all ya’ll even more exponentially plural
Helpyjoe88@reddit
That's incorrect.
Y'all is "you all" - its always plural.
'You' would be used for a singular subject.
People sometimes misunderstand this, as they may hear a sentence where 'y'all' is spoken to a single person, but they're missing that other people are understood as included in that subject.
If I tell my friend "You should come over for dinner", I'm inviting him. If I say to him "Y'all come over for dinner" then it's understood by the plural nature of "y'all" that that the invitation is not for him alone, but for a group that he is part of (eg his family).
"All y'all' would be used to indicate a large or extended group. (Say his mom, dad, and brother are in town. 'All y'all come over' would be used to show that those extended family members are also included in the invitation.)

Y'all if I'm just vaguely referring to a group of multiple people, or even a singular person sometimes.
All y'all of I'm being a bit more specific in my intent.
Like, if you're inviting people over, "Why don't y'all come by?" could be interpreted as either an invite for one person only, but " Why don't all y'all come by?" clearly refers to multiple people if I wanted, say, an entire household to show up.

As an ESL teacher, the answer is this is a highly contextual part of the English language, we use various methods, but most common its called previous placement. AKA, we have already established in the conversation if you are singular or plural for all following conversations, and if you plan to change that you must state that change in noun count. Unless this follows a pre-exist, social script that all parties know and are expected to follow. Despite regional commonality to use y'all vs. you guys, we are seeing that less regionally and more cultural influenced with gen Z and younger.
IndicationAromatic36@reddit

In southern states it’s “ya’ll” which is a combined form of “you all.” Do \~\~you all\~\~ ya’ll wanna’ come to dinner tonight?
In many other areas of the US you add the word “guys.” While “a guy” means a male, as in, I saw a guy walking down the street,” “guys” with an s at the end and after the word “you” it means a group of people non-specific to gender. “Do you guys want to come to dinner tonight?”
But beware after the word of, because if you see a group “of guys” walking down the street that means, specifically, a group of males.

It’s usually clear from context or body language which is intended. If I’m in a group and want to ask someone to dinner, it would be clear I’m talking just to them, or else I’d say “anyone want to come to dinner” or use body language to make it clear I’m talking to the entire group. Or talk softly so that it’s clear I’m just talking to the one person.
Sometimes I’ll say “folks”, but often that’s more to get the attention of a group of people than to grammatically indicate I’m asking everyone. Or I’ll say “anyone want to” as a way of indicating I mean the entire group.

For groups, “You all” or “you guys” is what I grew up with in South Florida. “Y’all” is starting to spread everywhere, but I don’t consider that organic in this part of the country yet. “You” plus a hand gesture also gets the meaning across.
“You two” or “you three” works well for those numbers.

I don’t think I’ve ever used just “you” in a plural context. If I have, I obviously didn’t realize it. It’s always accompanied something else to make it plural. You all, you guys, you and yours, etc.

I grew up with you guys as your plural, but it's confusing, particularly online. When written, you don't know the context and can't hear the stress, which indicates if everyone is being addressed or just the guys.
It's a problem when asking for assistance in moving furniture. Frequently, only the guys are asked to help, and so "guys" is understood to mean guys. Really, you want people who are strong, gender doesn't matter. I try to go with "you all" or "listen up," but habits are difficult to break. The only difficulty with you all is that it comes off as y'all, which sounds regional and it's often used as singular in that region. So what? Make "you" and "all" distinct if you don't want to sound Southern.
helloitsmejenkem@reddit
"Do you bitches want to come over tonight or are yall gonna pussy out like last time"?
CapinWinky@reddit
"You" is already the plural form. It drifting towards singular hundreds of years ago is because context clues made the already existing singular, "thou", unessesary in most cases. One word for both was good enough.
To the point of the question, if "you" doesn't already imply the entire group in context, I use "you all", but that is rarely necessary.
jigokubi@reddit
Considering I will always, without exception, say something like "you guys" or "everyone" when addressing more than one person, maybe we should have kept "thou."

I grew up in the south, but I don't like saying "ya'll" so I say "you guys" instead.
But a long time ago I watched a mafia type of movie, something with Joe Pesci, and he said "yous" (even in singular). Not to be confused with him saying "youths" (sounded like 'yutes') in the movie called My Cousin Vinnie.

You guys, you all, y'all, and the usually offensive you people.
donuttrackme@reddit
You all or you guys.
Or just use you and use context.
macoafi@reddit
I grew up in "yinz" territory with a mother who objected to using the local dialect, so we said "you guys." Nowadays, I mostly say "y'all." Occasionally I say "yinz" in phrases like "oh, yinz are the ones who…" because "yinz" is a contraction of "you ones" and that just seems more correct with the corresponding "ones."
TenMoon@reddit
I live in the only part of the country where the plural 'you' is 'yuns.' Not the more common 'you 'uns,' a single syllable 'yuns.' It's usage is restricted to rural people who are mostly older than sixty.
Most of us use 'you,' 'you guys,' 'y'all,' and even 'folks' sometimes.
Traditional-Photo227@reddit
We say "y'all" down here. Of course, out of reflex, I've definitely used it singularly multiple times.
VictorianPeorian@reddit
Midwest (Central Illinois): "You guys" for any gender group, with optional alternatives "you ladies" for an all-female group or "you gentlemen" for an all-male group, if you want to be fancy.
For an individual, either say their name ("Hey Joe, would you like to come over?") or make deliberate eye contact with just that one person, I guess? lol
Asparagus9000@reddit
You guys.

You really don’t as you is plural. But unless you are from the dirty south you might say you Guys or all of you.
virtual_human@reddit
I grew up in Louisiana so I still use y'all sometimes, but in Ohio a lot of people use you guys for men or women. Many times I, and lots of other people I know, just use you and figure out single or plural from context.
tisire@reddit
y'all is the correct answer and i will die on this hill. it fills a genuine grammatical gap that standard english just left open and everyone acting like it's exclusively southern is wrong, it's spreading everywhere because it's useful
TCFNationalBank@reddit
I say "You guys" for groups regardless of gender mix, it's never been a problem personally but I have heard online situations where a group of women find it inappropriate due to "guy" (singular) being only used in the masculine; "none of us are guys".
I understand "y'all" seems to be nationwide by this point. For some reason it feels like an inauthentic use AAVE/Southern AmEng when I say it, even though there are other aspects of AAVE that have melded into my white Midwestern English just fine.

In my area "you," "you guys," or "all of you" are traditionally the ways to pluralize you.
I was raised around my southern grandmother, however, and "y'all," "all y'all" have always been part of my vocabulary. It's become more common in the last 10-15 years here, but I used to get some weird looks for using it. People expected a southern accent if someone was saying "y'all," not a born and bred Coloradan, without a hint of a southern drawl.

I mean there's no plural "you", but there are words that follow or precede "you" to identify its plurality.
Generically it's "you all" or "y'all" shortened, or "all of you"

They’re pretty interchangeable but I’ve noticed that I tend to use “y’all” more for larger groups, or for nonspecific people, while I use “youse” a lot more when I’m talking to a smaller group of more specific people (like friends).
“Do any of y’all wanna order out?” - me to all my coworkers.
“Did youse wanna go to the store later?” - me to a couple of my friends.

I've been pretty successful exporting "y'all" to non-Southern, even non US friends. It just makes sense as a word, and it fills a gap in the language that is otherwise either ambiguous or unnecessarily gendered; more English speakers should embrace it!

Im not big into the orgy scene, but I know party etiquette--you don't just bring a +1 without being explicitly told to do so. So I'd assume that if I were approached for an orgy speaking to someone one on one, that the invite extended to me only.

We aren't confused because we use context clues. For example, if I am on the phone with a friend and she invites me for dinner, it can be assumed she means my husband and I, not just myself. Or, she might say something about a girl's night, in which case, it can be assumed she means just me.
You could also say, "You all" or "Y'all".

sherahero@reddit
Usually context is enough. If you are inviting a married couple or family to a dinner with your family for example, "you" would imply they are all invited. If planning a girl's night, would imply just the one person.
It never hurts to be clear by saying "would you and your spouse like to go to dinner?" or "do you want to get dinner with me done time, just us two?"
I think I usually clarify who exactly I'm inviting to avoid confusion.
HeimLauf@reddit

From the midwest, and most people say "you guys," at least in my family and friend groups. Some people, including myself, will often say y'all if its in text, but that's more about it being shorter and easier to type (so no different than other abbreviations like omw, hbu, etc). In more formal situations, I might also say y'all cause its a good neutral term that's still professional enough (in school for education).
MortimerDongle@reddit

I use y'all, but that turns heads around here. Either by context within a conversation, or a form of physical signaling.
Any-Concentrate-1922@reddit
Just "you" either way, usually. Sometimes you all to be clear, but not "y'all," as that's usually a southern thing.
If I'm asking "Do you want to come for dinner tonight," I had better be inviting everyone I'm talking to. It would be rude to only ask one person and leave the other person out. So the plural is implied.
gwenbeth@reddit
Y'all is plural but doesn't mean everyone you are talking to. All y'all is plural and meant to include everyone.
No_Cauliflower633@reddit
I wouldn't think 'you' by itself can refer to a group. If I told someone that I was at the mall with friends and he asked 'do you want to come over for dinner' I would assume he is asking about just me and not me + my friends. If he had instead asked 'do you guys want to come over for dinner' then it would be clear he is talking about the group.
