SpeedBlitzX@reddit
So what makes this chicken orange?
one_love_silvia@reddit (OP)
The orange in it
SpeedBlitzX@reddit
Usually orange chicken tends to also look orange but i guess ill take your word for it.
camcam210@reddit
I bet you’re reaaaaal fun at parties…
SpeedBlitzX@reddit
What year is it?
CommieDog2525@reddit
2005
SpeedBlitzX@reddit
Can't believe that was 21 years ago.
CommieDog2525@reddit
I weep everyday
TrainingSword@reddit
We could tell even without your unsolicited admittance that you didn’t use a recipe
KirkSheffler@reddit
Looks brown
thenumbers42@reddit
I believe you
ImCharlemagne@reddit
That ain't orange brother.
Sea_Structure_8692@reddit
It shows
Friendly_Rush_7034@reddit
So you didn't make orange chicken
one_love_silvia@reddit (OP)
I guess not. But it was chicken with orange flavors, so close enough?
Griffithead@reddit
Is it just soy sauce and some orange juice?
one_love_silvia@reddit (OP)
Soy sauce, fuckton of sugar, fresh squeezed orange juice, 2 oranges worth of test, half an orange of slices, half a bulb of garlic, and some fresh ginger. And then diluted with some water.
Griffithead@reddit
Hell yeah, that sounds great.
one_love_silvia@reddit (OP)
Might not be proper orange chicken, but it was chicken with a lot of orange taste and still quite tasty, so I'll call it a success 😂
TW_Yellow78@reddit
He said no recipe.
LukaIncic@reddit
i can clearly see you didn’t follow a recipe 😬
Separate-Fly5165@reddit
How did it taste?
wuzzkopf@reddit
Well you should‘ve followed a recipe
one_love_silvia@reddit (OP)
Probably too much soy sauce... maybe a whole bottle was too much on hindsight.
BozBozBoz09@reddit
And this soy sauce is for you, I can put it in your shoe
The-Final-Reason@reddit
A whole bottle? Hope you keep your sight.
AffectEconomy6034@reddit
maybe let me check
one_love_silvia@reddit (OP)
Well fortunately it seems ill get about 10 servings worth, so perfect!
JwPATX@reddit
Looks like the oil was just a little too hot.
sir_moleo@reddit
A whole bottle for how much? Enough to feed like 100 people? If not, then yeah way too much.
Lifemarr@reddit
wrong
Richie_Zeppelin@reddit
Haha thought that was a toe. Good on you to cook!
BunnyLady91@reddit
You know chicken is going to be flavorful when it looks like beef! Looks really good!
one_love_silvia@reddit (OP)
😂😂😂 appreciate the positive reinforcement
Lifemarr@reddit
Somehow it looks neither orange or chicken. Excellent, probably tastes great.
one_love_silvia@reddit (OP)
It was quite tasty indeed! Orange chicken sauce is mostly soy sauce, so I assume Panda Express adds a fuckton of food coloring or something to theirs.
CrimsonOOmpa@reddit
It's definitely not mostly soy sauce. It's mostly orange juice/zest. It uses a little bit of soy sauce. I think I understand your problem now lol.
t001_t1m3@reddit
The only orange in Panda Express orange chicken is orange extract powder.
CrimsonOOmpa@reddit
I didn't say anything about PE. I was talking about the actual recipe.
Ted_The_Generic_Guy@reddit
PE *is* the actual recipe. they literally invented it from scratch lol
CrimsonOOmpa@reddit
When you make orange chicken at home you're going to be using a lot of orange juice and zest. The original recipe used it as well, but now it's probably crap because all fast food is crap.
Ted_The_Generic_Guy@reddit
do you have evidence the original recipe used it?
CrimsonOOmpa@reddit
The evidence is called "looking it up."
t001_t1m3@reddit
I looked it up and the trick is orange extract, no zest or juice
CrimsonOOmpa@reddit
Cool. Now look up homemade versions like I was originally talking about.
t001_t1m3@reddit
Yeah I sent a video saying those ones are dogshit and wrong
t001_t1m3@reddit
https://youtu.be/2bkjhI0uN3A?si=h0WIdU8LVkSVcPEB
Most trustworthy video on the topic says orange extract and that orange chicken isn't Chinese
Mfw redditors talk out of their ass confidently
t001_t1m3@reddit
The OG is Panda Express. It didn't exist before then. There is nothing in China remotely similar. You're probably conflating PE Orange Chicken with Chinese Takeout orange chicken that is a knockoff of the OG.
CrimsonOOmpa@reddit
Ok
one_love_silvia@reddit (OP)
Seems right 😂
yseult-@reddit
it’s not mostly soy sauce. did you use orange juice or orange peel at all? sugar?
one_love_silvia@reddit (OP)
No orange juice aside from what i squeezed from an orange. Two oranges worth of test, plus maybe half an orange worth of orange peel. Reddit said if i put too much orange juice in, itll be too thin lol. I generally just look up base ingredients when i cook things and then wing it.
Accurate? Probably not.
Tasty? Usually. Lol
yseult-@reddit
you would make a cornstarch slurry with something like this to get it to thicken up and stick to the chicken. that’s kind of the standard technique for any of these tossed American Chinese dishes
one_love_silvia@reddit (OP)
I dont own corn starch T-T
keoghberry@reddit
It's a staple if you wanna make Asian adjacent sauces like orange chicken!
This is my go to Orange chicken recipe if you want to try: https://dinnerthendessert.com/panda-express-orange-chicken-copycat/
one_love_silvia@reddit (OP)
Saved, thanks!
secretgaythoughts@reddit
Yum. I’d eat yours. Looks spicy and crispy
one_love_silvia@reddit (OP)
Definitely crispy! Sadly no spice, there's a canyon between what my mouth and my stomach can handle spice-wise and i didnt wanna risk it haha
JemmaMimic@reddit
Tasty is everything, you can always close your eyes so you can't see it. Good job anyway!
one_love_silvia@reddit (OP)
Thanks haha
txsnowman17@reddit
Tang is the secret for color and flavor.
sir_moleo@reddit
No idea where you would get this idea. It has at most a few tablespoons of soy sauce per batch. It's almost entirely sugar.
one_love_silvia@reddit (OP)
I figured if you're not supposed to use a ton of orange juice, thats the only other liquid used in it lol... fortunately it tastes good. I'll have to give it another go. Maybe I'll just get some orange juice and dilute what i have lmao
sir_moleo@reddit
Orange oil (or juice/zest), sugar, corn starch, a few dashes of soy sauce/rice vinegar/sesame oil.
one_love_silvia@reddit (OP)
Ill have to give it another shot!
sir_moleo@reddit
I believe in you. Also, might wanna get your blood pressure checked after eating this. 😅
one_love_silvia@reddit (OP)
Lmao
poontangpooter@reddit
Oranges....are added to orange chicken....
one_love_silvia@reddit (OP)
Yea it has orange in it
BlackMagick23@reddit
Bro thought orange chicken was called that only because of the color and not the fruit 🥀
Lifemarr@reddit
As a white trash american, i need my orange chicken to look like oranges and chickens were genetically crossed into one another in order to want to eat it.
Fomulouscrunch@reddit
I'm only trash on the weekends and alternate Wednesday evenings, but yeah. You seem like someone who might be here, psychically speaking: ever had really crappy strawberry beef?
one_love_silvia@reddit (OP)
😂😂😂
ChefAsstastic@reddit
DrZoidberg117@reddit
I made orange chicken as well and when I poured the slurry mixture into the wok, it made the sauce all gelatinous and clumpy and I had to wash off the chicken and restart. Learned I had to pour it in gradually at a lower temperature and with a ratio of 2 tbsp of water to 2-3tsp corn starch.
So keep that in mind in case that happens to u lol
Mr-Bry-Guy@reddit
How was it though?
one_love_silvia@reddit (OP)
Yummy!
Mr-Bry-Guy@reddit
Hell yea! 👌🏾 10/10!
h0rchatapapi@reddit
Oh neat! Mongolian beef
one_love_silvia@reddit (OP)
Its probably pretty close to that, just with orange added lmao
h0rchatapapi@reddit
Was it good?
one_love_silvia@reddit (OP)
Yup!
wehttamman@reddit
I can tell
Shade-RF-@reddit
Huh. Kinda looks like beef and broccoli or pepper steak.
altofanaltthatisalt@reddit
Is the orange already digested? ‘Cause all I see is the brown.
yseult-@reddit
how much chicken did you prepare??? this would be incredibly salty unless a huge portion was made & I can’t tell if you’re joking lol
one_love_silvia@reddit (OP)
4 pieces of large chicken strips. And yea, i have a good amount left over. So far including the night me and my buddy ate it, Ive gotten 6 or 7 plates outta the sauce and still have enough for probably another 4-5. I add the sauce on after so it can be properly proportioned lol.
yseult-@reddit
what is a strip? like breast? or frozen fried strips? lol
one_love_silvia@reddit (OP)
Frozen fried strip lol. Probably about 2 chicken breasts worth
crwcomposer@reddit
A whole bottle of soy sauce on 4 chicken strips!?
That can't taste like anything but salt
ayyyyycrisp@reddit
in what world is a chicken strip anything the size of 2 chicken breasts?? unless you have a really really long chicken nugget made from slurry?
Fomulouscrunch@reddit
Drove right past the freeway exit for Orange Chicken St. and took the next one for Is It Beef Ave. That said, it looks delicious.
one_love_silvia@reddit (OP)
Visually, it does remind me of beijing beef from Panda lol.
