Advise on returning to Ireland

Hoping to return to Ireland in the next couple of months with our two kids 9 and 3, but we are really undecided on where to set up.
We are both from a rural county in Ireland, own a home here mortgage free, so have this to return to. Work isn’t plentiful and likely one of us would have to work away from home Monday-Friday. We’ve lived here for a couple of years when our first child was born so have an idea of what we would be going back to, it’s not that we don’t like it, it’s nice being around family and home is home but we don’t feel as excited about it. Our son loves the idea of being back ‘home’ with his cousins and rest of his family so this weighs heavily on us. Our second child was born abroad and he is still young yet so doesn’t have the same connection.
The other option we are thinking about is Dublin, we could both get good work here, and having good earning ability, but would have to sign up for a mortgage and have no family help. We’d hope to keep our other home and have this to go to once a month or so. We’ve gone through pro’s and cons on both and can’t seem to decide!! We’ve liked our time abroad, but would like our kids to grow up in Ireland. I just can’t decide if taking on a mortgage when we don’t need to is a good idea or are we just being selfish!! Would love to hear others thoughts and advice!

Mortgage free surrounded by family in an area where it sounds like you both had happy childhoods seems pretty hard to beat.
Hopefully you will get some replies from Irish expats returning home but fwiw I moved my 8, 6, and 2yos from New York to a village outside Cork last year. We initially thought we would end up in one of the Dublin suburbs but landing somewhere borderline rural with a small national school made for a much gentler transition for them.

Just pick a town on the motorway toward your home country from Dublin. Move to Bray, Naas, Navan, Dundalk?, and somewhere you can shoot out home whenever you want and work hybrid in Dublin.
If you already own a house it’s hardly a big deal getting a mortgage on another. It’s a good financial decision to expand your net worth when you’re still young, not sure why you want to sit back already.
I’m thinking of moving home myself, I’m a different man now to the one who left and I can’t wait to experience Ireland again as the new me. Try your best to be positive, it will be great with the kids if you throw yourself into it

I feel like people on Ireland sub will be way more qualified to advise what is better, living in rural Ireland close to family or moving to Dublin
