3 day trip across West Virginia

378miles across the Mon National Forest. Had to drive a friend back to town to get new brakes after burning them up going down hill, since my other friend said gas was expensive 😂
Amazingly got 2.1mi/kwh along the route going downhill

When’s the next trip? I gotta get in on this!

Peak travel squad energy, these pics are amazing

I like EVs, but they're pretty impractical for where I live (Alaska) because charging infrastructure is essentially non-existent outside the main roads.
I'm curious to see how they age - we've got 30+ year old Jeeps and 4Runners all over the place, will we see the same in 30 years with electrics?
ElegantBiscuit@reddit
From the data we have so far, EV batteries only seem to lose about 1% per year, with a 15 year Model S typically around 85%. We don't have the data on how that does over even more time, but that is also battery tech from 15 years ago. Even so, batteries can theoretically be replaced just like an engine, and the savings in maintenance, fluid changes, and cheaper energy over the life of the vehicle makes even a $10k swap job worth it if you really want to keep the vehicle.
Range is the biggest concern, but even fully loaded with poor aero, big tires, and an old battery, you can probably wring 240 miles of on-road range in a bad scenario. I bet a fair number of tacomas and jeeps probably don't even get that, and the only limit is a charger which requires some planning, but its not that different from gas. Just a little more restrictive, but less so every year.
Worst case scenario, even the tiny little portable generators are capable of 2000 watts, and so theoretically you can probably get around 5-6 miles added per hour. Really inefficient use of gas, but it can extend your range a fair amount if you really need it.

As someone with a 15 year old gen 1 ev I use for around town trips, I would yes 100%.

Ain’t no way that’s sick you have a ev1
NoteFuture7522@reddit
No I have Nissan leaf
SnooPredictions1098@reddit (OP)
Ah very nice

Sick truck and awesome trip.
What bumper is that?
SnooPredictions1098@reddit (OP)
Appreciate it! 🤝
Swapped it from a 2024 ford tremor. It’s the modular bumper they offer on the tremor/raptor/raptor r. Bolted right up

Sweet! Great solution. Thank you for sharing.

How annoyed were your buddies when you had to leave them & the trail to charge your truck for an hour every day..?
SnooPredictions1098@reddit (OP)
Now why would I do that? Only needed an hour of charge during the whole trip and met up with them an hour later. They were REALLLY annoyed using my truck to power the smoker for burgers, use the electric blackstone, use starlink, and warm up water for showers /s
PonyThug@reddit
The other guy is just being a dick about your EV truck. Don’t listen try to justify it.
Also I can run all that stuff of my 2015 f150 with the aux battery I added. Don’t need a lighting, power boost, or even an off the shelf battery pack for it
SnooPredictions1098@reddit (OP)
Fair fair.
They all had battery boxes too..except their inverters were not big enough. Lightning has 9.6kW available with 10outlets + a 240v so enough power to go around
SnooPredictions1098@reddit (OP)
Black stone pulls 1800 watts and smoker was 1200
seanocono22@reddit
Yeah, you can’t run all that off an aux battery. Those require a more powerful inverter.
The crazy thing is the Lightning can run all of those at once.
PonyThug@reddit
Raptor take offs look so good on the lighting!!
SnooPredictions1098@reddit (OP)
Appreciate it! I believe they are 2018 lariat max tow package wheels
walleburger@reddit
Love what you've done with the truck so far! I have a stock Lightning that I've done some light overlanding with but definitely want to do more of. Such a great overlanding vehicle.
Are you plugging in the lights to the 12V battery?
SnooPredictions1098@reddit (OP)
Yup. They have a relay. I have this kit https://www.diodedynamics.com/ss3-sae-yellow-pro-led-pod-pair.html
Embarrassed-Owl-5824@reddit
How does the Lightning do offroad?
SnooPredictions1098@reddit (OP)
I honestly love it. The break over angle isn’t great. If you belly out you’re gonna need a yank most times but the 35 and 3in lift solve most of the stock issues. Been out to Moab, upper peninsula, Maine and everywhere in between
Embarrassed-Owl-5824@reddit
Do you have a 3“ lift front and back? How‘s your mi/kWh?
SnooPredictions1098@reddit (OP)
I have the eibach lift kit. 3in in front 1 in rear I think?
Went from 2.3-2.4 to about 1.7-1.8mi/kwh mixed driving but that was expected. Range around 220-280 depending on driving style
