What random interactions have you had with celebrities on social media?
Posted by Impossible-Run2401@reddit | AskABrit | View on Reddit | 103 comments
I was thinking about this earlier today, then I saw the subreddit about meeting celebrities… how very coincidental!
Anyway, I’m interested to find out what interactions anyone has had with celebrities now they’re more ‘accessible’ to converse with on social media rather than actually meeting with them face-to-face?
I had a conversation late one night on Twitter (before weird space Karen and his kitchen sink took it over) about the legalisation of marijuana between Danny John-Jules and Peter Hitchens, and the best argument PH could come up with for not legalising it was that “it was illegal for a reason” or something non-answery like that. I thought it was very odd for someone clearly so literate to just be dismissive of one side of the whole debate.
Also, speaking of weird space Karen, my wife’s sisters boyfriend had an interaction with him which essentially ended up with him owing a signed dollar because he’d accused that cave rescue guy of being a paedophile a few years back. Said signed dollar still hasn’t materialised.

I have had Beth McCarthy view my Instagram story & Catty like it. Made me feel famous for a hot minute
lawrekat63@reddit
Justin Rose, the golfer, followed me on Instagram for two days. Not sure who he thought I was

The Wurzels liked my tweet. I think that was the moment I peaked. It’s all downhill from here.
Longjumping_Tour_613@reddit
I've worked many gigs over the years, and I will always remember the Wurzels for this; one of the guys wives makes them all their own individual sandwiches, neatly wrapped and labelled. No rock n roll pomposity, just good wholesome home made butties. Gives me the warm feels...

You are literally never going to get better than that.

I got blocked by Matt Lucas on twitter for saying I didn't like his character in Doctor Who.
Didn't even tag him in it, he just saw it, replied 'Cheers mate' and blocked me
Questingcloset@reddit
I also got a snide comment/blocked by him when I criticised that awful airport sketch show they did for using black face (this was when it first aired)
AndrewHinds67@reddit
Come Fly With Me was hilarious! I bought it on blue ray. I actually sat in a bar at Dallas Fort Worth airport watching it on my tablet.
queztioz@reddit
You have a tablet that can play Blu-ray?
Longjumping_Tour_613@reddit
No, no, no, you misunderstand. It was blue ray.
Jlaw118@reddit
Nah Come Fly With me was fantastic, it was miles ahead of Little Britain

Before he went insane, I reached out to Graham Linehan because my friend was convinced the line from the Father Ted episode "Flight into Terror" where the blind priest is listening to comedy on his headphones, and reveals it to be Mr Bean.
My friend was convinced this wasn't actually a joke and the audience laugher came from Ted's reaction. I couldn't convince my friend that it's physically impossible to enjoy Mr Bean through audio only. Frustrated, I tweeted Graham to confirm if this was actually the intended joke. I don't remember the exact reply but he did politely confirm I was right, and my friend issued a grovelling response for ever doubting his judgement.
BenHippynet@reddit
No interaction with them, but for some reason Nile Rogers (follows 7484 people) and Keith Chegwin (follows 4011 people) both follow me.
AndrewHinds67@reddit
Should be Keith Chewin followed since he died a few years ago.
queztioz@reddit
Is it though? The account's follows don't change when the user passes away.

Victoria Coren-Mitchell actually replied to a tweet I'd sent in response to her post! It was to do with S1 of Bridgerton and my unsuspecting 80+ Mum sitting through the stairwell oral scene, with my sister also in the lounge too ha ha.

Years ago, I asked Bob Mortimer what he was having for tea that night. He responded saying he was having a Fray Bentos steak and kidney pudding with gravy and chips, and that he might pop out later for a Fry's chocolate cream.
Background-Shape-429@reddit
That sounds true. A wholesome and random reply.

Darren Litten who wrote Benidorm and Scarborough (brilliant and sadly cancelled) is quite active and interacts positively. Asa something who played a club singer in the show too. I suspect the vast majority of people most people regard as real stars don’t even look at their public accounts and have managers.

About 15 years ago I made a joke comment on a post by Sara Cox off of the radio. She laughed and replied, and my day was made.
I got a retweet from Russel Hound once too, but that was less impressive.

My brother tweeted charlie sheen like 10 years ago about a game called ‘pocket god’ on ipod/iphone that had a reference to him.
It was a character called charlie who would say ‘winning’ and stuff sometimes and charlie retweeted it and replied saying something along the lines of thats cool lol

Not me but my daughter. Liam Gallagher tweeted some mildly amusing pun and my daughter replied saying "you proud of that?" and he answered saying "I'm well chuffed" or something similar.
My best offer is I tweeted Barry Chuckle saying I was trying to convince my friend to call her horse Barry and he replied to say that was a splendid idea

I once tweeted about a Magnus Mills book and he liked my tweet two years later. That's about as good as it gets for me!

Many years ago Paul Burrell (princess Diana's butler) liked and commented on a photo of mine. Which my partner ribbed me about for ages. It was from Stourbridge (national trust). To be fair it was a great photo from an obscure angle, I really appreciated it.

Not a british celebrity but the only celeb who has ever replied to me was designer Vera Wang. I once posted her make up one my instagram and she replied an hour later, talking about how much she liked this design of hers. As a massive SATC fan it was amazing to hear from her.
markusparkus75@reddit
Mark Hamill has retweeted me twice. Both times it was about Rik Mayall, who he was big pals with apparently.
PM_ME_U_SMILING@reddit
Use twitter a lot. When I first made it I tweeted some musicians I liked to tell em I liked em. David Draiman was the only person to respond, and that was to criticise my wording (I think I called him a celebrity rather than an artist). Mara Wilson is an angel, though. Funny and shares/d lots of aspiring writers' jokes/pieces.
WeirdLight9452@reddit
Derek Landy replies to a lot of fans, a while ago I had a conversation with him about his blind character being a complete piece of shit. John Thompson came in to the restaurant I used manage once for breakfast. It was very early and he was the only one there, the only other staff were all pretty young and had no concept of The Fast Show/Cold Feet, or anything else he was well known for. I served him myself and he was very pleasant. I posted on Twitter later that day when I got home saying how I should have put some smooth jazz on the sound system for him while he was in there, and he replied to my tweet just saying “Nice.” Seems like nothing obviously, but it was a Fast Show reference and he was continuing the bit, so I really appreciated it.

Back before it was a hideous hellscape, I replied 'stupid welcoming mints!' to Mae Whitman the actress, after she tweeted a generic 'just checked into my hotel and they left these candies on my pillow' type of thing, and she responded with a photo of said mints on said pillow. I thought that was nice of her, indulging my Simpsons quoting.

Steve Carrell was using Twitter to promote his new show, Angie Tribeca. I had something come across my feed and replied to it, and found myself in a conversation with Steve, Carl Reiner, and a few others. It made my day when I made a joke and Carl Reiner said it was a funny comment.
fightclub246011@reddit
Bill Oakley (The Simpsons) opened up his DMs on twitter once and I messaged him to ask how he felt about all the Steamed Hams memes and videos that were everywhere at the time. He replied saying it was fun and he was happy to be part of cultural history. I think I even sent him a link to a Steamed Hams edit I’d made and he watched it, said it was funny.

Wesley Snipes posted that Chewbacca L'Oréal picture, and Peter Mayhew replied to it (which is how I saw it, because I followed Peter). I replied to that with something like "I've had that as my profile pic since I joined twitter!", and Wesley Snipes liked my tweet.

A pretty big DJ, well he was big in the UK anyway, from the late noughties followed my twitter when I was like 13 years old. I’d never tweeted anything about him so it wasn’t as if he did it because I was a fan. He used to like my posts but never contacted. Not exactly exciting but it’s all I have.

I've had DMs with director John M Chu (Wicked, Crazy Rich Asians) before he got big, praising one of his less well received projects back in the day and Icelandic singer Svala where people were bashing her new single and I defended her and out of no where she personally messaged me thanking me for the support and that it meant a lot.
That's about it.
Jlaw118@reddit
When Twitter was first becoming popular, I used to tweet celebrities random things and see if they’d reply.
I remember asking Leigh Francis if Celebrity Juice was live, he replied “I wish.”
Once asked Louis Walsh how he was, “great, you?” Was his response.
I told Dom Joly I loved his comedy and Trigger Happy TV and he thanked me
Also had a few tweets back and forth with Simon Brodkin when he used to play Lee Nelson asking him when he was going to next be in my local town.
These are all about 15-20ish years ago tbh, probably wouldn’t really stand a chance of getting a celebrity to reply nowadays 😂

Not me personally (thankfully) but a friend of a friend (male) messaged Jessie Wallace / Kat from Eastenders telling her that his friends thought they looked alike…
Long story short they became friends and use to go out and get on it together. I think he was there when she was caught shouting homophobic slurs outside G A Y in soho (he’s gay so obvs wasn’t joining in).
I think they were pals for a few years before her behaviour got too much even for him, and he was a complete smash head

I commented that Mehcad Brooks as Jax with a mustache reminded me of Carl Weathers. (The Dillon you sonovabitch guy from Predator who shook hands with Arnold for anyone who doesnt know who he is)
He didnt realise I was tryna compliment his looks

I got into it a little bit with Wolfie Van Halen once.
He's pretty active on social media and kept posting videos of himself working on his first album...for years!
And I said something, like "if you would spend less time on Twitter and more time working on your record..."
He didn't like that.
Album was meh, FWIW.
Huge fan of Van Halen; he's spectacularly talented and was great as their bass player, but I'm not a fan of his Mammoth stuff.
Wolfie, if you're lurking on Reddit, I know, I know.

Boy George reposted a reel of mine from a fan page I used to run. It was the singer of the band being really sexy on stage. Various celebs also liked my posts and reels.
I exchanged some Instagram messages with Isaac from Hanson during Covid about masks. He was against wearing them to church and I vehemently disagreed with him. We were both polite, but I dont believe he changed his mind.
I've also had brief Instagram exchanges with some singers I like (not like A list level or anywhere near!) - usually them liking my messages or answering a question I'd sent.

I had a three-way exchange of billets-doux with Jacqui Oatley and Julie Fleeting over Rangers Women's teen midfield sensation - the 16 yo May Cruft. This was after la Cruft came on against Celtic in a league match, and Fleeting complained her own 16 yo "Could barely empty a dishwasher".
"Aye, but you don't get nicknamed "Johan Cruft" for doing the dishes", quoth I.
Even Ian 'Chubby' Crocker chipped in!

I had a like from Victoria Coren-Mitchell.
Several years ago I reported on Wycombe Wanderers for the local newspaper. One year they released a goalkeeper kit that had an unusual pattern on it - apparently the science was it would make the keeper look bigger and distract the opposing striker.
Not long after she was presenting an episode of Only Connect where she was wearing a dress that looked not dissimilar to the Wycombe keeper kit. I took a screenshot and posted a tweet of her alongside the Wycombe keeper and asked people “who wore it better? RT for keeper, like for VCM”, tagging both of them.
VCM, either through sheer arrogance or because she found the tweet funny, liked the tweet. I should add that Scott Brown, the Wycombe keeper wearing the kit in the photo, also liked it.

On Twitter, William Shatner regularly posted a variety of ‘world days’, such as World Poetry Day, or World Wildlife Day. However, some of them were a bit random and, when he posted that it was World Meringue Day, I asked “Where do you get these”, he replied, “A little bakery on the corner of my street”.

I tweeted something about Bill Lawrence back when he was just Spin City/Scrubs guy. I cant remember what it was but some light criticism about Scrubs that he responded to.
Nothing weird about that. Except I didn't @ him, so he'd searched his name on twitter to see what people were saying about him. And despite all his success since I still judge him a little for that.
jimmyb27@reddit
Funny you should mention Danny John Jules. Back when Google+ was a thing, I followed Robert Llewellyn, and he posted a chapter, or a shorter extract, I forget, from the first book in his utopian series, News From Gardenia. I spotted a grammatical error, and got a thank you from the man himself when I pointed it out.

Very tenuous link as I had no actual interaction, but growing up in a cycling family, I had gone to a number of velodrome events prior to the 2012 Olympics when cycling suddenly took off here, and on one occasion I filmed the Omnium Elimination race at one event. A year of something later, when everyone in the UK was suddenly fascinated by track cycling that video blew up because it was literally the only depiction of the Omnium Elimination race on the entire internet at that point (it's an incredibly niche thing).
I spent a while using youtube's analytics to see where the traffic was coming from and found that several professional riders had embedded my video in their websites.
