The no socks trend...

I was reminded of this because of a post on the Millennials sub, but does anyone here remember the period in the late 90s/early 2000s when no show socks weren't quite a thing yet and it was a trend to either completely fold your socks into your shoes and cut off circulation, or wear every pair of shoes without socks? I still have horrifying memories of what I called my biohazard shoes that I wore for 2 years in high school...
Elandycamino@reddit
My shoes were thrown out of the motorhome when we camped at the county fair, later my grandpa made me sleep outside with the rest of the smelly farm animals.
collegeoldie@reddit
Shoes worse than mine... I didn't think that was possible
Elandycamino@reddit
Oh man! The one time my cousin filled my shoes with foot powder and every step a puff of it would shoot out like I was on fire! Later it turned to a gross mud like substance. A local Car Stereo place used to have a stinky feet contest to win a system. I always wanted to let the dogs breathe for a month and go collect that prize!
collegeoldie@reddit
Oh wow, did you also have a phase were you were proud of yours? lmao
Elandycamino@reddit
Not exactly pride, but according to well, everyone my feet were the rankest. I wouldn't doubt if I killed a horse or suffocated a rabbit or two, down wind, that night at the fair.
collegeoldie@reddit
Were you also immediately asked to put your shoes back on seconds after taking them off whenever you went to a friend's place?
80s_angel@reddit
This just brought up a horrible memory. When I was in 6th grade a friend from school came over and my mom sprayed her feet with air freshener. I was mortified for the both of us! đ©đ«Ł
Elandycamino@reddit
đ€Ł I had it done lmao
collegeoldie@reddit
Was it bad? lmao
80s_angel@reddit
Her feet totally stunk! But it was also the first time she came over. My mom made a terrible impression.
Elandycamino@reddit
Oh hell yeah! I was able to track dirt all over their houses or wait outside LMAO
collegeoldie@reddit
Hey can you drop me a dm? I wanna keep talking about this because it's hilarious but I also don't wanna be posting 100 comments about our stinky shoes lmao
Elandycamino@reddit
Na, thats weird.
Elandycamino@reddit
For the sake of humanity I have worn socks while wearing shoes for 26 years because of these biological WMDs.
collegeoldie@reddit
Thank you for your service...
PrepetualSmelly@reddit (OP)
FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT!
RVAforthewin@reddit
My parents tied my sisterâs shoes to the car roof one time when we were traveling home from a trip. Thanks for reminding me so I can text her and make fun of her again.
The_best_is_yet@reddit
In our family, the stinkiest feet are a sign of dominance.
collegeoldie@reddit
Why do I feel like it's an Xennial thing in general to be proud of how gross you can be? lol
Elandycamino@reddit
Probably a survival instinct. We couldn't be abducted and seen on Unsolved Mysteries if we were rotten vile smelly trash
ConcreteKeys@reddit
I kinda wanted to be on Rescue 911 so that I could get a helicopter ride though.
JamesMattDillon@reddit
Never done that, as I thought it was stupid
lakatos_intolerant@reddit
I had forgotten about this awful trend.
_sacrosanct@reddit
I used to pull my tube socks on and then fold them back over my feet inside out so they became no show socks. We were poor so I had to make do.
JediRebel79@reddit
Yes!! I used to roll the top of my socks down under my heels so they wouldnt show. We probably invented ankle socks đ
HomeHeatingTips@reddit
I thought this was more late 80's early 90's. Deck shoes with no socks and Far West jackets and Esprit shirts
clandahlina_redux@reddit
I wore my Keds without socks and my grandmother was always bleaching and/or baking soda scrubbing them. đ
pop5656@reddit
Yea I used to fold my socks back down over my feet to achieve this circa 1997-1999 or so in CA
jojotherider@reddit
I had low socks, like lower than ankle, but higher than current no shows.
ConcreteKeys@reddit
No shows showing is a no-no.
Working5daysaWeek@reddit
I wear Kedz everyday without socks. I hate socks.
8last@reddit
I've done it. Throw some goldbond powder in there to limit odors.
Easy_Independent_313@reddit
I still hate socks to this very day. It makes me so sad when I have to break out the socks in the fall because my ankles are cold.
CarRamrod72@reddit
I made it well into adulthood not knowing what kind of socks to buy because i dont think i regularly wore socks for a decade or more at one point.
collegeoldie@reddit
What even made you start at that point?
Workamania@reddit
It's was a preppy trend with loafers and boat shoes. My feet would always end up turning brown from the color of the leather rubbing off. No show socks didn't exist yet. That would have helped.
muffmonster80@reddit
Yep with pants pegged.
senorsmartpantalones@reddit
Pegged you say
me00000w@reddit

ireallylikecycling@reddit
Well, how is his wife holding up?
senorsmartpantalones@reddit
To shreds you say
rhythim313@reddit
Lol, I still wear boat shoes with no socks. Yeah, I'm That Guy.
Wheres-shelby@reddit
My husband always wears his vans without socks in summer. Theyâre canvas so they breathe and donât stink. I often wear my shoes without socks cuz im lazy. But I was very happy when no-show socks came out so i didnât have to roll down my ankle socks.
Peanut083@reddit
I remember when anyone who wore normal socks at school would be socially ostracised. My mum wouldnât buy me ankle socks or no-show socks for ages, so I was stuck with having to fold my socks into my shoes for a while.
Thankfully, I have small, narrow feet, so I never had the issue with cutting off my circulation. Finding size 5 shoes wasnât fun, but I suppose it gave me an advantage with my folded over sock game! I have to say that I was relieved that pregnancy caused my feet to grow to a size 6. Still not the easiest shoe size to find, but itâs not the unicorn size that size 5 is.
Glittering-Show-5521@reddit
My brother always gave me sh*t for wearing tube socks, and he wore no-show ankle socks. I just couldn't deal with how they felt. I still wear tube socks even when I'm wearing shorts.
zurenarhhhhh@reddit
What is wrong with you no sock wearing freaks haha.
MrsEmilyN@reddit
I used to wear my gym shoes without socks in the summer. I had to throw them away because they smelled so bad.
Level_Improvement532@reddit
No socks and an avid sailor as a kid, so the shoes were always in some form of dampness. I have no idea how I didnât lose a foot to some exotic fungus.
Good timesâŠ
cranberries87@reddit
I was so happy when they invented the footies/low socks for shoes. Seems like I could go a few months without the shoes stinking, then after the shoe was broken in really well the stench started. And it seems like once they hit that point, there was little you could do to remove the smell. There was some shoe spray that worked really well that was sold for a few years, but they stopped selling it. I remember a pair of Mary Janes I really liked that I ditched once they started to stink.
I always wonder when I look at old photos (1930s-1950s) - most of the women were wearing shoes and didnât appear to have on socks. Sneakers werenât a thing back then. Did they just run around with stinky feet back then?
McCale@reddit
No socks with deck shoes, or duck boots.
siobhanenator@reddit
I was going to raves a lot which was its own stinky smell, but combined with attending these things in sneakers with no socks in Houston, my shoes were the absolute most vile things in existence.
Helo7606@reddit
I never got the no socks thing. It just feels SUPER uncomfortable.
PrepetualSmelly@reddit (OP)
From what I remember back when I did it, it starts uncomfortable, actually gets really uncomfortable after like a month, then after a few months your shoes just feel gross. It really was bliss for the brief period when my shoes broke in though
Helo7606@reddit
Nah, I really don't like not having socks on. Especially if it's hot. Just makes my feet feel sweating and sticky.
Scissorsguadalupe@reddit
I have to be really drunk to go out without socks
Cashmeade@reddit
I'd carefully cut socks down, hem the raw edge and sew in some elastic and, if they didn't stay up, do a zigzag edge with my glue gun to give them some more grip on my skin.
I made a couple of custom pairs for every pair of shoes I wanted to wear no socks with.
I was so impressed with myself at the time. Now I marvel at how much time I put in to something so dumb đ€ŠđŒââïž I wish I had 'make multiple pairs of custom socks' time on my hands now!
Jetski125@reddit
So essentially you invented no show socks. Nice work!
CombatDeffective@reddit
I hate no show socks. I just don't wear any socks if it ain't boots n crews.
pixeequeen84@reddit
My brother was wearing vans with no socks on a trip to Vegas in July when he was like 14? 15? Those shoes had to be placed outside the hotel room and he had to wash his feet before he was allowed on the furniture.
Accomplished_Exit_30@reddit
I remember guys not wearing socks with their Dexter shoes.
roonilwonwonweasly@reddit
I still wear no shows in the spring. For summer I have about 10 pairs of slip on sneakers and ballet flats that need no socks, but I wear ballet flat "socks".
The whole knee high socks and sandals thing needs to go wherever the hell it went last time.
CraftyNicky@reddit
I remember these plastic shoes called jellies, gave lots of blisters and smelled awful after a few wears.
tryingisbetter@reddit
No show socks were a huge thing in the 90s. Like, they were everywhere. I got a pack, and didn't like them. I'm more of a ankle sock man.
FormalDinner7@reddit
We called them not-socks.
HotgunColdheart@reddit
Wearing no shows right now. Sock and crocs baby, keep it clean and comfy. When the work gear comes off, I kick it into 110% dad mode.
SeaSkimmer2@reddit
My first girlfriendâs feet from wearing sockless shoes all the time were the combined second-worst smelling part of her body.
Deep-Interest9947@reddit
If you donât like how women naturally smell, date men or no one. This is such a tired narrative.
SeaSkimmer2@reddit
She turned out to be psychotic. It wasnât just that.
Deep-Interest9947@reddit
Okay. Just say that instead of talking about how her feet were the second worst smelling part of her body. How does that have anything to do with being psychotic?
SeaSkimmer2@reddit
I used to work in a 911 dispatch center which was manned overwhelmingly by women, who would describe for eachother in exceedingly intimate detail their latest catch of the week from the road patrol and/or the fire department under our jurisdiction while naming names behind their back. I have learned from the horseâs mouths that âsugar and spice and everything niceâ is a facade which most of the male sex will never come to understand or accept.
She had smelly feet (the OP discussion), among other features. Not all have smelly feet, and not all have smelly other features.
Festygrrl@reddit
I used to wear no socks with Mary Jane docs. My husband at the time (early 2000s) would make me wash my feet when I got home from work. It was rank.
slappy_mcslapenstein@reddit
I used to find my socks down in middle school. I can't go without socks. Period. I wear socks with Crocs. Sweaty feet directly in shoes are nasty and cause blisters.
Aware_Policy_9174@reddit
Yeah I folded my socks down for a little while when I wore skirts with sneakers. I did the no sock thing for a while but my shoes got real funky. I honestly hated the folded socks and even when no show socks became a thing they never stayed in place for me. I just stopped caring and wore ankle or crew socks.
spaketto@reddit
Ugh, you gave me flashbacks to the horrific smell of my brother's feat in the middle of a long sockless summer. Awful.
LeftHandStir@reddit
rolling down the crew sock to "no show" was the move for jr high basketball. I went the other way though, and rocked the Keith Van Horn knee-high socks.
SimpleVegetable5715@reddit
You didnât toss your shoes in the washing machine sometimes?
scott81425@reddit
I just bought women's ankle socks. They were no-shows on my big feet.
Moons_of_Moons@reddit
This must have been regional to your area. I don't remember this.
I remember people older than me in like 92-93 wearing penny loafers with no socks.
jtho78@reddit
Agreed, I remember the no socks with penny loafers after 1990. I've never heard of the trend again until recently. (Pacific Northwest)
RolandMT32@reddit
I never liked the look of no show socks. For a while I actually thought people weren't wearing socks at all.. Don know why you'd want to make it look like you aren't wearing socks.
ghoooooooooost@reddit
I wore Converse with no socks every day in 2001-2003.
darksideofmypoon@reddit
I still wear converse with no socks sometimes.
fridaygirl7@reddit
Theyâre so scratchy on the inside, Iâm surprised that doesnât bug you. I wear my running shoes without socks but canât do it with converse.
FoppyRETURNS@reddit
2000 was a weird time. Too modern for me. đ
Valuable-Math9969@reddit
I liked not wearing socks until I realized it made my shoes irreversible stinky. Now I can't go without socks.
HuckleberryHappy6524@reddit
Take the insole out and put a no show sock on it then stick it back in there.
Wendyland78@reddit
I add an insert that I can wash. I only wear socks if itâs really cold out
jwibspar@reddit
In the late 80s I decided to not wear socks one summer because I had just watched Voltron: Defenders of the Universe and, in unassailable kid logic, I realized Voltron did not wear socks. Sadly, this was also the summer I did little league T-ball. Much itchiness ensued.
Designer-Bid-3155@reddit
I haven't worn socks since middle school.
LocallySourcedWeirdo@reddit
Socks are a scam.
jojotherider@reddit
Careful. Big Socks might be watching
netburnr2@reddit

the_amazing_spork@reddit
When I was a freshman in college I remember sitting in a summer class thinking someone feet were really gross. I then realized it was my feet. Baby powder can help some. But no shows were a game changer.
TuckerCarlsonsOhface@reddit
Such a gross trend
LimeSalty4092@reddit
I havenât worn socks since 1993
Most womenâs fashion doesnât really work with socksÂ
blackhawksq@reddit
Don't remember this, but i absolutely despise no show socks. Don't know why but they always feel like they're about to fall off.
I also generally hate wearing things on my feet. So if I am at home I am walking barefoot or woth slides if my foot is hurting or something
Deep-Interest9947@reddit
I went from wearing my tube socks over half way up my calf to no show socks very quickly. But I wouldnât have been caught dead in ankle socks in the in between part.
TlMEGH0ST@reddit
I still wonât! Iâm horrified that Hooters style ankle socks are back in
throwitallaway@reddit
Yes I do remember that. I much prefer my long socks now. The higher the socks, the downer the foo!
unbalancedcentrifuge@reddit
This is why every new pair of shoes I own gets doused in zinc oxide before I start to wear them....I remember the smell of those nasty ballet flats...especially when wet. When a shoe starts to stink, there is no saving it. You gotta stop it from the beginning!.
TrashGirlTransGirl@reddit
On a related note does anyone here remember the Rotten Sneaker Contest? They used to have it every year at the fair we went to where whoever had the smelliest sneakers won $500
SunshineInDetroit@reddit
Unless I'm cycling or dressed up for something fancy I'm 100% in sandals
Comfortable-nerve78@reddit
Still rock the no show socks I donât care. I own two pairs of jeans and one dress slacks. So yeah I wear no show sock liners. I work outside my feet have the best farmers tan youâll see. I donât need socks for sandals with my tan. My feet are ghost white. I wear whatâs comfortable I donât keep up with trends never have.
CDA_CPA@reddit
I hate socks. I rarely wear them, even in winter. I live in sandals during spring/summer and Birkenstock or Oofos clogs in the fall/winter.
katie_cat_eyes@reddit
Yeah, no, we all kind of doubled down on socks. It was either really gaudy (Iâm looking at you, rainbow toe socks) or functional. Except for when the Dr Martens sandals came out. Then everyone has a pair.
Clear_Tangerine5110@reddit
PsshhhâŠ. I was wearing socks with sandals.
absentlyric@reddit
Interesting, it was the opposite in my area, everyone was wearing socks, including with their Birkenstocks.
toodledootootootoo@reddit
Yeah and then ankle socks became widely available and everyone decided regular socks were some kinda faux pas, and some people our age are still stuck in that and judge people for trying to look young cause they wear regular socks. Rant over!
Wendyland78@reddit
I hate the feeling of socks. I have some inserts that can be washed to keep my shoes from stinking.
KRoadkil@reddit
They were a thing, but our parents thought they were dumb because why pay for 1/4 of a full sock, and wouldnât buy it. Xennial ingenuity created the folded no-show sock, because those things werenât staying up anyway.
Okra-Tomatoes@reddit
There was also that trend of wearing ballet shoes without socks that stunk after only one hour.
collegeoldie@reddit
I have a core memory from middle school of taking my shoes off, and my friends having to leave my room until I put them on the porch and aired it out. I insisted that they weren't that bad. They were.
Emannuelle-in-space@reddit
Yeah I thought of this the other day when I took my dog out for a quick walk and didnât feel like putting on socks before shoes. Â I couldnât believe I did that on purpose for so long, and have completely forgotten why I did that. Â Knowing me, it was because it âlooked coolâ but I canât understand why I thought that. Â When my parents eventually forced me to wear socks, Iâd fold them down to where they werenât visible below my shoe. Â Kids are weird.
