I just mentioned the VW beetle scene to some friends recently. I snuck out of bed and watched this scene while hiding behind my parents in the living room. They had no idea I was there, and I had nightmares for a while. Still think of it often.
mediawoman@reddit
This was real!

The Swarm came out in theaters in 1978 and had a stacked cast. It took place mostly in Houston.
The Savage Bees was the made for TV one with the red VW Beetle in the New Orleans Superdome.
Both of them scared me, I’m still not a fan of bees / wasps/ hornets.
Specialist-Rock-5034@reddit
Stacked cast, indeed.
2PlasticLobsters@reddit
Yeah, the Superdome was the first enclosed stadium & very topical. The storylime had to be very convoluted to work it in.
pagette44@reddit
The Astrodome in Houston was the first. It opened in 1965
kahllerdady@reddit
Oh man The Savage Bees horrified me ad a kid
sipperphoto@reddit
Was the Savage Bees where they turned on the AC in the stadium and froze the bees out?
I vaguely remember it!

The Swarm (1978) is a delightfully craptastic cheesy B-movie that is charming in its own way, despite having an incredibly idiotic plot. It's one of those movies I put on every few months and to some degree actually enjoy.

So many mind-bogglingly bad, cheesy as heck disaster movies in the 70s! In the 90s when i worked at a video rental place we'd pick one of those terrible movies and then afterwards discuss what the stupidest thing about them was. I remember Towering Inferno (1974) the consensus was "Charlton Heston can't get into the stairwell because somebody somehow left a wheelbarrow full of wet concrete sitting on the inside landing and it tipped over, blocking the door from opening with a pile of concrete".
pmoity@reddit
Towering inferno another great movie....
whirlydad@reddit
The Swarm (1978) maybe? I loved that movie.
Tuffmuff34@reddit
I totally remember seeing this movie. As for the name of it...
HarveyMushman72@reddit
I remember that scene.
Oldebookworm@reddit
Yes. It gave me nightmares. Apparently you can’t avoid bees by hiding under the bed
mobfather@reddit
Like many Gen-X, I had a futon.
Workamania@reddit
It's not Invasion of the Bee Girls.
conejon@reddit
The bus scene was from Terror Out of the Sky, the sequel to The Savage Bees, where they lured the bees into the Superdome to freeze them.

Thank you i'll look it up!

BuggeroffIm50@reddit
If it trapping the bees in a stadium is in the plot line, this is it
SparksWood71@reddit
Oh yes I remember this . . . . It was the ants one that really creeped me out as a kid though.
Poultrygeist74@reddit
Empire of the Ants
bird9066@reddit
"THEM!!!" Oh wait, that was one of the giant insects movies from the fifties they were still playing on TV.
CynfullyDelicious@reddit
Panic at Lakewood Manor - creeped me TF out. I do remember Suzanne Somers being in it and at one point having ants crawl all over her face 😬 😂
champs-de-fraises@reddit
Phase IV, I think
TeaMugPatina@reddit
That movie was too deep for me the first time I saw it.
captainfishhooks@reddit

fungusamongus8@reddit

moneyman74@reddit
I think there is more than one Killer Bees movie...it was shown in the afternoon in my area yearly in the 80s
autochthonous@reddit
The ere like five or six. Way more than there should’ve been.
V1per73@reddit
It was an abc movie of the week, made for TV... Usually they aired on Saturday afternoons.
AZPeakBagger@reddit
Don’t remember the movie but I lived it. We have Killer Bees here in Arizona and I survived an attack about a dozen years ago. Little SOB’s chased me for over a half mile and I’m not a slow runner. Ended up with about 30 stings all over by head and neck.
RunAwayBeerTruk@reddit
The kids shooting the nest with the shotgun, oh yes I remember still laugh about that scene once in awhile still
No_Subject_343@reddit
I remember it on TV. Still scared….
Starbbhp@reddit
I vaguely remember the end of a movie on tv with people trapped in a bee pop/ slug bug/ VW beetle on a football field.
worstpartyever@reddit
In the Astrodome! And they turned the air conditioning down to make the bees sleep.
Hilarious because it was always hot in the Dome
chimpyjnuts@reddit
I remember 2 things from that movie: The effected hallucinating giant bees, and the a/c in the astrodome at the end.
East_Escape254@reddit
There only 2 movies I can think of from that time: The Swarm and Terror out of the Sky(?).
Both were bee movies.
anotherspaceguy100@reddit
Sound like B movies to me.
TakeTheThirdStep@reddit
I think they got a lot of buzz back then, even for B movies.
anotherspaceguy100@reddit
So you're saying they were waxing in popularity?

DancesWithPigs@reddit
Oh yeah I remember that. Good pull.
tvieno@reddit
Terror Out of the Sky made for TV movie.
MadameBlue42@reddit
The Swarm. Actually gave me a nightmare, and when I woke up I could see a cloud out my bedroom window that looked like a swarm coming.
OldBanjoFrog@reddit
Savage Bees? Takes place in New Orleans?
